I think I've been reflective along those same lines [as Anastasis]. I wrote something that invited a flare-up of comment in the Decline of Trump thread. I didn't pursue it out of laziness and awareness that it was the wrong thread. This likely isn't the right one either.

Our record in Latin America alone is a breathtaking excercise in exploitation using just about any means. Our deposing the democratically elected president of Iran to re-install the Shah so we could have our way with local resources in another bloody black mark on this overly self-congratulatory country.

We paint our foreign and war policy as good guys versus bad guys. Simplistic and counter productive. The well-written responses in that other thread pointed to the Pax Americana and the value of American military force in the world since WWII.

I was not making an absolute argument against every action the US has taken. I was just pointing out the large element of our foreign policy which is stupid, brutal, and working in service of the greed now grown almost holy in our culture.

We fumbled the best chance we had in Afghanistan by pulling out the special forces to secure the north of Iraq when Turkey, one of the allegedly threatened neighbors of Iraq refused to participate in the second war of the Bush term.

The invasion of Iraq was a disastrous policy in some ways worse than Viet Nam because at least in the earlier bloody, useless war, we thought we were fighting an actual enemy. At least North Vietnam was communist even though they posed no threat to the US.

Over and over and over again.

Our foreign policy has sucked because we've participated in a bunch of proxy wars that had no direct affect on the US other than making a few individuals rich. The middle east wars were originally about oil, then a vanity project for W who wanted to be a "wartime" president. We have not intervened in many places that could use help because there is nothing for the US to gain, or for any individuals, as there was more money to be made elsewhere.

But this is one of the US's top remaining enemies in this world, who interfered with our elections, and who continues to fund people causing chaos inside and outside or own capital. He has to be dealt with at this point. It's helpful for our fight against Putin that Ukraine has a likeable leader and didn't ask to be attacked. There is surely corruption in Ukraine, but it doesn't mean they should be slaughtered and overtaken by a far more corrupt regime.

There really is no legitimate argument against helping Ukraine, especially since its just money and not American lives. It's literally all about who'se in the White House and being against anything he supports. I read comments to a Biden post just this morning, half of the responses literally saying "We support Russia." Americans, supporting Russia, because the president is a democrat. If Hitler came to power today he'd win all of Europe in a landslide with the help of the US Congress. We don't deserve to be a country anymore, we really don't.

It's always funny when challenging American foreign policy competency and coherence is met by progressives questioning your loyalty to the country and calling you Russia-aligned. You don't get that kind of layered irony from the former Republicans like matt that just manage to pound out "what kinda of brown person are you anyways?" over and over again on their keyboards.

Heres some foreign policy for you

There is good and evil in this world

The US has done some shady shit in its past

The US has also done a lot of good in its past/present

Russia is built on shady shit

Trying to think of good things foreign policy wise Russia has done and I'm drawing a blank

Invading a sovereign nation just because, which is what Russia did, is shady. Targeting civilian's is evil, kid napping children is evil

Why should the good guys stand back and let innocent people die and become enslaved?

What does that say about us if we do?

30,000 dead Ukrainian civilians so far and @Anastasis and the other "libertarians" want us to stop helping them fight back.  What a fucking world.

You know, you don't hear much about AOC anymore.

Was just thinking about all the politicians I hear about are far right and that stuff is constant. On the left I hear about BIDEN BIDEN BIDEN, occasionally a headline about Fetterman, and then?

The AOC boogey-man has seemingly been forgotten.

If Biden drops out due to health reasons and Newsome get's the nod, AOC would be a good running mate with Newsome. No way Dump beats that ticket. Newsome doing good things to combat crime in CA.

She pretty much destroyed her attackers from the right who sought to belittle her. She's no easy target. Total package.

I think Whitmer has a great future.  And honestly I think Newsome has a shot to be president, and AOC can probably, eventually, be whatever the fuck she wants.

But a former San Francisco Mayor, California Socialist, and one of the more progressive women in politics on the same ticket probably isn't drawing in Independants.

Whitmer I hope becomes the first female president.

eventually when the bogeyman never comes, people realize that maybe she was never supposed to.  and gop lawmakers leave her alone because they're scared to death of her dragging them on social media.

i like newsom a lot, but i still worry that fox news has been working way too hard over the past two decades to make sure a californian can't win nationally.  whitmer and shapiro should both be in the mix for a while, as they represent two of the five states that matter every 4 years.

Harris (by virtue of being VP), Whitmer, Shapiro, Scott Kelly, Warnock, Ossoff, Pete, Booker, Beshear, Wes Moore.  Those are your key players in the next 3 or 4 election cycles.

Newsome looks the part, but being from California, it's going to be a huge negative.  I thought about Jared Polis, but I think Pete is a more polished version of "the gay candidate."

Newsome handles the California aspect correctly. When someone says "don't California my Texas" or whatever state, he pushes back that they should be as lucky to be as successful in CA.

And let's be honest, when someone in CA moves to TX, the average IQ probably goes up in both states.

The others are how you get Desantis type candidates.  Newsom will actually be liked by people unless some bad shit comes out about him (which wouldn’t surprise me, as he seems like he could be shady as hell, but assuming the worst thing is the marriage to Kim Gargoyle, then he’s probably ok).

if this is about shapiro and/or whitmer, then you should go watch some of their interviews and speeches.

Agree with the Fox propaganda. It's insane how effective it's been.

Yeah, he makes me nervous with respect to potential skeletons but he's a charming guy and people seem to overlook a LOT of flaws when covered with that veneer. We are stupidly high school when it comes to electing competency and candidates with character.

All Gavin Newsome needs to to do is talk about California having a fuller, thicker, girthier GDP than Texas and attack it head on, and it will erode. People will start talking about CA’s forearms and calling it an economic “beast” for 10 minutes.

I actually like Newsom more than I expected to when I've heard him in interviews and what not, but I do think the liberal elite Californian thing is going to be hard to shake. He'll just get painted as out of touch coming up in private school, dating a celeb, and because of the French Laundry thing during COVID. And to be fair I can see how that strikes a nerve.

Whitmer, Warnock, and Shapiro stand out to me as the fastest rising stars with the brightest futures because of the states they can mobilize.

No Pritzker?

I feel like a Newsome/Warnock ticket or a Whitmer/Kelly ticket would crush it in 2028.

I personally like Beshear.

Pete and AOC might be the two most intelligent, charismatic politicians in the country right now but I feel like they both will have a hard time getting into the POTUS or Vp slot.

I've never had an issue with AOC. She's earnest and with me I'll take that over the fake outrage shit  on which the GOP corners the market.

Katie Porter though, I will follow her white board all over town and back. I love it when someone pulls out receipts. It's like when some guy starts bloviating about how we've won a national championship blah blah blah and then "got Jimbo" blah blah blah and then the actual record on a white board is posted and *crickets*.

Furk.

Yeah, this is fun, but when you realize it doesn't make a god damn bit of difference to half of the country, it loses its panache pretty quickly.

I know. I know. I have the Mark Twain quote memorized but sometimes it's all I have to hold on to. That the idea my parents had that investing in people benefits our society at a greater rate than any other thing we might do in this country. But oh the hate sells it does and that makes for some sleepless nights thinking about all that hate out there.

You are probably correct, but Vis a vis all the ghoulish behavior of the GOP it's like a paper cut vs missing multiple limbs with open sores. It's crazy to even warrant discussing the difference, but as you pointed out, those missteps will be discussed 24-7
