This whole war with Iran thing just shows that no matter how little I think of Trump; no matter how much I think he is a lazy, demented, and corrupt living symbol of everything I hate about the worst parts of the United States; he still somehow manages to disappoint me. I didn't think he would actually do this.

I don't know if expectations exist that are so low he might not let me down.

I may be an outlier but I don't want Iran developing nuclear weapons.  Lots of people are going to die because this isn't being done the right way, but in the end Iran might not have nukes and their repressive government might be replaced.

Iran has the potential to be a successful and increasingly secular society.  Demasculating them wouldn't be all bad.

Almost demasculating them could be really bad.

Ignoring the fact that Iran has supposedly been a few weeks away from making a nuke since 1995 and ignoring the fact we had this agreement with them that was working until Trump just ripped it up for no reason. Ignoring those two factors: Bombing and attacking every country that doesn't have nuclear weapons is going to have every country in the world rushing to get nuclear weapons. Because now Ukraine and Iran look like fools for ever not stocking up on nukes when they had the chance.

Notice that supposedly it was this thing we had to murder everybody for to prevent North Korea from getting nukes. Then North Korea got nukes and suddenly...everybody leaves North Korea alone and everything seems fine.

The lesson Israel, Russia, and the United States is teaching the world is clear: Get nukes.

It was. Until some bastards overthrew their government and put a reactionary monarchy in charge. But maybe if we just overthrow their government a few more times...

And so that changes our approach to Iran, a country that is a threat to Isreal, how?

(I'm not arguing that the US should encourage war.  I'm only arguing that if Isreal ends the threat, there might be some advantages for the region.)

A whole lotta this.

If you were putting on a seminar on "how to function in geopolitics in the mid-21st century: a how-to guide for mid-sized nation-states," an entire chapter would be "if you don't have a nuke....get one."  It wouldn't even need to be a long chapter.  You either have a nuke, which makes you too thorny prey for any predator to really want to eat, or you don't have a nuke, and run the risk of any number of larger, better-armed (often nuclear-armed) states utterly assfucking you.

The 2024 election says otherwise. Not showing up at Trump’s parade doesn’t mean you don’t support Trump. And the No Kings protests were far less diverse than the BLM protests. We still have a LONG way to go.

Quite foolishly.  Iran overplayed the fuck out of its hand.  Plenty of cautionary tales to come out of Iran.  But, one of those tales remains "yeah.....fucking get that nuke, and right soon."

I imagine it didn't help matters.

I am no friend of the tyrannical Iranian regime.

But they did sign an agreement to stay good and followed it. That should have counted for something. It didn't though.

Beyond the fact that it doesn't help matters, it gives Isreal carte blanche to treat Iran as the existential threat it is.

It's not Isreal's agreement.  And I would respect an agreement between Isreal and Iran more than I would anything we were involved with.

On June 12, 2025, IAEA found Iran non-compliant with its nuclear obligations for the first time in 20 years.[165] The IAEA stated that Iran's repeated failure to fully address questions about undeclared nuclear material and activities amounts to non-compliance.[166] It also raised concerns over Iran's enriched uranium stockpile, which could be used for both reactor fuel and nuclear weapons.[166] Iran dismissed the resolution as politically motivated,[166] and declared plans to build a new enrichment site and install advanced centrifuges.[167]

Yes. This has been discussed. They were following the agreement until Captain dipshit tore it up for no reason in his first admin.

I should put it in the "Things that make you surly" thread, but how can anyone in this day and age still misspell 'Israel'?  It's not like the word isn't plastered over every major website 24/7.

I really hope, if we ever get another President, the first thing that person does is rip those flag poles out of the ground in a public ceremony, melt them down and mold them into statues of Obama and Biden and then place them exactly where those flag poles were.  Extra points if Trump is still alive to watch it.

Yeah. Also if we could put him into carbonite, that would be fun too.

Is this a serious question?  There are people out there right now super pissed off about mutant murderous migrants from Mexico who couldn't show you where Mexico is on a world map and it's right fucking next door.

You'll see lots of misspellings from me. I was never a great speller.  And to be honest, I probalby pronounce it "Isry-al" more often than not.

I've also got a condition called central serous retinopathy.   Retina gets some fluid in it and blurs the center of one's vision.  Thankfully it's in one eye.  Unfortunately, it's in my dominate eye.  Kind of had vision issues from childhood.  Most times the condition is acute and goes away but mine's chronic.  You end up looking slightly to one side of the letter you are looking at and see the letter through just a bit of periphery.  It tires your eyes out.

If I'm looking at the word "Israel" on the page, it looks like "Isr  l" or "Is  el".  You can figure out most words by recognizing 60% oi the letters anyway.

I'm spending so much time just making sure my work emails are correct that by the time I get on these boards I'm tuckered out.  I can barely see the little red squiggles that indicate I have a spelling issue.

Anyway, that's one reason I misspell Isreal and other words.  Hey - no red squiggles on Isreal!

Demasculating them so they can serve rich billionaires like they're gearing up for here isn't a way to live either, as Luigi recently brought to light.  As for Israel, they made their bed, and continue to do so.

Trump saying how the are the best flag poles ever means they'll rust and fall over before he leaves office.

They're hollow like everything else he produces, but these poles will be the most expensive flag poles the American taxpayer could've ever hoped to pay for.  And he wants us all to salute this multiple deferring clown sonofabitch on top of it.

I wonder if they'll be gold-plated (painted), like the other tacky shit he's slapped all over the White House.

A good indicator would be all the coins and trinkets (especially the "rump" watch) bearing his image he's hocked.

does the Whitehouse not have a flagpole??

Yes, right on top of the White House, except his will be bigger.  Our president's best skill is the grift, so he sells assets that the taxpayers already owns, but now he directly profits off. Take our national park system for instance--there's no chance they're remaining intact, when they can be sold to mining and timber industries, along with private property, and he can get a cut--after all, it's his idea to sell our assets for the benefit of the taxpayer.  When he says king, he also means everything belongs to him.  He doesn't really care about the ruling part aside from what he can profit from, and that part which keeps him out of jail.

At least we'll have something to remember him by.

I can think of an appropriate way to put those poles to use if this MAGA fever ever breaks.
