Besides, I'm not a Democrat so I don't support the KKK.

You realize that this sentence necessarily means that only Dems support the KKK, right? That’s your actual point?  No fucking way that you actually think that.

I was thinking about Beto's anthem kneeling comments and whether they would hurt him with "independents" or "undecideds."  But honest question - are there any "independents" or "undecideds" out there anymore?

The country is so polarized and seemingly everyone lives in their own bubble and echo chamber that I can't imagine there are many, if any, John Q Publics out there whose vote is going to change based on anything that happens in the next 60 days (short of a dead girl or live boy scenario).

Beto (and Cruz for that matter) may end up getting more votes if they focus on turning out the "base" (whatever the "base" is these days) than making a play for independents, moderates, or undecideds.

Watching Beto's rally in Fort Worth streaming live on Facebook - this guy is an incredibly talented orator.  Better than Obama.  He would absolutely kill it at a convention.

I never found Obama to be that great of a speaker. Thought he was better in the one on one setting. Think Beto is way better, best I’ve seen in a long while.

It's always amazing watching a Trump cultist shit his pants over and over again and think he's owning everyone else.

It's even more amazing when an idiot projects his stupidity.

The only post I agree with.

Beto scheduled an event in El Paso on August 31 - guess no debate in DFW that night.

I don’t think there is much upside for Cruz to debate Beto.  Is Cruz really going to convince an undecided much less a Beto supporter to vote for him (Cruz)?      I was Cruz or his strategists, I would do everything possible to keep attention away from Beto.   Debates would really only help Beto.

Beto knows how to connect with a crowd on an individual scale. You really feel he's talking to you from the heart not just spewing talking points to drown out the opposition. Im feeling more confident the closer this gets. We've yet to see the final medial blitz, but if the best Cruz has is Beto in a dress playing guitar or the NFL protest, Beto has the momentum to win this. His positive, common sense message and his dedication to visit every county in Texas and listen to anyone that had a question proves he's worthy of support.

Ted was flown here. Beto was grown here.

Not only answer every question, but he stood for 20 minutes to shake the hand of anyone who was interested and to let them get pics as well.   At least he did in Huntsville, I am sure he does it other places too.

I am firmly independent and will be voting for Beto...so there's at least one.

Doesn't sound very Texan to me. That type of rhetoric is exactly what you get in California, New York, Illinois. So who is chomping who?

Ted needs to go, but Beto is not the answer.

You have got to be kidding. Are you even from Texas? You'd rather keep Cruz for 6 more years and reward his total lack of integrity and scruples than fire him, because of Lance Armstrong and some fucking okeydoke about gun bullshit? Seriously, man. You are being played for a sucker. What on earth would be worse than Ted Cruz? Do you not understand how bad at his job this guy is?

Obama was great until he got off script. Then he had a hard time bringing it back to point and made mistakes. He gets more credit than he deserves because he followed W, who was a worse speaker, and ran against Hillary, McCain, and Romney none of whom were capable of firing up a crowd at all.  Then he was followed by Trump who is zero substance and only about firing up a crowd.

Bill Clinton was much better at working the crowd while maintaining his overall speech. Beto seems more like Bill than Obama, but I haven't seen much of Beto's speeches yet. It sucks that he'll have to play politics from the backseat once he loses to Cruz. He has national politics written all over him, but it's tough to do that from the House.

So I’ve been seeing this Soros thing on Beto because apparently of all the millions donated to Beto the 71k soros allegedly donated makes Beto a puppet to socialism.

1. Last I saw Beto had received over 100,000 from J street.

2. J street is consolidating individual donations each below the limit. I am not aware of a donation from Soros but he is entitled to his $2700.

3. J street donors support a 2 state solution as does Beto. Beto also made statements about moving the embassy not being helpful, which were appreciated by the J street crowd.

4. Reading between the lines it appears that Cruz must be opposed to the 2 state solution.

Come on he has principles... he's looking for a different Republican to replace Cruz.

I think what's more incredulous is the false bravado that somehow Texas policy has it right or better (all the time?) over other states.

Party identity isn't a principle, it's a prison.

Well based on his belief that electing O'Rourke to the United States Senate would change how Texas is run it's pretty clear he has no idea what Ted Cruz's job actually is, so I'm pretty sure he doesn't understand.

Uh, how in the world can more than 1/5 of people be undecided?  Not criticizing, just flabbergasted.

My guess is they aren't pushing undecided like most polls do.  I'd imagine it's some combo of Democratic "Beto who?" respondents and Republican "Ugh, I fucking hate Cruz, I'm not sure what I'll do yet" respondents.

That’s the other thing with all these Rs that say they hate Cruz but vote for him anyway...he had 4 primary challengers who combined for less than 15% or the R primary votes...where were you when you had a chance to replace him with a different Republican?

better the devil you know than the devil you don't.

Damn. From what I understand Emerson is a pretty good polling outlet too. If undecideds are still anywhere north of 10 percent Beto has a great shot. I highly doubt Cruz is swaying anyone that isn't already committed to him. I do wonder if the figure is anywhere near that high - probably a lot of closet Cruz supporters. Though this was online so not the same social pressure as over the phone.

So I'm going to admit something rather embarrassing, but maybe our phone bank people can take this into consideration when making their calls.  I did not realize that US Senators are elected by straight popular vote.  I guess I just had it drilled into my head that candidates were looking to win counties, much like the presidential election.  All the Beto signs in Travis county got me thinking, why does Beto even care about the larger cities?  He should only be worried about flipping the rural counties.  Then I looked up the rules.

My point is, I consider myself pretty hyper aware when it comes to politics these days, but I didn't understand this simple rule.  I can't imagine the general layman who normally wouldn't vote in a midterm understands it either.  I was still going to vote, but I thought of course Travis County is in the bag, so my vote probably wouldn't make much difference.

ETA: I didn't really make a good comparison with the presidential election either, as I know it isn't just about counties, but do y'all get what I'm saying?

I guess one day I will come across a Key and Peele video that makes me laugh, or at least chuckle.

Today is not that day.

I went a while without laughs for them until I saw one where they are fighting aliens disguised as humans.  Wasn't too bad.

That is embarrassing.  But not wholly surprised, our civics education in this country pretty much sucks.

However, he does need to run up the margins in Bexar, El Paso, Harris, Dallas and Travis to offset Cruz's support in West and East Texas.

You may be right on the strategic calculus of trying to win the most votes, but I do consider myself a true independent and am actually undecided on this race (I am somewhat new to Austin although I went to UT and was born in Texas so I am not as familiar with either candidate locally) right now.  I am going to start really looking into this soon but have not yet, and I've voted for Bill Clinton and both Bushes during presidential elections although maybe that is more common than I think.
