the Zalatoris looking like Gilmore caddy thing was a deal on the PGA tour when Zalatoris broke out 2022.

That was a good bit and Zalatoris embraced the comparison but I've always thought he's more Beavis than HG caddie.

Completely stupid, but they were satirizing LIV.

Interesting that they used Dechambeau and Koepka to play on the "good guys" side too.

Ok, this was better than expected. A bit cheesy and some of the callback jokes to the first movie feel a bit forced but did a good job of being its own story. And holy shit at the number of cameos.

My one big annoyance was them splicing in clips from the first movie as flashbacks to make reference to the same joke..... why? Are there really any people going to watch this that haven't seen the first movie?

That said, I was fucking dying laughing at Will Zalatoris being the caddy from the first movie.

My wife and I were lounging by the pool on Saturday and we didn't have plans for later. She said, "We can watch Happy Gilmore 2" tonight and I said, sure. (We have a friend who was drunk texting us about it on Friday.) After cleaning the kitchen, we fired it up. About 30 mins in, I asked her if she'd seen HG1. She laughed and said, "Nope." We laughed and laughed and laughed. Now it's on the list before it leaves Netflix on 7/31. (Not sure I have the DVD/BR for that one. That was back in the VHS days.)

At any rate, it was an easy way to kill two hours. Using the actual footage from HG1 for the callback jokes was probably unnecessary. I've been a Sandler fan since his SNL days and he seems like a really great dude in real life but he's definitely lost his fastball. If the original HG is an 8 or 9, this is a 6 at best. I laughed at points. The comparison to Caddyshack 2 is legit -- the mini-golf themed Bushwood vs the tricked-up LIV-style Maxi Tour was kinda similar.

The PGA and LIV announced their plans to "merge" in June 2023, which was a complete shock to everyone. A script for HG2 almost certainly existed in some form before then. I'm guessing the rival golf league was initially a much more on the nose stand in for LIV. Then, everyone in the golf world had to make nice, so they probably pivoted to the Maxi hip surgery and ridiculousness to lessen the LIV comparisons. And allowed them to bring in Bryson and Brooks as good guys in the fight for the future of "regular golf."

I thoroughly enjoyed it and was way better than I expected. Kept pretty true to the original with some over the top cartooney humor and like others have said we loved it back then and can't really criticize it now. The cameos were pretty good. I don't watch golf but caught some of the people in the room. The Maxi thing was almost certainly inspired by LIV but it went over the top as one should expect from the Happy Madison universe so didn't bother me at all.

we played 18 Sunday morning....one of my buddies marks his ball about four feet from the cup and says to the other, who is a good 45+ feet away, "is my mark in your line?" I'm standing right there, the mark is clearly in the line, but it ain't my business. Buddy says, "nah, I'll never make it" and putts. The ball hits the mark, bounces a little bit and goes in the hole.

and then I watched HG2 last night

so...how long until "patrons" are yelling "that's what she said!" when Xander tees off?

I hadn’t seen HG1 all the way through in decades. Our kids are 11 - maybe a bit early but pretty much in the sweet spot for this humor. We had a fucking blast this weekend watching HG1 on Friday - the first time we introduced it to our kids - and HG2 last night.

The second half was stupid, but for a golf fan like myself it was still well worth the effort of the sequel. Fun cameos all the way around, some good lines, and a lot of connectivity to the current zeitgeist (Zalatoris and Scheffler being the most obvious, Daly, Spirinac, LIV etc.).

And y'all make a good point about how the second half of the movie might have gone down given the timing. LA Golf and Bryson might have the biggest windfall out of all of this - they were everywhere.

I'm not sure that LIV merging with PGA would have changed the story line all that much. The Maxi league had to be over the top absurd for the story line to work in Happy Madison style.

The best part was HG playing that round on that muni course and getting hammered. The rest was forgettable

I kinda wished Eric Andre had just followed him around and become his caddy but Bad Bunny was an acceptable substitute.
