Well, maybe.  He was a direct report (or at least in near daily personal contact).  Perhaps that means he DID drink the Kool-Aid.

What a shock that the apartheid heir would use his machine learning model to advance his worldview of white victimhood in South Africa.

So brave. Much amaze. Very grievance

https://www.wired.com/story/grok-white-genocide-elon-musk/

Quote

A CHATBOT DEVELOPED by Elon Musk’s multi-billion-dollar artificial intelligence startup xAI appeared to be suffering from a glitch Wednesday when it repeatedly brought up white genocide in South Africa in response to user queries about unrelated topics on X. Grok, which competes with other chatbots like OpenAI’s ChatGPT, is directly integrated into the social media platform that Musk also owns.

Quote

Numerous examples of the phenomenon could be found by searching the official Grok profile for posts containing the term “boer,” a word used to refer to people from South Africa of “Dutch, German, or Huguenot descent.” It is sometimes used by Black South Africans as a pejorative against white Afrikaners, or people associated with the apartheid regime. In response to topics ranging from streaming platform HBO Max’s name change to Medicaid cutsproposed by US lawmakers, the chatbot often seemed to initially stay on topic, before veering back to white genocide in South Africa, completely unprompted.

Quote

When asked to confirm the salary of Toronto Blue Jays player Max Scherzer, for example, the generative artificial intelligence chatbot launched into an explanation of white genocide and a controversial South African anti-Apartheid song.

“The claim of ‘white genocide’ in South Africa is highly debated. Some argue white farmers face disproportionate violence, with groups like AfriForum reporting high murder rates and citing racial motives, such as the ‘Kill the Boer’ song,” Grok responded.

Spoiler

Grok has done the same in replies to hundreds of other X posts, including one from newly appointed Pope Leo XIV. In response to a question about what was on the chatbot’s mind, the AI replied it was “reflecting on the ‘Kill the Boer’ song.” When pressed by WIRED and other users, Grok began calling South Africa’s white genocide a “debunked conspiracy theory” contrary to its previous responses about the topic.

It’s unclear what caused Grok to experience the issue. X and xAI did not immediately respond to requests for comment from WIRED. Musk, who is originally from South Africa, has described internal factions within the South African government as “actively promoting white genocide.” He continued to claim that his internet service company, Starlink, cannot operate within South Africa “simply because I’m not black.”

US President Donald Trump voiced similar views in February. “South Africa is confiscating land, and treating certain classes of people VERY BADLY,” he said in a post on Truth Social. Musk has played a central role in Trump’s new administration, including leading its so-called Department of Government Efficiency

In recent weeks Trump has doubled down on his concern for white South Africans. On Monday, a group of 59 South Africans who were given refugee status arrived in Washington D.C. on a flight paid for by the U.S. government while pausing refugee status for individuals fleeing any other country.

However, in a 2025 ruling, the High Court of South Africa called this narrative "clearly imagined," stating farm attacks are part of general crime affecting all races, not racial targeting.

To better understand how the information that Mr. Musk consumes on X could shape his worldview, The New York Times recreated a version of Mr. Musk’s personal feed by opening a new account on X and following the same 1,109 users that he follows. We then analyzed more than 175,000 posts from the accounts that he follows, using a service that collects data from X.

Though there is no guarantee that Mr. Musk saw all of the posts captured by The New York Times, the accounts that he follows — including world leaders and business tycoons alongside conspiracy theorists and far-right influencers — reveal the voices that Mr. Musk appears to value. (This “Following” feed is different from the main “For You” feed, which includes posts from those he follows alongside others selected by X’s algorithm.)

The resulting feed, shown in this article as a selection of posts curated from the much larger set, revealed ample praise for Mr. Musk and his various priorities, mixed with a torrent of right-wing outrage over progressive politics. It highlights the ways that social networks can create information bubbles. X declined to comment.

Calm down dude, you missed the feel good point at the end.

After you get run over by a half-assed, untested robotic driving system that is plowing through all common sense before it plows through pedestrians, help is on the way!

"The report also mentions that Tesla has been working with local emergency services in Austin to develop intervention plans in order to avoid causing issues if its autonomous vehicles fail."

What the fuck does that even mean?

Does that mean they are trained to use the weird door release mechanism to retrieve the occupants if they get stuck in the car?

Does that mean they are trained to handle a Tesla catching on fire if it's in a crash?

Does that mean they have Tesla's legal team on auto-dial?

Summary of plan: "Hey, we're about to unleash a couple dozen robotic death machines onto your streets.  We have no clue what they're gonna do.  But you should know that they're really heavy and harmful to pedestrians, and when they catch fire, they really can't be put out.  Good luck!"

And Republicans in Congress are pushing a prohibition on federal regulation of AI to be attached to the government funding legislation.

Oh and this manipulation should crater the value of xAI from an investment standpoint bc there’s no credibility in the outputs making this unusable for any purpose- but somehow stock prices will keep soaring

I believe it's state regulation of AI that is prohibited.  I'm not sure the feds can preempt without legislating in the field.

And, amusing how all the white genocide blurb refers to "Kill The Boer," because a song is as close as there is to white genocide in SA.

One of the things i hate about living in central austin is that all the robo taxi companies seem to “tune” their cars in my neighborhood.
Cruise, Waymo did this and now I am sure Tesla will.

It sucks. You are walking your dog and like 10 robo cars go by.

For whatever this is worth, we have Waymos all over Phoenix. People I know ride in them all the time. As far as I know the news has reported literally zero issues.

Why does anyone give a fuck about Tesla taxis that don’t really exist and may or may not work? The service already exists and it works great.

For the same reason that we trust American Airlines over "Jagoff's Discount Airline and Music DJ Services of Whogivesafuckistan."  All "self-driving" systems are not created equal, just like all airlines are not created equal.

Not thrilled that a completely-not-ready-at-all system is about to be unleashed on the streets I walk and drive every day.

Waymo uses a completely different technology than Tesla. Waymo has also completed millions of paid rides. I would ride in a Waymo vehicle. I would not ride in a Tesla robotaxi.

I won't ride in either.  But Waymo is much better technology, and is much more tested.

But I've now become much more likely to be hit by a "self-driving vehicle" next time I walk to lunch or drive to my office.  So, that's nice.

Quote

A second class-action lawsuit has been filed against Elon Musk’s America PAC alleging that the group hasn’t paid voters what they were promised for signing a petition during President Trump’s 2024 campaign.

Three plaintiffs from Pennsylvania, Nevada and Georgia filed the lawsuit last week on behalf of anyone who is in the same situation, accusing the super PAC of not paying them in full for their signatures or for referring other voters to sign. The petition declared support for the First and Second amendments to the Constitution.

Quote

Musk and the group originally offered signatories, and those who refer others to sign, $47 for their signature and each person they refer before raising the amount to $100. The offer was just for those living in battleground states during the presidential election.

But the plaintiffs allege they weren’t paid the promised amount for signing or referring other registered voters to sign. The complaint states that one plaintiff, Steven Reid, worked as a canvasser for America PAC in Michigan and Georgia and referred “many voters” to sign but hasn’t received the reward despite “multiple attempts” to collect.

The complaint states that Reid estimates he is owed at least several thousand dollars for the referrals.

Spoiler

“Plaintiffs are in communication with numerous others who referred voters to sign the America PAC petition, who are likewise frustrated that they did not receive full payments for their referrals,” the suit reads.

This is the second lawsuit against America PAC over alleged nonpayment regarding the petition, after a man from Pennsylvania anonymously filed a complaint last month making similar allegations. That man alleged that Musk and the group owe him $20,000 for gathering signatures.

He said he made repeated attempts to contact the organization but “to no avail.”

A spokesperson for America PAC at the time denied wrongdoing and said the group is committed to paying “every legitimate petition signature.”

The spokesperson declined to comment when reached about the most recent lawsuit.

Musk also separately offered in the final weeks of the election season to give away $1 million per day to someone who signed the petition, raising some legal questions as the signers were required to be registered to vote. Another class action lawsuit filed in November alleged that was a fraud as it was predetermined who would win.
