I think he'll be fired either way, but I also think firing and announcing a replacement very quickly is preferable to a long interim situation. If we can wait a bit to finalize his replacement I think that makes sense.

Neither option is great, clearly. I'd take fired, no matter how/when it goes down.

I think you have to set a deadline.  He will be fired by that date.  “Ideally we’d like to have everything in place, but either way, as of that date he’s gone.“

But you gotta set a deadline.  I say day before yesterday.

This can’t be a real quote.  Can it?

Yeah, I thought it was the bourbon talking then I realized I'd only had a couple of sips.   The entire presser was bizarre and proof positive that Herman is just lost, completely lost.

And, yeah, about that "pay cut" he's taking during COVID but will be paid to him at a later day.   For starters, may want to just consider that cut to be permanent.

I think that is all up in the air. As of last night, no timing had been decided.

As I wrote this morning, issues like team dysfunction over The Eyes and beyond poor play on the field are likely to cost Tom Herman his job.

The timing has not been decided.

Why the fuck not?  If you're even considering it or waiting for the next loss - just get it over with and appoint an interim.

This. But if they do fire TH and say appoint Meathead Staff Member X as interim HC under NO FUCKING CIRCUMSTANCES and I mean his ass wins out and the players all say "He's great" do you promote that motherfucker to the head coach position. Fuck that noise.

I’m sorry but that’s extremely short sighted. It’s rare for an interim coach to do better than the person he replaced, history is firmly behind that. You’re already paying the guy, and whoever you hire to replace him is extremely unlikely (read, absolutely not going to) come in to coach for the Baylor game, so just get as much out of him as you can knowing it’s not going to be great, prepare your pitch and initiate conversations where possible with the replacement, and bite the bullet for the remainder of the year.

Keeping around a guy like Tom Herman given the situation will only create a worse atmosphere around the team than that which already exist.

The current head coach is lost, period.     Can an interim coach be any less lost?    Not sure how.

And FWIW not seeing another Texas game until Halloween.   The Baylor COVID situation is really dicey.

I would think it would be impossible to know if the interim did better or worse than how the previous coach would have done.

And there have been successful interim coaches while how many dead-man walking coaches have been successful?

I mean if we had fired John Mackovic after the UCLA game would his assistant coach replacement gone better or worse than 4-7? Who knows? I don't. So why do you claim this is a known quality?

So we get a month to prepare, like a bowl game. Then we fire Herman immediately afterwards, like a bowl game. I like this idea

Ideally the firing happens as soon as the numbers and funds are finalized. Ideally in the next 7-10 days. An interim HC is named for the rest of the season. We bite the bullet on this season. Name the new HC within the the next few weeks so he can salvage this class, put together his staff. The new regime takes over as soon as the final whistle of the final regular season game is blown.

We're Texas, so none of this will happen, of course.

Matt isnt the guy.  Going from Herman to Matt is a lateral move and one to satisfy a temporary emotion.   Then in 3 years we would be bitching about how much we hate MC and how we need a new coach, and how much it will cost to pay off this one.

Do you watch football?  They are so much better coached than we are.

This just gets more absurd the more I’m reminded by you guys of all of Herman’s bullshit punishments.

Your pee is too yellow?  You are shamed as a bad person, humiliated in front of your teammates and punished.

Half of the team loses a practice session against their teammates every day.  Well, guess what, losers, you have to eat burnt toast and runny eggs suffer other stupid bullshit punishments.   None of you should be losing, even when you play each other and someone has to lose!  And even if everyone played well and it just so happens the guy opposite you played better!  Welcome to the real world, bitches, where all your employers will no  doubt have separate winners and losers cafeterias.

HOWEVER, if any of you commit a foolish penalty that hurts the team in an actual game, that shows an actual lack of discipline or character when it matters most that directly costs us wins on the field ... look, I just can’t in good conscience punish THAT.   Let me ask you real nicely not to do that again, while I make sure you eat filet mignon - unlike that dipshit who had the audacity to lose a rep in practice, because fuck him!

Oh for Pete’s sake, he said that no one was sicker about the penalties than the players. Isn’t that tough enough?

A one year unrestricted college free agency with new Head Coach Urban Meyer is a perfect scenario for Texas.

A one year unrestricted college free agency with lame duck Tom is an utter catastrophe for Texas.

If we want to hire Urban Meyer AND we have already decided to fire Tom Herman than not doing so ASAP is a dangerous move. Coaching is not just about winning games this season, it is a 12 month a year job with important recruiting and future plans and strategies to work out. Having somebody in there with no stake in the future for months and months because he knows he is gone is a disaster. He at least has to have some reason to think if he turns it around he can stay. Herman might not be a genius coach but you don't have to be a genius to know when you are about to be fired. We all saw Mack Brown trying to get the recruits to go elsewhere in his lame duck period. What damage might Tom Herman do on his way out?

Actually for the same reason keeping Tom Herman a day longer than the decision to fire him has been made is a disastrous plan, even if we don't have an Urban Meyer willing to take the job. I don't see any benefit for keeping an angry coach around with great power to fuck us around for months. Unless the coach is just a very principled and honorable person but we all know what kind of jerk coaches can be and they are rarely held responsible for it. Even fucking Bobby Petrino got numerous chances. Herman could tank Texas and walk into another job and nobody would care.

The only answer is Urban.  We've tried the "up and coming" defensive disciplinarian.  We've tried the "up and coming" offensive hotshot with local ties.  Now it's time to act like we are the University of Texas.  If Urban says no, make a better offer and ask again.  There's no excuse for not being able to pull a guy away from doing pregame shows to coach this team.

That's not a healthy attitude because, when Urban doesn't come, you're going to be disappointed with any other hire.

The OL will all weigh 190lbs if Herman is going to start punishing players for shitty penalties by running them.

Here is the thing based on experience in management at a variety of levels:

It is far easier to start hard and then relax as people earn your respect via performance vs start lax and then try and become a hardass.

Herman is going about this completely backwards. By trying to be tough on the team's shitty play (penalties/bad decisions/quitting on team etc) now after having just let it happen for four years on his watch will not work and will only serve to make things worse.

He is showing his ass here and frankly his overall lack of knowing how to manage through adversity.

Backwards, you say?

Now look at it from the perspective where Urban is our head coach. Think of the talent that will want to come play for him. He'd have to turn people away.

more passive aggressive Tom.   he specifically stated it such that he is saying Mack Brown and Urban Meyer don't punish players for foolish penalties but he is going to now.

Not if it is Dabo or Saban instead!

While you are correct, I will still be disappointed without a proven winner being hired on.  The obvious one is sitting there without a coaching job right now.  We may strike gold and find the next Dabo, but that isn't what we do around here.  We hire Hermans and Charlies and in the best case Mack Browns.

This thread reads like the last years of FUPM. I would expect Herman to get much shottier and much more passive aggressive. Keep in mind he learned from the best.

I can't imagine that it is very fun to be a dead man walking. FUPM was a whole different thing: Mack was probably in disbelief that he could be fired. He thought his BMD buddies would have his back.

Yep. Keeping Mack around for months after he should have been fired was awesome.

At least it gave Strong the excuse of having the cupboard left bare. If we keep Herman around for months after the decision to fire him has been made then we can expect another bare cupboard.

Ash was beyond fucking terrible as a Head Coach at Rutgers - but I'd have no problem if CDC handed him the interim title.  Ash can coach the defense and allow Yurcich to coach the offense without Herman's meddling and lets finish out this season.

LSU fired Miles after a 2-2 start and he had been an enormous success. We can certainly fire a failure. I would also be fine with this if CDC has made the decision.

The question is if that has happened.

Haven't we already established that the pee chart is a pretty normal thing? Can't we focus on Tom's results without having to go gather a bunch of probably irrelevent bullshit?

I don't know about a pee chart but swinging around sledgehammers, toting baseball bats on the team bus, sporting gold teeth and oversized jewelry, kissing players, mocking an opposing team's QB (albeit deserved) and god knows what else this clown does are gimmicky, and simply weird.   At $7MM / year, it's comical to be displaying and (I assume) relying upon candy-ass shtick to help produce results instead of focusing on things that matter.  Like planning, scheming, instilling discipline and a slew of other things.  Things real coaches do.

We can focus on results.   And it'd be easy to say none of the above would matter if Herman was successful.  But he's not.  He's showing to be an unbridled failure.  The bizarre things he does are just indicative of someone who, instead of focusing on and prioritizing things that matter,  is the definition of a fraud.

The first time I saw him doing that "put all your chips in!" motivational thingy during 2018, I knew. Fucking players, suited up with helmets and pads, carrying plastic casino chips to put in a pot before they walked onto the field.
