Crazy Story about Ohio State website BuckScoop

They were paying a player for inside information, apparently:

https://awfulannouncing.com/ncaa/former-ohio-state-player-kirk-barton-and-infamous-message-board-poster-nevadabuck-fired-and-sued-over-role-in-osu-site.html

Also some context as to how Quinn Ewers got that truck.

It makes me wonder if Immamac and Blacklab are doing this all wrong ...

Kirk Barton - isn’t that @Radical Larry ‘s buddy from the Urban Meyer coaching search?

The same Kirk Barton.  Wonder if he's still as active on twitter as he was during the Urban fiasco.

Also - the most bananas part of that whole Bucknuts Buckeyescoop story is that Barton was using his admin privileges to reset he and his wife's fantasy football team's roster during games so that they would win the league and the prize money.

And regarding the 'paying the player for inside info' - they were just a year too early.  Now you have 9.95'ers that pretend to be journalists entering into business relationships with the players they cover every day.

Weird story that I’ve only followed loosely on The O-Zone. Never heard of BuckScoop before. I’ve known of NevadaBuck for years and he’s a notoriously unreliable source of “insider” information. I’ve never paid him any attention. I don’t know what super secret insider information anyone could buy. Anything worth knowing is going to come out eventually. (Unless it’s info on player injuries to be used by sports bettors, I suppose.)

We’re pretty saturated with Buckeye football coverage. I flip around on Saturday mornings and also listen to the local ESPN Radio affiliate. Mostly I watch Fox Big Noon Kickoff and switch over to the radio during commercial breaks or coverage of games I don’t care about. But I’ll also switch over to the Buckeye Football Fever pregame show on the local ABC affiliate and Kirk Barton was still there this past Saturday. If he’s fired from that job then he’ll be replaced by someone else. “Next man up.”

I’ve never understood the $9.95 crowd. There have been sites that gave free access to exclusive content over holiday weekends in the past and I never saw anything that I thought was worth paying for.

The filing goes on to explain that Stickney and Barton tried to change the billing cycle to 28 days instead of monthly

Dummies. Everyone knows you just have to put a banner across the top of the page stating you would be billed early, and it should hopefully be a one-time deal.

How did he get away with changing the fantasy roster?  People in the leagues I've been in would have noticed it the first time it happened and would have screamed bloody murder.

Don’t worry, you can still get all your info from Zach Smith’s podcast.  He even launches episodes from jail!

My thoughts exactly. Maybe because he was in a league with a bunch of pathetic OSU jocksniffer sycophants.

I would say we are entering unchartered waters when it comes to message boards, but I don't know if it is "unchartered waters" or "uncharted waters." All of this confusion is unsettling. I can't afford not to be proactive in these matters. Ergo, I will be suing everyone on this board. I am going to need you all to post your addresses so I can have you served. Thanks in advance for your cooperation.

This.  Anyone that has ever been within 20 feet of a fantasy player during a game is informed not only of his starters but every single player that his opponent is starting that week. In excruciating detail.  Multiple times.

Dude obviously has money problems will all the shit he was doing.  I wouldn't be surprised to find out he had a massive gambling or drug problem.

Yes. Demoted from local tv. He and his partner Matthew “Matty Ice” Hayes both suck. They’re on daily from noon to 3:00. I don’t listen to that show. I’m sure he’s a decent fellow in real life but it was better when Spielman on Sports ran from noon to 2:00. Back about 20 years ago that would be followed by the Dan Patrick Show and then it would be Herbie and Ian Fitzsimmons during drive time.

I should probably qualify that. My biggest problem is with Matty Ice because he shouts too much and seems to be trying to emulate Stephen A. Smith. I don’t really have a problem with Rothman. It’s just that I don’t have much interest in people who’ve never played for the Buckeyes covering Buckeye sports. At least a meathead like James Laurinaitis can give good insight when he’s talking about football. Not for any other subject, but he knows the game and can provide valuable insight in that regard.

And we don't have much interest in Buckeye fans hanging out on our board, accusing the admin of stealing money from Burnt Ends.

My personal/closer friend is his older brother. We are very tight. Anthony left TV because TV pay sucks even as lead sports anchor. With radio he makes a lot more money because he gets endorsements. And you are correct - he is from Highland Park in Chicago and went to IU. He moved to Columbus about 25 years ago or so. I have no clue what his radio personality is like as I only know him as a friend.

He’s better than Beau Bishop and Mike Ricordati, I’ll give him that. And he used to be partnered with Bobby Carpenter before they moved Carp to the Morning Juice show from 6:00 - 9:00 AM. Not sure why that was. Maybe because of other obligations for Carpenter. But the current noon time show is the first that hasn’t involved a former Buckeye LB since Spielman on Sports which went back to probably 20 years or so ago. Back then it would be followed by the Dan Patrick Show and then Herbie and Co-Host Ian Fitzsimmons during drive time. Dallas Cowboys fans probably know about Ian Fitzsimmons. He’s now on a nationally syndicated show on ESPN Radio alongside Freddie Coleman.

Buckscoop has some really good writers over there.  I hope they aren't tainted by this.

And fwiw, no surprise, Barton was buddies with Zach Smith.

Aren't most of the Buckscoop writers buddies with Zach Smith? I recall most of them defending Zach Smith during his nonsense.

From an outsider's perspective, it seems that site has a bunch of trash.

Urban Meyer is a Buckeye fan too and it kills you that he didn’t take the Texas job. Just saying. But Texas dodged a bullet. Until getting blown out by Arkansas. Now he’s an asshole again who’s going to have a fake health condition and take the USC job.

I can't speak for SurlyB but as someone who was all in on Urban I can state with all sincerity that it doesn't "kill me" that Urban didn't choose Texas.  In fact just the opposite, because he didn't "choose" Texas is the very reason i can easily move on.

Dude didn't think it was a match or had some other reason.  Maybe it had to with his already established ncaa legacy and future and how to reconcile that.  If he flops in NFL no one expected more.  If he flopped at Texas it tarnishes his already legendary college status.  If he weighed the NFL as more upside/less to lose than that tells me where he's at in life.  No thanks.  You always want someone with something left to prove.

This is completely shocking and I for one am greatful that our $9.95ers would never ever stoop to such schenanigans:

I know. Can you imagine if, hypothetically, one of our 9.95 entered into an undisclosed business relationship paying one of the two quarterbacks in the QB competition for content then constantly wrote narratives propping that QB up in a good light and slamming his competitor?

That sort of indecency and fraudulent reporting could never be tolerated here.

We wanted Urban Meyer for the impact the name would have, his recruiting, and maybe the standard he would set for the program. He's clearly past his prime as a gameday coach and innovator. The same thing that made Urban great is killing him, so how well would it have worked out?

After he fails in the NFL, I could see him taking another college job to prove he still has it.

I’ll take him at his word when he says he’s done with college football. He’s already set for life. And I figure at worst he’s got two years in Jacksonville so let’s assume that’s another $24 Million. If he wins two games this year and four games next year, he’ll get a third year. We’ll have to wait and see how he learns and adapts to the pro game. But at least pro coaches get some time off and it’s not a 24/7/365 grind like college coaching is. And his family has a say. So do his doctors. The brain cyst is real.

Since tOSU started playing intercollegiate football in 1890, Urban is the first Buckeye coach to go undefeated against Michigan. For a guy from Ashtabula, OH who got his coaching start at tOSU, whose mentor was Earle Bruce, and who’s always had a framed photo of Woody Hayes hanging on his wall, that’s a big deal. He’s lionized in his home State. Maybe you don’t understand how fundamental the Michigan rivalry is to the identity of Ohio State football. But it’s first and foremost. You know the episode of Seinfeld where George learns to say, “Alright, that’s it for me!” and leave the room right when he makes a good joke? I figure it’s the same dynamic. You leave when you’re on top.

I mean, maybe if Ryan Day goes 8-0 against Michigan then that would change things. At the moment I have some serious doubts about that. And maybe Urban will have the kind of success in the NFL that Pete Carroll has. But I don’t think that the hassles of the transfer portal and now NIL are going to lure him back to the college game. I miss him on Big Noon Kickoff and think Bob Stoops was a downgrade although he was totally accurate when he was critical of tOSU’s defensive scheme. If the NFL doesn’t work out for Urban then he’ll have options other than college coaching. But that 7-0 record against Michigan will always stand.

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Former Ohio State offensive tackle Kirk Barton and his associate Ken Stickney (known online as “Nevadabuck”) used “improper and unauthorized access to Ohio State’s internal football video system” to “[expose] team formations, schemes and personnel changes” on the website the duo co-founded, Buckeye Scoop, per a document obtained by Meet at Midfield through a Freedom of Information Act request.

Barton and Stickney “will not receive Athletics media credentials for the foreseeable future,” Ohio State athletics spokesperson Jerry Emig confirmed in an email sent to Robert Glickman, an arbitrator in the now-concluded legal battle between Barton and Stickney and fellow co-founder Marc Givler – who has since left Buckeye Scoop and launched a separate website, Buckeye Huddle. Barton and Stickney’s actions also led to the revocation of media credentials for colleagues at Buckeye Scoop who were uninvolved in the incident, according to the email.

Sources confirmed to Meet at Midfield on the condition of anonymity that in addition to his banishment from media activities, the former Buckeye was escorted out of a team scrimmage by C.J. Barnett, Ohio State’s director of player personnel, in March 2022. Traditionally, practices and scrimmages are open to all former players to attend upon request, but Barton’s actions have stripped him of the privilege.

Never heard of Meet at Midfield, I definitely don’t care about Nevadabuck, and I’m not sure what significance any of this has.

I don’t know to what extent Kirk Barton is engaged in any shady dealings. What’s the story here? Spin it in the worst way possible for me. Make me care. Are they paid operatives for Michigan? Or Alabama or Georgia or Clemson or Penn State? Make it sound as bad as you can possibly make it sound and tell me why I should care. Because I’m just not seeing it.

I think it’s a successful policy that tOSU lets former players attend practice when other members of the media can’t. That gives them a huge advantage when it comes to their broadcast careers and they can generally be trusted to cover the team fairly and accurately.

You should hear the work of Tyvis Powell covering Ohio high school football. He’s awesome and a rising star. That’s to say nothing of Josh Perry who appears on the local ESPN Radio affiliate, on Stadium TV, and on BTN. He’s someone to keep an eye on. (And he pronounces “gif” correctly.) I could make a long list of former Buckeye athletes working in broadcasting. (But I couldn’t make it on BuckeyePlanet because they only allow one thread for each player or any single individual. Most anal retentive fan message board ever.)

I don’t have an opinion about Kirk Barton. I do have an opinion about Heisman trophy winner Troy Smith and it’s that he should be included in the Heisman House commercials. Is he excluded because of his collapse in the BCS National Championship game? Because his ailment scuttled his pro career and paved the way for Joe Flacco in Baltimore? Because he failed a drug test and got busted for smoking pot? (My money is on that last one but the former reasons didn’t help his case.)
