I don’t think my view and yours are mutually exclusive.  Your analysis is just more in depth and precise.

Both of our perspectives assume most citizens were taught some form of media literacy or good contemporary issues practices but they’ve chosen to deceive themselves into believing they are well informed because it makes them feel better than the alternative, which is reality.

Getting my news from Surly is actually a pretty good spectrum of information. Hugo has been hugely valuable and there are others. The key, as y'all are talking about, is not being a slave to any single source. That and not assuming you know more than you actually do.

I'd be thrilled if we simply decided "how about we not be fucking evil?"

Astonishing, isn't it? Just astonishing.

I used to be very comfortable arguing we were a many faced entity. I'd point to Central America. You have the US government training death squads and teaching torture at the sweetly named School of the Americas while American church groups are in the same countries building hospitals and the Lions Club is handing out eyeglasses.

The balance is shattered by the use of old Walmarts to warehouse foreign children with neither education nor recreation. Did I saw warehouse? I meant imprison. Some of the kids die. Some of 'em get lost in the system. Some of them are permanently emotionally scarred by separation from their mothers.

I didn't vote for it, but it still has my fucking name on it. It makes me murderous.

I had no idea that America having the nerve to elect a black man president would cause that many people to go completely batshit.  I thought it would be no big deal.  I was 100% wrong about that.

A black man named Barrack Hussein Obama, whose father was a Kenyan Marxist

They found out that Jim Nabors was gay during this time as well, which rocked them to their core.

Yep.  At this point, it's kind of hard to argue that anything less than a complete shutdown of the country by resistance doesn't equal complicity.

Good Luck.

At the Portland Timbers season home opener last week, someone showed up in a prominent place in the middle of the stadium waving a 15 ft pole flying the Stars n Stripes and below it a red white and blue Trump 2020 flag.  The booing was so loud, everyone in the 25k seat stadium was aware.  That turned to loud cheers when the person was momentarily greeted and had to lower it and leave.  I was there, and the initial thought I had was if this was planned/promotion or some kind of move to gauge response organized by something more than a solo Trumpkin.  This target deal above makes me think it wasn't in a vacuum.

Considering Oregon has paper ballots and doesn't participate in CrossCheck, it doesn't help Dotard's chances, fwiw.

And if we're about to get heavily pissed on by Trump 2020 campaign, I'm doing a lot more of what I did yesterday:  cleared my schedule and took a hike, literally.

also, what the actual fuck about the "tractors are not hooked up?" that is a sign of a failing mind. he cannot even finish a cogent thought, and rural broadband is a winning fucking issue.

I can't even imagine being a Trump speechwriter and how heavy you hit the bourbon bottle whenever that dumb fuck decides to go off script and ad lib some random stream of idiot mouth garbage.

he's so fucking stupid.  The majority of CA's forest is under federal control.

It's like the manhattan chopper crash this week.  He tweets out that the federal government is standing by to help, because he's so fucking dumb he doesn't know that the NTSB manages crash sites.

even his pokes at biden in his iowa speech tonight seemed extra forced and lame.

It’s almost like he doesn’t know what to do, so he’s playing his greatest hits, only he’s bored with them.

It does have to concern him though.  If people think he’s going to lose, they won’t donate, and they won’t show up.

everything fell absolutely perfectly for trump in 2016, despite all the stupid shit he did.  now he's relying on the same stupid shit like he's some strategic genius, and to most people, it just looks like stupid shit.

Yep.  I was on a trip with the in laws and saw MIL get duped by fake news on facebook no less than two times.  She spouted it out as fact before she had even finished reading the headline.

Had a relative state that 50% of the American population was financially supporting the other 50% of the population through entitlement programs. I gave a funny look while pondering how that could even be a possibility given the federal and state budgets on entitlement programs and the employment percentage of the population.

wat.  he pulled up his mortgage balance and acted like that was his checking account?

Exactly this.  He just quickly flashed the phone and Brad, the asshole of the group, was like 'wow' and leaned in impressed, knowing it seemed way off...

Then he says to everyone out loud - 'that's your mortgage balance, bro'.  It was hysterical.  Full of shit, just like his hero in the WH.

Well, if I remember correctly, FDR, Stalin, and Churchill divided Europe up on a cocktail napkin.  Not saying that was the whole agreement but it does happen.

I disagree.
My hypothesis is that there used to be three types of citizens, generally: 1) well-informed citizens.  These people actually consumed sources like the NYT, read news magazines and the like.  2) Basically informed citizens.  These folks watched Uncle Walter on the CBS evening news, and that's about it.  They had a general feel for what was going on in the nation and abroad, which was presented to them in a relatively even-handed manner.  3) Uninformed citizens.  These folks were out on the farm, stayed out on the farm, and didn't give a shit (alternate version: they worked the assembly line, and didn't give a shit).
Now, we have a huge class that has taken the place of the second and third groups: people who THINK they're well-informed, but aren't.  These folks listen to hours of Fox news, so they MUST be well-informed.  But that's like someone who consumes 8,000 calories a day of McDonald's thinking they're well-fed: they're consuming a lot, sure, but it's actually killing them.  IF they were aware that it's nutritionally bankrupt, that would be one thing.  But they think the OPPOSITE.  They think that by shoveling garbage into their heads, they are well-informed, when the actual OPPOSITE is true.
There's no fixing that.  Our country is one massive Dunning Kruger effect.

To quote Roger Ailes - “These people don’t want to be informed, they want to feel informed.”

He skurred

What everyone is missing is that Trump is only getting in the low 40's against everybody, not just Biden.  That's no coincidence.  That's what he got in 2016 and his numbers never got above that and his unfaves are stuck in the low 50's.  He's not winning this and it won't be close.

My prediction is that sometime between now and the Spring, he decides not to run again.  He'll bitch and moan and blame it on "endless investigations" but in his mind, riding out on top is better that getting totally worked in the general.  He doesn't particularly like being president and he's gotten out of it all he's going to get.

I don’t think so.  His complete lack of self awareness and egomaniacal soul will allow him to convince himself every poll is wrong and his gut is right.

i would LOVE to see him humiliated in the general and then get dragged out kicking and screaming.

And get indicted the next day for felony campaign finance violations? Trump's not quitting.

Re the NPR heart string stories. I've somewhat resigned to the fact that I cannot keep paying attention to the plight of much of the world. That really will ruin your existence. Especially when coupled with the realization that you can't do anything to change it.
I've gone down the rabbit hole in the past on the average daily life in Syria, Yemen,  and various African countries and it takes you to a dark dark place. I had to just accept the fact that the world for the most part is a shitty place and human beings, left unchecked, are power hungry assholes willing to lie, cheat and kill in order to gain power, and in many cases lie, cheat and kill to survive the wrath of the power hungry. Now I just try to keep an eye on geopolitics and try to ignore the pain and suffering of the constituents of the various bad actors.
I'd rather play Risk than watch Schindler's List for the rest of my life.

That’s how I feel listening to BBC Newshour with me, Tim Franks. I know the word is often a terrible place, but there’s not a lot I can do about it.

Texas Standard is often interesting, along with Think and Hidden Brain if I can find the time to listen.

It’s the single best money maker he’s ever had.  He’ll ride it until it crashes into the mountain.

This.

And he can't just keep what he's raised for 2020 if he decides not to run. And he can't donate it to his own charity.  There's a lot of rules and what-have-you's for campaign funds that are leftover.

What makes you think he cares about those rules or can’t find a loophole? It’s what he does.

I’ll be the dissenting opinion that Trump’s presidency ends in resignation, unless he dies, thoughts and prayers.

I can’t forecast how and when it will happen but Trump will run away in the end.  Those bone spurs will start acting up if he’s convinced he can’t win or believes resigning is a victory compared to the alternative.

He *barely* ran above his favorability numbers in 2016 and won because his opponent was so fucking awful and unlikeable.

He's, again, *barely* running even with his favorability/approval numbers (40-42% in head to head polling vs. ~43-44% favorability/approval).

If handcuffs weren't waiting on the other end, I'd agree with you.  I'm still hoping for a Warden Norton ending.

He's not quitting. He's loves being President, it's a giant reality tv show for him. He's making money off of being President, gets his ego stroked at his campaign rallies, no one holds him accountable. He loves this. He keeps pushing the boundaries to working his way to becoming a royal. It won't surprise me at all now that his campaign numbers are being made aware to the public that we don't get in some extended heated skirmish with Iran now.

He's not walking away from power his corruption without a fight.
