Hello darkness my old friend….

well, after not being concerned after a week 1 loss I’m despondent after a 5 score win. Everything that could be glossed over by Arch being wildly inaccurate in week 1 and opening game jitters and playing a blue blood and blah blah blah was there in Week 2. The old saw says you will never see more improvement than between week 1 and 2 is often accurate and if that’s true of this Texas team then we are not good enough.

The rest of our schedule and the SEC in general sucks. I’m still comfortable with my $1000 bet that we will go 10-2 or 11-1 and be favored in all our games (except maybe slight dog at UGA who also has plenty of their own problems) but this team fails in the pass fail standard.

they better get a whole lot better throughout the year. First chance is next week against UTEP. Scoreboard doesn’t matter- play to a standard that doesn’t suck.

What did you see yesterday that's so disheartening in a 5 score win, @Wulaw Horn?

I think they got better, which is hard not to do against an inferior G6 opponent. Arch only made one dumbass mistake, right? You should be upbeat if you still think UT is going 10-2 or 11-1

Dumb penalties, fumbles, dumb decisions stopping ourselves, goal line problems, 3-12 on 3rd downs. The list is long and impressive (like my Johnson).
We can get better. We need to.
the hoopleheads who call 9-3 our ceiling don’t understand the ineptitude on the rest of our schedule.
I thought we had a fair shot at winning the national title this year- this doesn’t look like a teams that can put together 3 or 4 quality game in a row without self-sabotage to get to that standard. Which is the only thing worth considering at this point in our program cycle.

There’s no way this team only loses 1 more game.  Inaccurate QB, lots of jaggy skill guys, OC who hates self scouting, and dumb linemen mean there will be at least a couple more offensive dud performances that get us beat.  It doesn’t matter that there aren’t any world beaters on the schedule.

If you want to go glass half full, who does?  Most of the top 10 played around yesterday with many teams looking worse than we did.  I mean at least we weren't down 16-0 like Clemson.  Not sure there is a dominant team this year.  We have a lot to improve and we very well could miss the playoffs if we don't.  But with talent as dispersed across the country as it is now I just don't think you are going to see those peak Bama/UGA teams and that seemed to be the expectations from our fanbase.  I fully expected our offense to be a work in progress this year (with a flat out average at best OL) although maybe overall slightly behind what I expected.  Wingo and Moore probably biggest disappointments so far along with Arch not being as far along as expected (although I thought all the heisman talk was idiotic and fully expected some WTF moments like his pick yesterday).

Why the fuck would anyone want to post content in a thread this negative? If you’re going to own setting the weekly tone with the game threads, you have a longer way to go than Texas’ offense in terms of improvement.

This where I would like to see our younger guys get some real playing time. Lockett looked pretty good when I saw him. Townsend is a dude, and Washington looks like he can catch, I'm ready to see more of McCutcheon and Ffrench. But first I would like to see Wingo use his fucking hands to catch a ball. I hope Moore is OK, we need him moving forward. I'm not even worried a the defense, so nothing say there other than Littleton has his own island now.

What the fuck are you talking about? He had 5 touchdowns and 318 yards of offense.

This is not the take I thought Wulaw would have coming out of that game after his zero concerns thread. I think everyone needs to just reset your expectations on Arch. He'll be good and with this defense that might be enough against most teams. Is he the Second Coming that everyone seems to have thought he was destined to be, it's way too early to know and way too early to panic that he's not VY 2.0. Maybe we are seeing a bit why Sark kept going with Ewers. Maybe he saw Arch just wasn't ready yet. But everyone heaped all their hopes and dreams on a kid who is still learning. He's still got a lot of time until we need to hit the panic button. Florida was going to be the measuring stick and they certainly don't look super scary. The worst thing for Arch was starting his tenure against the defending champs in their stadium. He didn't get the easy entry that pretty much every QB at Texas in the modern era has gotten. I think he'll be fine.

We're going to be the piss out of UTEP.

The good. We have 3 more cupcakes and bye week to improve before BlowU

the bad. Our receiving Corp reminds me of the james Kirkendol era.

we need to sustain drives its feast or famine and if we need a long soul crushing drive we don’t have the skillset yet to do it.

redone needs fixed. Penalties fixed. 3rd down fixed.   Lots and lots of reps.

the schedule sets up to allow us time to fix all this dog shit. It’s time to see if this coaching staff can do it

We will mudhole  but we need to really fucking mudhole

I tend to get overly critical of the Horns after games when they don’t play to their potential, but this thread is ridiculous. That game was not that bad. Grow a pair, pussies.

Honestly I think OU is the scariest team on our schedule. It's not that they are a great team by any means, but we know Venerables is maybe the best there is at confusing a young QB (his only coaching competency really).

Then offensively, while they mostly suck, Mateer when fully unleashed as a runner will be a problem and will be hard to hold out of the end zone all day, especially with a few short fields. He reminds me of Sam Ehlinger a bit.

So with those two factors together I can see it being a really tough low scoring game if Arch does not improve quickly.

I'm less worried about Arch than the bipolar offense, 100 yards in penalties, and Wingo having an invisible force field around him. Focus on the process instead of results and this game felt like some of those late Mack era games against teams like Rice that looked good on paper, but had some extended ugly stretches. It's never good when an announcer says something like, "[SJSU/Rice/Wyoming/fill in the cupcake] is surprisingly physical."

Watch UTEP fairly regularly as from El Paso.

Offense will try to push the ball downfield and run quick, one read routes.
The UTEP OL is not great - if Texas can’t get pressure, that’s a pretty bad sign.
WRs are okay and can at least stretch the field.
Nelson is okay. Nothing amazing, but does seem to have the arm to hit the deeper passes.
The entire defense is super light. As with the OL, if Texas can’t establish the run against this front, that’s really a bad sign.

Overall, UTEP or SHSU are going to be the worst teams on the schedule, so should be another game to get experience. Really hope that lines can play better this week.

Agreed but we are still so much better than late-era Mack or any version of Herman ball. Ohio State is really fucking good. No one was questioning our physicality week 1. It isn't an accident that on paper we outplayed them but wound up on the wrong side of the scoreboard.

There was a ton of slop and concerns to be raised from the SJSU game. What I don't understand is people still putting Arch at the top of the list of concerns. The kid is an absolute fucking baller and he's only going to get better. At this level you can live with accuracy and completion % issues when the guy under center consistently puts the ball in the EZ, doesn't take sacks and runs the ball like Josh Allen. Everything else will come along.

Worst case this is a "down" year and we have to reload and tinker with some shit (maybe make some staff changes) before taking another crack at it next season.

Anyone that can't enjoy Texas being perennialy relevant on a national level is a sad sack of shit. We all had to sit through a decade+ of Texas being a routine laughingstock. I'm all for high expectations but everything is still in front of this team and they get 2 more tune-ups before their first test in conference. If I'm Florida I am not looking forward to Oct 4th.

Wulaw, lets see how we look in Gainsville.  Arch is still green and isn't familiar enough with the playbook.  When the game slows down, his mechanics and time to throw will improve.  More importantly, we need our run game to improve faster than Arch.  With strong run game and defense, we can get to the playoffs.  One positive development from SJSU is that Arch is starting to develop chemistry with Parker and Endries.  We can build from this but will know more by Gainsville.

I’m actually the opposite.

I’m alarmed from the inaccuracy I’m seeing out of Manning. Throwing a crossing route is just as likely to go to the other team as to one of our guys, IF the ball actually makes it there and doesn’t skip to the intended location.

Add that to his inability to see open receivers and the occasional ducks he throws.

You either have accuracy as a quarterback or you don’t, and while we saw flashes of it last year, nothing this year has led me to believe he will be consistently accurate.

Wtf? It's his 3rd year with this playbook.

You're just making up shit.

Agree with the general idea (fact) that Arch has more time in a college system than most first time starters this decade, but the playbook this year is pretty clearly different than the last couple years

lots of the same concepts in the pass game but there’s still a learning curve to executing in a new way

Wulaw is just pissed because he likely lost a shit load of money betting on the Longhorns to cover. He sees everything through the lens of his gambling addiction.

What do you think an acceptable stat line for Arch is moving forward against teams like that?

Does he need 6 total touchdowns? 7?

350 yards passing? 400?

75 yards rushing?

0 interceptions?

A forced fumble on defense?

Would be nice to see:

- A clean game with far fewer penalties

- Arch consistently hitting his crossing routes and not firing the ball into the ground with poor mechanics

- A 3rd-down conversion rate that isn't horrific

I consider these realistic asks for a team with CFP aspirations, but I'm sure the usual suspects will show up next week to castigate everyone for having unreasonable expectations, demanding too much from Arch and Sark, etc. etc. when these asks aren't met. As is tradition.

The 2024 Texas defense allowed 20 points in a game 2 times in the regular season, and it's not farfetched to say this defense could be better.

Finishing 10-2 or 11-1 does not require Arch Manning to play significantly better.

It will require fewer penalties and some more explosive plays in the run game. I was encouraged by 4.8+ ypc against Ohio State. I was less encouraged by what we did without Wisner against SJST.  Against UTEP it needs to be more like 6.5+ ypc.

Sark will likely speak highly about Scotty Walden and the energy he brings to his program, and how this is a "much improved" UTEP program compared to years past. He will also praise their 5 star QB Malachi Nelson for being a spark plug to the UTEP offense. Unfortunately, Sark will likely will not mention C-USA All-Name team Tight End from UTEP Cash Cheeks.

Compare VY as a redshirt sophomore in his second start, and Arch as a Rs SO in his second start.

Arch did better, but the stats have some eerie similarities.

Yes. We will beat the piss out of UTEP. What you said about arch is why I’m down. I saw an offense that’s less talented than we’ve had the last 2 years but able to be overcome with dynamism at QB. If Arch was great and a force multiplier it would overcome Quinn’s weaknesses and we’d be better. That doesn’t look like the case. That’s the problem.

Sure. I thought in year 3 arch would be ready to be really good. If he’s a 1/1 guy you are looking for generational type play. Not perfection right off but more than we are getting now.

Whenever we struggled against teams like rice during Mack we were good, not great teams. That’s driving my concern here. Feels a lot like 2002 type teams.

Yep.

also- whoever quoted Htwown thanks for nothing. He eats paint chips. I didn’t bet this game and bet almost nothing. I also probably have less than 5,000 a year at risk in total bets and finish within 1,000 of break even one way or another as is the case when you make a ton of 25 and 50 bets. I spend way more on vacations, Astros tickets and longhorn travel as far as entertainment goes. The idea that a couple small bets (I didn’t make any so far this year other than my season bet which is still in good shape) would color my perception of this team is as dumb as he is. If anything gambling sharpens looking at all the teams we play with clear eyes and avoiding the fucking idiotic takes from last week like “this teams ceiling is 9-3”. Uh, not it’s not dipshit, teams play other teams and we are better than every team on our schedule right now.
I have one season bet with Doc OU and that’s that we go 10-2 or 11-1 and are favored every game. As I made abundantly clear our schedule sucks and I fully expect to go 10-2 or 11-1 and make the playoffs and probably lose in the quarters or semis when we play a team that takes advantage of us beating ourselves.
I thought this team was going to be national title good. It’s early and we still might get there, but it’s not particularly close right now and won’t get there unless and until arch plays like a 1/1 kind of guy.
