This is such bullshit.

MSU yes, we faced the backup.

Oklahoma, nope they had moved on from Arnold.

Georgia - nope

Vanderbilt - nope

Florida - yes

Arkansas - nope

Kentucky - yes after the starter got benched that is a coaching decision just like OU.

aggy - nope you had moved on from Weigman several games before

Georgia - not really since we knocked their starter out of the game.

Florida - maybe

OU - likely

So, it's more like 4 times in our 11 SEC games.

Yeah, but Looch wrote "something like seven" and in an Aggie version of math four is basically the same thing as seven.

That's the worst news possible.  He'll play against Texas with a club-hand and complete 28 of 31 for 500 yards and 7 TDs.

nope, it means the backup will run for 100 and throw for 400.

It's almost October, aggy is undefeated and in the top 10 for a moment, and Looch can't stop making excuses for how many games Texas is about to win.

They all know what is coming.

Tin foil hat on....  the news about Mateer and Lagway is just noise to throw preparation off. In reality they are just holding them back to energize them for game-day against us. 😉

I will be absolutely fucking flabbergasted if this team manages to go 10-2. The interior of the offensive line is a tire fire of mediocrity. Our skill position players are comprised of JAGs as far as the eye can see. Our quarterback appears to be a head case who needs to play one of the worst teams in FBS to "get right". Our offensive coordinator has a fucking seizure every time the offense moves inside of the 20 yard line. And we balance all of that with being one of the most penalized teams in the country.

We have an elite defense and an elite punter. Unless Sark decides to start managing games like we're the 2001 Ravens, we aren't sniffing the playoffs.

Well, I've seen mediocre offensive line interiors play for national championships at Texas, so I don't think it's the limitation you do. I do not believe the skill position players are JAGs. I believe the panacea for head cases is getting little wins to build confidence. I do not know whether it happens with Manning. I just know it can. There's not a magic wand where Sam Houston State is some kind of cure all pill, but there is a reality where performing well week after week cures him of the yips. That's not some kind of delusion on my part. That's how it works.

Texas has had issues inside the red zone the last two years and yet Texas still made the playoffs. Again, I don't see it as the limitation you do.

I look at our schedule and it looks very manageable to me. Like the saying goes, I don't have to outrun the bear, I just have to outrun the guy next to me. And the guy next to me - as in our future opponents - do not scare me all that much other than Georgia, and they have their own issues as well. Plus that's so far down the road let's see what each team is doing heading into that week.

The offense is not a rolling ball of butcher knives, admittedly. But the defense is. And I believe the offense has a lot more potential upside than you do, with a long runway to get there, thanks to the defense and the opponents.

Sweet OU will be playing a backup QB. We always shut backup QBs down

I get the reference but for specifically OU...

2009: Landry Jones comes in. OU gets 13

2021: Caleb Williams comes in. OU wins with 55.

222: Davis Beville plays. OU gets shutout.

2024: Hawkins plays. OU gets 3.

Pretty decent for our defense. This year feels eerily similar to 2009 with the ratio of how good our team is compared to how much whining about our team our fans are doing. Plus some of the offensive struggles.

MSU would have needed more help than their starter > backup delta to win that one.

Tim Tebow wouldn't have done shit last year for UF - they got fucking smoked.

Also both Texas playoff teams featured multiple wins by our own backup QBs.

It’s an off week for the Longhorns, so it’s supposed to be a slow news week.

Well, yesterday was anything but.

**

First, Oklahoma announced its Heisman front-running quarterback, John Mateer, would have surgery later today in Los Angeles for a problem with his throwing hand. The surgery is expected to sideline Mateer for at least a month.

For those calculating such things, that length of time is just enough for Mateer to miss the Red River Rivalry with the Longhorns.

OU coach Brent Venables already announced sophomore Michael Hawkins as the starter in the Sooners’ game in 11 days against Kent State. It’s highly likely Hawkins will also be the starter against the Horns in the Cotton Bowl again this year.

Oklahoma will still have its top-notch defense in Dallas. But there’s a decidedly different threat- and experience-level between Mateer and anyone else taking snaps for the Sooners.

The implications of this injury are far-reaching, not only for the game in the Cotton Bowl but also the Sooners’ playoff hopes and the future of Brent Venables as OU head coach.

**

Second, the SEC announced conference matchups for all of its teams over the next four years.

Here’s what it looks like:

Next year, the Longhorns host Florida, Ole Miss, Mississippi State and Arkansas while going to Tennessee, Texas A&M, LSU and Missouri. Of course, the OU game remains in Dallas.

Add Ohio State coming to Austin during non-conference play, and the schedule is perhaps the best in my time covering the Longhorns.

It’s simply a great time to be a Longhorn fan.

Hook’Em!

Towsend continues to be physical. This guy will be a beast before he leaves. Sark needs to reward him with a few catches. He is probably the most physical TE right now.

Because the quarterback threw catchable passes?

its amazing the overreaction people have had

if arch simply hits most of the wide open passes he has horribly missed so far this year, texas beats ohio st, dominates sjsu and utep more than they did, is ranked #1 and the overwhelming favorite to win it all.

sure texas got some weaker areas (mainly OL and injured RB room), but so many of them are minimized heavily if he just hits wide open guys at a reasonable rate lol

i mean if Arch can show he can do this consistently against the teams we're about to face , we'll win and we're in. its the consistency he hasn't shown just yet.

i hope he's through whatever spot he was in , florida and OU will tell us if we're a playoff team or not imo

A few team notes from IT

Spoiler

If you’ve followed Steve Sarkisian long enough, you know he’ll throttle up and throttle down depending on the time of year and season. A bye week before a rigorous conference slate is a time to throttle down and keep the guys fresh and healthy.

Key Injuries and Expected Returns

As IT detailed last week, a number of injured players will return for Florida. Most notable are Tre Wisner and Alex January. IT thinks CJ Baxter will be back as well, but that isn’t confirmed. With the offensive line seemingly blocking better, it will be nice to see Wisner and his steady hand back on the field. You might not have missed January because of the level of competition and how well the room played in his absence, but getting him back for Florida is big. Florida runs a lot of 12 personnel, meaning Texas will have three D-tackles on the field at the same time quite a bit.

Wide receiver Emmett Mosley is running more and more while the team practices, but he isn’t practicing fully. Given the rest of the returnees aren’t practicing this week, he could very well return on Monday. He does, in fact, exist.

Practice Schedule and Florida Prep

The team is in half pads today and Thursday, then off for a long weekend beginning Friday. They are already prepping for Florida. Like you, from Sark down to the players, they’re excited to watch a loaded slate this weekend.

Opponent Quarterback News

Injury news on opposing quarterbacks is circulating throughout the program. It should come as no surprise, but Texas wants DJ Lagway (Florida) and John Mateer (OU) at full strength when Texas meets them in the next few weeks. They want teams at their best as a way to measure where the defense is at. Maybe for some other reasons, too…

Players of the Game vs. Sam Houston State

Players of the game against Sam Houston State were Arch Manning on offense and Brad Spence and Jelani McDonald on defense. Coaches liked what they saw from Arch, including his public displays of confidence. They just want him to get going. Now the offense knows how it can play, and the expectations should be higher than they were previously.

Jelani McDonald’s Rising Draft Stock

IT asked about McDonald potentially leaving after three years before the season. We don’t want to put the cart ahead of the horse, but we do like being early on information. There were some who felt in August that he was the best safety in the program, and NFL scouts will likely see it that way with his size and athleticism. Remember us reporting on who could replace Andrew Mukuba’s ball skills? The answer was McDonald. NFL scouts will be all over his interception at the end of the first half due to the sheer athleticism and concentration it required. The NFL loves ball production. This isn’t common:

Early Entry Tracker: Goosby’s Decision

Our Early Entry Tracker has McDonald leaving, but right now we’re leaning toward offensive tackle Trevor Goosby staying. This will come down to his NFL grade and assurances he’ll go in the first round—and probably even the top 20 picks. Under no circumstance would he leave like Cam Williams. Goosby is taking a similar view to Arch Manning. His preference is to go when he’s ready for the NFL, not when the NFL is ready for him.

Retention is going to be a MASSIVE focus this offseason and Texas will likely be more aggressive when it comes to keeping Goosby than anyone.

I don't think so. Just the generic stuff - don't give OU any excuses, competitors want to compete, rivalry stuff etc. That's my guess anyway. It's IT so they could just be injecting something provocative.

The weirdest thing is, I'm not sure if he realizes it or not, but he actually complimented our defense.  That had to hurt.

Does not seem to be affecting the other TEs. I may have missed it, but I do not remember him getting a target this season. He is being used as a blocker and he is the most athletic TE on the roster. I love his willingness to be physical and take on a role that nobody expected from him. I would just like him to be rewarded for doing the dirty work. Your comment is probably more applicable to Wingo with 28 targets and 13 catches. That connection alone is 37% of Arch's incompletions. Hopefully, SHSU is the start of that being fixed.
