major layoffs coming, both open and stealth. somewhere between 10 and 20% (14-28k folks globally?) RIF

firing 10+% of your workforce is a great indicator for growth - right?

+

the CEO of a 140k employee company now saying he must approve ALL NEW HIRES

we've all worked at companies where you have seen a version of this. Elon sending it to all employees is just cherry on top lol

I would like to gain a better understanding of our hiring. VPs should send me a list of their department hiring requests once a week.

Think carefully before sending me a request. No one can join Tesla, even as a contractor, until you receive my email approval.

and 100% of the time it's bad.

going on a full hiring freeze to the level your micromanager CEO has to individually approve hires is a great indicator for growth, right?

+

cutting shift time on the Cybertruck production line by 12.5% 5 months in to delivery and with 3 days notice is totally normal, right?

How many of those jobs were going to go away if/when he setup shop in Mexico?

Tesla ended 2023 with just more than 140,000 employees. That means Tesla shipped about 13 vehicles for each employee it had at the end of 2023. General Motors shipped 38 vehicles per employee, while Ford Motor shipped 25.

I’m not trying to get CR, but based on the facts, this doesn’t sound nearly as insane as an ex-president, who is currently under numerous state and federal indictments, and is currently running for president again, having a publicly traded stock ticker with his own fucking initials based on some backwater social media site that has less than 2 million daily active users.

it's almost like the entire stock market valuation model is built on speculation and handwaving, and is completely decoupled from actual underlying value, or something.

As part of the layoffs, Tesla senior vice president Drew Bagliano is said to be leaving the company, Bloomberg reports. Electrek noticed that the Tesla badge has vanished from Baglino’s profile on X (formerly Twitter), as it has from policy chair Rohan Patel. Baglino, who’s been at the company for over 18 years in several roles, is still listed as senior VP in charge of Tesla’s energy and powertrain division on LinkedIn.

Yep.  While there's ALWAYS been a component of "item X has value because enough people say it has value" (tulip bulbs, Star Wars figures, the McRib when it is back for a limited time only, etc.), the bottom line is that the vast majority of things that can be traded have the value they have because of some underlying fundamental utility/aesthetic (yeah, even gold is shiny and pretty).  Things like Tesla, DJT stock, crypto?  They have value -- or a huge chunk of their value, at least -- because some people have decided that it should have value.  Crypto is worth lots because it is hyped as being worth lots.  Tesla is worth lots because of the hype and aura.  DJT stock is worth lots (although much less) because it's about the personality of the brand and the cult behind it.

For such things, almost always, the music eventually stops....and people are left holding it with no chair to sit in.

my uneducated opinion.

  • their base models needed to keep getting cheaper. Make it so it was a dumb financial decision to not buy a Tesla. If a Model 3 could compete with a Honda Civic in price, the game would be over.
  • the truck is beyond stupid and should have never been made. I can't imagine anyone buying it except for those wanting it for their social media content. And those influencers are a mix of Elon fan bois and people who want to hate on the truck.
  • Elon has destroyed the brand. Previously a liberal would overpay for a Tesla because they wanted to be seen as green. Now buying a Tesla is unthinkable for someone who is on the left and somewhat politically active.

Sucks for Austin that a falling company is hq'ed there and isn't the truck made there. I have to guess that Austin will experience much of the layoffs.

This is the most inexplicable part to me.  The other are just sub-optimal business decisions, the sort of thing that happens.

But hyper-politicizing a major consumer product?  I mean, even Michael Jordan observed "Republicans buy shoes too."  Ford and Chevy and BMW and functionally every other auto maker don't tie the image and marketing of their products to a particular (and extreme and polarizing to boot) political ethos.  Sure, there are political identities that identify more with particular products (I'm guessing that more Republicans buy Ford and Chevy trucks, and more dems buy Priuses and Accords), but the manufacturers wisely (well, actually, EASILY, because they don't get in that game to begin with) avoided having their products tied to a politically polarizing position.  Elon....not so much.  AND, he picked the dumbest group to cater to.  Sorry, Elon....incels and blind fanbois aren't going to produce the sales figures you need to succeed.

But less reliable.

With a shitty build.

That rusts in the rain.

And gets stuck accelerating, with no brake function.

And will pinch your fingers off if you close the frunk.

And weighs a ton, so is shitty for off-roading.

And about a hunnert other points of inferiority I'm surely forgetting.

funny you should mention that:

honda ridgeline bed size: 64" with 50" between wheelwells - it's 210.2" long

cybertruck: 66" length with 51" between wheelwells - it's 223.7" long

this is the preproduction truck over the ridgeline

I don't have any idea of the politics of most major CEOs. They're smart enough to stay neutral publicly and usually indicate that they are open to working with any Administration in the WH. The right message is that the company should want anything that is good for America and to stay away from social issues or partisan issues.

my point was that the ridgeline is 210.2" long and 78.6" wide

the cybertruck is 223.7" long and 86" wide. it's bed is 2" longer than the ridgeline

it's about as useful for towing stuff as a mid sized pickup. and it doesn't have a midgate

the cybertruck is a fucking dumb vehicle

I hear the Santa Cruz just isn't a good vehicle (crappy mileage for a small truck), so that's on Hyundai.

I can see people wanting a Ridgline -- it's a "light truck" with Honda quality and reliability.  I don't want one, but can understand people who would.

I can't come up with any reason to want a Cybertruck other than you're a fanboi knobgobbler.  Everything it's supposed to be for/do, other trucks do much, much better, with better safety, reliability, and quality.  Literally the only thing it has going for it is "CUTTING EDGE ELON ZOMG LOOK AT ME IN MY ELON-MOBILE!"

Particularly, if they had narration video/audio of the various surrounding issues and stupidity. I'd visit that museum for sure.

That's fair, just the Fiero fire issues made me put it in there. Seeing those in flames on the side of the road is burned into my memories. I'm willing to trade it for the Aurora or Catera though.
