Jordan Shipley - Texas Athletics Hall of Honor

Featured Replies

He's gonna be out in the hospital hallway, on a moving gurney, catching balls from Colt in no time.

He walked over 10 miles to find help? That's crazy.

There’s no way that’s true or that a ranch out there could even be that big. It sounds like he was alone though and probably had to walk far to find someone or call them to come. Still a pretty insane survival story.

Hell yeah! Let's go Jordan!

I can imagine a scenario where he drove a vehicle out to the area he was doing this work and had to get himself back into said vehicle and go 10 miles or at least some distance for help.

Walking 10 miles. Nah. That’s a 2 hour plus journey at a good clip on a track or concrete not through ranchland with severe burns.

After all the injuries and surgeries he recovered from at Texas, he's used to adversity. If anyone can come back 1000% it's Jordan Shipley, one tough SOB! Prayers for all.

Does anyone have a contact address for Jordan and his wife? I have a good friend who sustained similar burns about 20 years ago and would like to send words of encouragement to both of them. Thx.

awesome to hear that it wasn't as bad as feared.

also, blessed that Jesus happened to be in Burnet at the time

But not quite close enough to stop it altogether.

Anyway, I’ll assume he got himself out of the fire/bobcat and made his way to a truck or atv and drove to help, which is all plenty badass.

If it was a controlled burn as some of you have speculated, that shouldn’t be a solo task. Burst hydro line or I guess fuel line onto hot motor sounds more plausible since he was out there by himself.

He'd just left Chicago. Bound for New Orleans

Ship is a tough guy and will make it, but may need a long time to recover.

Mrs. Brat’s boyfriend from her high school and college days was shot down while piloting his chopper during Vietnam.

Miraculously he survived, but with severe burns over extensive parts of his body, including his legs, arms, back & head. His hair, nose, ears, & lips were burned off, but fortunately he saved his eyes when he held his arm across them. He spent about two years at Brooke Army Hospital recovering - multiple surgeries and lying face down for most of that time.

The surgeons also grew him a new nose by cutting a flap of flesh part way from his good arm and attaching it to his face. His arm had to be strapped in close position for a couple of months so the new strip could grow into place before being separated from the arm. It all worked out successfully, and he recovered enough to remain on active duty and eventually commanded an Army aviation batallion before retiring as a Lieutenant Colonel.

Like Shipley, he was a good athlete in school, so that undoubtedly helped his recovery.

Goods thoughts for Jordan and his family. 🤘🏻❤️🤘🏻

I had a buddy that got burned really badly in a steam blowdown. It took him a really long time before he was at his new normal. Hope it’s not as bad for Shipley.

Had a friend and former coworker have a tar pot/kettle exploded on him while resurfacing his father's driveway. It was literallyright in his face as he was standing over it. It looked very bad, but it's amazing what medical science can do these days. Prayers for a great outcome for Jordan.

I’ve already hit on the religion thing once, but I’ll go back once more to ask genuinely from those that may share the same type of faith as they do- what’s with the fasting, and also why the need to be so specific with the prayer requests?

Faith helps to endure tough things, so they have that going for them.

Man. Horns up for Jordan. I’m with @Pato del Muerto on the religion questions, but the part in that post about needing to play catch with his sons have me battling a huge cedar allergy right now.

The fasting is seen as bringing one closer to God, focusing on God instead of temporal things of earth. Jesus specifically speaks on fasting as an expectation and this is in coordination with prayer. There are several examples in the Old Testament where biblical characters ask for specific things from God. The New Testament encourages Christians to make their “requests” (plural) known to God. Often it’s seen as showing faith that God is active even in the small details.

This.

Praying for the doctors to be awesome.

From my casual observations of my fellow citizens, I would say 90% of us should fast for forty days.

Got it. Appreciate the response.

It's not exclusive to Christianity.

Ramadan is all about fasting.

The Buddha, well he kinda took it to another level.

ArmyBrat, that story sounds like an episode of South Park. That’s wild.

VY probably gets out that way fairly often. Not that surprising.

Hoping for speedy and thorough recovery.

Thankful for the doctors, medics, nurses, helicopter pilots, ranch worker that drove him to the hospital, etc.. God.

Praying for his procedure to provide the best possible outcome. 🤘🏼🤘🏼🙏🙏

Poor guy. Poor wife. Poor kids. Poor parents.
I'm sure there is a lot of love to go around though.

I used to volunteer in a burn unit of a major hospital. He has a long road ahead of him. The heat and smell of a burn unit is overpowering. Infection is his biggest fear now. That coupled with loneliness and depression as a lot of folks visit a burn victim once but seldom return. I wish him to go with grace with God, and speedy recovery.

Huge Horns up for Shipley.

Shipley with 30% burn wrapped in medical gloves would still have the best hands amongst the current WR room.

I imagine that burn care has advanced considerably from the late 1960s (like I posted above about the soldier friend) to the current level available. We thought that treatment was amazingly successful 57 years ago.

Debridement every morning is 10,000x worse than the burn itself. Don’t google if you’re squeamish. Then late afternoon/evening when it starts to scab over again and every time you even think about moving it cracks is a close second to the burn itself pain wise.

Burn pain is bad. Worse than the average person can imagine. Pretty much every person with burns like this also immediately has PTSD. The early surgeries are typically to undo the tourniquet effect of rings of char on limbs and to scrape off dead material. Later come (maybe transfers of muscle first and then) skin grafts. Later may be trying to "unclaw" joints scarred bent and graft again to fill the gap made by straightening them. The fact that Ship could make a Hook'em with his right hand and that there appears to be some healthy skin inside that glove is definitely a positive.

Watched a safety video years ago and remember the guy talking about his burn incident and the recovery he endured was incredible. I'd pray for death before going through that.

oh yah, if fasting is so great then why did he have that belly?

(obviously /s. if anyone remembers from TOS - i took off 130lbs with fasting - i dont do extreme fasting anymore, but still do 64 hour fasts pretty much weekly from dinner sunday to wed lunch.

I hope everything goes as well as it can. That's my sentiment in any dire situation.

I've heard of the burn treatments described by @Magus Ossis, and I think there could be no worse way to learn exactly how much you value living. Wife and kids must be a pretty solid goal for going through such agony day after day.

I'm not a religious man. I think all good wishes are equally valuable and prayers in some way. I would be glad of all that I could get if I were in that bed. I wouldn't be concerned about the context from which they were launched.

Very best wishes to Jordan.

Bobby Burton this morning said he had talked to Bob Shipley last night.

Jordan had to walk roughly a mile and a half after being burned back to his truck, and then go find someone miles away for help.

I've had the usual assortment of injuries like torn ACL, broken bones, etc. but honestly the pain of a burn in a kitchen fire -- just my THUMB -- was the worst. And that was only 2nd degree. I can't imagine walking 1.5 miles with 3rd degree bans, even it they were "just" on his hands.

Are you forgetting the years between Mack Brown and Sark?

Watched a video on it one time in arc flash training and good lord I never wish that upon anyone.

I’d hope that the severity would cause some shock, (and also do nerves burn to the point of non-functionality at some point until they recover?), such that the pain wouldn’t be unbearable until you are undergoing medical treatment and pain management medication is available.

That also seems like a lot of time for bugs to embed in the injuries.

I’d also like to think that his ability to make it to help means that his eyes, lungs, and throat are good.

Yup, a couple years ago I absentmindedly grabbed a hot cast iron skillet handle. It was a split second burn that wasn't even that bad, didn't need treatment or anything. But it hurt all night, and I had to keep my hand submerged in water to stop the persistent stinging pain. Put into perspective how painful burn injuries must be.

Jordan Shipley's punt return against #1 OU in 2008 was one of my favorite memories from college. Hope he recovers well.

Can you faggots shut up about religion for one thread. This is Jordan Shipley, he can have whatever prayers he needs. I’ll get Jobu out to make it more inclusive.
