This has been my assumption as well.

  • People will begin paying attention again after Labor Day (as is traditional) and you will see polling switch to likely voter screens
  • Harris should sustain her 2 week rollout bump, VP bump and convention bump + debate bump (if it happens) / some likelihood of a solo townhall if the debate doesn't happen - think we could settle into a Harris +4-5 by end of September with good sized leads in PA/MI/WI/NV and tossups in GA/AZ/NC
  • Trump will further continue to freak out and flail as the polls continue to move away from him.  He went from cocky favorite to currently pure tossup territory and soon will be the underdog.
  • Harris has the edge with double haters and, while she is the current VP, I think she will coalesce undecided voters/late deciders as the "change" candidate (i.e., younger) - especially as she is neither the incumbent POTUS nor a former POTUS.  Trump can't really run on being the change candidate/fresh new ideas when he has a 4 year record already
  • As the poll of Latino voters shows, she has a lot more upside - her favorability with women, black voters, Latino voters and younger voters give her the edge

Still feels to me that Harris' likely EV win is between 276 (PA/MI/WI/NV) and 319 (+AZ/NC/GA).  Even if its 276, I would think her wins in the blue wall + NV will be strong enough to be seen as "untainted" by everyone but MAGA and her losses in AZ/NC/GA would be miniscule.

I'll take 319, thank you.

Well yeah, same. But I think it’s just the Biden map with another close L in NC. They’ve voted for a Dem governor twice while electing Trump. Unless Robinson just craters turnout in the state bc of how much he sucks, I think NC is close but no cigar again

NV/WI/MI/PA/AZ all have senate races that I think mutually help Harris and the senate candidates. NC/GA don’t.

This is some Qanon shit, and I do mean it's literally Qanon - they've talked a lot about body doubles and swapping out politicians and who is really in the WH.

When did they give up on the certainty that Trump was actually running the country and only weeks away from returning to the White House?

Of all the predictions about the impact of the internet years ago, I don't recall anyone warning about massive cults. It was the information superhighway and we were all going to be learning great things via this newly available medium. I guess we can just add a "dis" in front of that name and it's perfect.

I'm very gruntled by the facts that Trump is terrified of appearing in public now and that the GOP's entire GOTV operation is to give Charlie Kirk $150 mil and let him figure it out. Maybe it doesn't happen, but it's definitely easy right now to see how his own base's excitement begins to wane this fall as Harris continues to pick up momentum and his actual election day turnout just completely collapses.

Enthusiasm for trump is not great right now. As stated here, lots of people who had signs and flags up even earlier this summer have them down. That's not to say they won't vote or favor him anymore, but the enthusiasm in deep red Texas is waning.

Man near where I live there's a shitty MAGA business that lines the I-10 feeder road with signs, and they all have "Biden THIS!" "Biden THAT!" and it warms my heart lol. I don't think they're really able to de-select the target that they've already locked on and so they're starting from scratch with Kamala and defaulting to racist attacks.

I certainly know of a bunch of idiot boomers that are still "trump is who Jesus would vote for!!!" because I have an unfortunate amount of family that's still deep in the SBC, but they've been having a hard time with answering why they think a criminally fraudulent rapist is the """christian vote"""

This will become the norm. There's another decent surge coming from DNC official nomination and the Obama's getting out there.

Getting back to even was huge, now it's time to keep going and push trump down to low 40s high 30s.

Every poll showing him losing is going to damage his fragile psyche. He’s going to flail and lash out as it slips away from him

Some of those demographics have more leverage than others, though.  Take Latinos -- there are 59M Latinos in the US.  Where are they?  What impact might they have on the electoral college?  Increased turnout sure isn't going to matter in California or New York.  Texas and Florida?  Doubtful.  Those 4 states alone render 61% of the Latino voting block fairly unable to move the needle.  Add in Illinois, New Jersey, Colorado, New Mexico . . . I don't see much upside in that group.

Obviously, women and young voters are spread more evenly across the country.  Anyway, just a theory, I'm no pol.

This is probably true.  But the worst form of the cancer that will linger is the P2025, christofascist authoritarianism.  But they won't be able to hide the latter behind the dumbass appeal of Trump and MAGA.  They'll actually have to try to sell it on its merits.

Both ends of it are going to be ineffectual, as far as winning the national election.

We're gonna have our hands full for a while in Texas, though.

Defeating Trump is a good step, but we still have the malignancy of a large part of the electorate. Most of the people who became Trumpists were already GOP. Trump just showed up and said the quiet part out loud and seized the reins of the hate engine. That engine won't sink into the sea with Trump.

President Vance. President Vance at NATO. President Vance speaking to the nation from the Oval Office at a time of crisis or tragedy. It's a worse vision than President Palin...well, probably.

I don't presume to explain things to you as you're clearly expert. Vance and Palin demonstrate what I believe to be the only possible impact of a VP choice is making a dreadful decision. People should be able to imagine the choice as a sufficient president and then forget about him/her. No real impact.

If you have a clown waving pom-poms and shitting his pants, that's a concern and the VP choice will not fade to its usual obscurity. That's my observation over the years, anyway.

IMO this will cause a flip because reasons you cited. They'll see they can win with more democrat type backing and middle ground voters over the ever drifting right MAGA fuck faces. I said like 4-5 years ago the MAGA crowd will eventually go so far right they'll alienate themselves and ultimately create a smaller voter base just by attrition alone. Attacking your own party members because they're not rank and filing is the easiest way for that to happen.

All they need for party control is a majority of the GOP. Ever since Nixon, there have been about 25% of the GOP as dead-enders. Nixon left office with 24% support. They've been weaponized. They won't dissolve. They may find another guru as yet unidentified who is more adept than Trump. It's not going to be over for a long time.

At least the prospect of this deplorable part of the citizenry just gliding in for the kill is now set aside. Viva la resistencia!

Well NV, Arizona and Georgia are important. NV is not a populated state but even a small shift can impact in a state that is normally pretty close. Same with AZ and GA. Some of these states will be 2 points or less and even her doing 1-2% better than Biden did will make her chances of winning easier

Also 100% matters - if she does better with them, better chance of picking off some CA house seats and holding onto the RGV seats

He is obsessed with ratings. He'll go nuts denying the results of all polls leading to the election. He will lapse into repetitive gibberish about how wronged he is and everybody else is a bad guy.

He'll exit as a clown. Sadly, he'll never accept it. He'll keep milking the cult hopefully from a cell in the psych ward of a federal prison.

Sure, she has to keep them.  I'm just thinking out loud about how she should target various demographics.  If say 2/3 of the targeted group can't effect change, it's worth considering given somewhat limited resources.

I live in one of about 8 districts that has a dem in the state legislature and a trump flag went up around the corner. Pretty disheartening, but i posted in 2020 after Biden won, a bunch of American flags went up on my street the following day, including my house. But in general, it really does feel that the full maga movement is far more muted this time around.

This shit never makes sense to me. How fucking stupid do you have to be to potentially aliente potential customers? There's a restaurant by our house, with mediocre food, but a huge outdoor space and playground that is good for kids. It's the fastest growing county in Texas, but it's also I believe one of the reddest counties in Texas. It went 71% for Trump in 2020. You're basically talking about The Woodlands and Conroe and rural areas around it.  It doesn't have to be gerrymandered, it's just red AF.

. . . and then there's Penzeys Spices, which has this blurb on their website:

About Republicans

  Reveal hidden contents

About Republicans

As we’ve now said on our first-ever About Us page on our website, there’s something unique about humankind’s relationship with spices that time and again have caused spices to be a driving force for change. We live in a time calling out for change and for solutions to the very real problems our country and our planet face. There’s two very different futures ahead for us totally dependent on whether we solve these problems or not. With so much at stake we feel obligated to use the unique position spices hold in our lives to try to help promote the solutions to these problems as best we can.

Watching the slow decline of the Republican Party over the last half century, and the steep decline/bottom falling out over the last decade, it can be easy to see the nonsense that has overtaken the party as pretty much random. Once you start seriously looking at the problems America and the world face and who and what are standing in the way of solving those problems, it quickly becomes clear there is nothing random to what the Republicans are promoting.

The Republican departure from conservative values and embrace of what, from a distance, looks a whole lot like insanity didn’t happen by chance. All of it has been intelligently crafted with the goal of preserving the position of those who profit from the inhumanity that is at the very roots of pretty much every problem we are facing. From the environment, to racism/discrimination, to health, to saving our democracy at home and growing it abroad, half the time Republicans are intentionally blocking the solution to the problems we face. The other half of the time they are the problem we face.

The truth of our time is we’ve arrived at the point where there’s no way to respect the nonsense the Republican Party is promoting and have any hope of overcoming the problems we as a nation and we as a planet face. Given the choice between saving America and planet Earth or saving the feelings of Republican voters, we are choosing to side with saving our country and our world. I’m sorry it’s come to this.

And no, there is no HATE!!! in any of this. There is a whole lot of propaganda at the heart of much of how Republican voters have been steered away from conservative values to what they now seem all too happy to vote for. The thing to remember about propaganda is that it doesn’t just misinform, it also works to make people immune from the truth by convincing them any facts that counter their propaganda are nothing more than HATE!!! But we really have no hate for Republican voters. None at all.

I actually like and respect most of you guys. Sure, there are a growing number that are there for the racism, but I still believe the majority of you have good hearts that want to help and do the right thing. I know you to be trustworthy, and honest, and funny, and caring, and good souls. The problem isn’t what you are, the problem is what you are now voting to support. You guys have been turned around.

Remember when your distrust of big city types, and your deep rooted beliefs in paying your debts, respecting your marriage, raising kids willing to serve, honoring your word, and going to church every week had you voting for Donald Trump over Joe Biden all because Biden’s son had a computer? Or how you couldn’t vote for Hillary because she was over-prepared and used emails? I know that to you your actions seem rational and in keeping with your values, but when it comes to voting you are now consistently voting in people who are the exact opposite of you and the values you hold dear.

What does any of this mean? Going forward we would still be glad to have you as customers, but we’re done pretending the Republican Party’s embrace of cruelty, racism, Covid lies, climate change denial, and threats to democracy are anything other than the risks they legitimately are. If you need us to pretend you are not creating the hurt you are creating in order for you to continue to be our customer, I’m sad to say you might be happier elsewhere.

If on the other hand you still want the best spices and don’t need us to respect what you now vote for to be our customer, Hooray! We are happy to have you here, but know that we will, on a regular basis, try to wake you up from this dream that has you believing there is anything conservative left at all to what the Republican Party has become. We can and will work without Republicans to solve the problems we face, but it sure would be nice to get back to a time where Republicans were equal defenders of equality, the environment, and democracy. We look forward to that day.

Thanks for reading. Thanks for being here,

Bill
