I have a friend who describes herself the same way. While relating a story this friend told me, my wife asked about the friend. I said, “You remember the woman who described herself as a dyke?” Well, our oldest heard this comment, and came in, full of pique.”YOU CAN’T SAY THAT!” I defended my words as coming from my friend’s self description. “SHE CAN SAY THAT, YOU CANNOT!”

Years went by, and the event came up in a conversation between daughter and I. She said she had been overly dramatic, but I was glad to know that the use of that term, by a cis male, offended some people, and I have avoided it since.

I never told my friend about the exchange, nor asked if my words would have offended her. But, I’ll ask you, SS, would you have been offended by my parroting your own words?

Honestly it would depend on how well I knew you and how sure I could be that there wasn't any underlying homophobia in how you used the word.

Just from our interactions over the years on Surly, I'm confident you were just using your friend's own words. But I'm never like... thrilled to hear a straight man use the word regardless of context. And I'm only okay with certain gay men ever using it lmao

I have a lot of lesbian friends and clients, and a few gay friends. I treat all potentially offensive words as off limits unless I'm in the group the slur targets. So I might bitch about the kraut at the office, or make a pollock joke, but I'm not going to fire off a n bomb, fag, Dyke etc.
Why should I require others to decipher if I'm being funny or cruel.
However imo members of groups that are targeted by those words have every right to demystify or destigmatize those words by using them. And they often do so hilariously- see Dave Chappelle with the n-word. A white dude is never making that work, so just leave it alone.

Props to you sir for asking questions and actively trying to be thoughtful.

Using that kind of language in a public forum is retarded.

Everyone knows that.

I'm taking retard back. Not to ever ever use that word to describe a person with an intellectual disability.

turnip is retarded and so are his followers.

Shit.

I do wish there was a word that carried the same gravitas. Dipshit has been my go-to, but that doesn't quite cut it. I don't see this going your way.

I'm being sarcastic.

I've been using mentally deficient.

The state once had an agency called MHMR: Dept of mental health and mental retardation.

It's dshs now.

Truth.be told, I wouldn’t use that word, at all, except in the situation I described, and only with my wife. I had no idea my daughter was in earshot. I’d like to think if my friend heard that tale, she’d laugh. The chance my story would offend her means I won’t share it with her.

My big takeaway from the encounter was the memory it brought back, of my father trying to make the case that the n-word was less race specific than it was a condemnation of low account people. There are trashy people of every race, he said, all of whom deserved the slur. And I was horrified to hear that from him. And greatly embarrassed. My thought was I had similarly horrified, and embarrassed, my daughter. There may be some solace in the notion that racial, and civil, justice rachets forward generation by generation, but I feel shame to have embarrassed my daughter.

Watching Clemson game on ACC Network and keep seeing a commercial for 3-month supply of “survival food” from 4Patriots.com. So there’s that.

This is the guy that comes speeding around from behind when I'm driving my wife's car to curse us out and then sees me in the driver's seat and keeps it moving.

It's Houston man. If you aren't going 95 in the right lane someone feels slighted.

Staged as fuck is one way to go about it.

Very true, but then again the target audience, as noted in the tweet, has an average IQ in the 70s-80s so it just might work.

Not 72 dollars

Looks like what my mom called taco soup, minus the corn. Throw in some jalapeno cornbread and a bottle of ice cold Old Milwaukee Light and you've got a damn meal!

Yup, sub corn for one cut-up potato. Get a bowl ready with a layer of fritos on bottom and cheese sitting on top of the chips, and then dump it all on top.

$72 on two meals worth of chili?  Did he buy USDA Prime tenderloin?

Chuck is $4 per pound.  Brisket is $4 per pound. Bulk chili/garlic/onion powder are cheap.  Beef stock is cheap. Serranos are cheap. Water is cheap.

I mean, I guess it's possible he is making 15lbs of chili and his fat ass kids eat 1 lbs per serving. That might get you to $72.

Yes, chili is just about one of the cheapest beef-based dishes out there.  If he's feeding a crowd then he was always feeding a crowd.  Typical look-at-me right-wing airing of grievances.

Let’s assume a can of diced tomatoes or paste and a can of cannelloni beans assuming this guy isn’t in Texas. Still cheap.

Maybe he uses saffron in his chili and enjoys a little caviar as an amuse bouche.
American carnage indeed.

This could go in a number of threads, but just the weirdness of it makes me want to put it here.

Co-worker's daughter (no pics) was in Amelia Island, FL over the weekend and a drone flew over her with a recording on a speaker saying "Vote For Trump.  Save America."  She flipped it off and then it followed her for a bit.  I'll see if I can get video.
