My hope -- and I readily admit it's a hope -- is that the Lindsay Grahams of the world are so fucking terrified of Trump that they fall in line despite not agreeing with a lot of what is happening and will be more emboldened to go back to their old conservative ways. They still suck but at least they usually stay within the sacrosanct rules of engagement. We can deal with that. What we can't deal with is Trump and Stephen Miller who do things they're told they can't do because who is going to stop them. I might be whistling past the graveyard for sure but this what I'm hanging my hopes on. I know what we've got now is going to destroy American altogether. Let's at least try something else.

HED: Portuguese president calls Trump Soviet or Russian agent

Quote

President of Portugal Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa made a harsh statement about US President Donald Trump. In his opinion, the American leader is "objectively a Soviet or Russian agent," reports Euronews.

"The supreme leader of the world's largest superpower is objectively a Soviet or Russian asset," said de Sousa on August 27 during a speech in Castelo de Vide.

Trump's efforts to present himself as the main mediator in reconciling Ukraine and Russia did not make a good impression on the Portuguese president. De Sousa noted that Trump's attempts to "settle" the war were not beneficial for Ukraine.

"Objectively, the new US leadership strategically contributed to Russia," he added.

As an example, de Sousa reminded that "every day" there are new threats from the US to impose sanctions on the Kremlin. However, in reality, none of Trump's promises to strengthen sanctions had been fulfilled.

According to the Portuguese leader, Trump tries to play the role of an "arbiter," but at the same time wants to negotiate "only with one side." Kyiv and its European allies are literally forced to pressure Washington to also take part in the negotiations.

De Sousa added that Europe downplayed "the importance of Trump and Trumpism" and also did not believe that the balance of power in the White House and US policy could change so drastically after Trump came to power.

Meanwhile, media write that US President Donald Trump is not satisfied with the demands of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Europe for ending the war. He wants peace at any cost.

In recent days, Trump has expressed in private conversations his frustration that his loud diplomatic efforts have not brought results — but he blames not Russia and Russian President Vladimir Putin.

I've certainly noticed that in almost every interview, "we just have to trust this President" is the favorite line of defense from Republicans.

I agree that this won't end with Trump, but I don't think it can be overstated how much of the current Republican success is directly due to that man and his name.  Quinn Ewers isn't doing photoshoots in "Republican Party" t-shirts.

And the jockeying to become the new head of the party will make the 2016 Democratic primary look tame.  They aren't all going to just sit back and let JD get crowned.

Too many Republicans are just scared of Trump. Once he goes away, it’ll be back to power grabbing and fighting for the party. I’m not saying the stops, but whoever is next in charge is not going to have the same levels of protection and boot, licking that Trump has.

I think one fascinating part of the story should Trump die soon will be what happens with the Epstein case.  I would bet good money those "files" will suddenly be revealed and Trump will be implicated.

FIF accuracy.  Because the shittier he is, the more they love him.  Trump skullfucking a puppy on live TV would get him a 2 point bump among GQP voters, based almost entirely on how horrified everyone else would be - "look how much he's owning tha libz!"

That whore shouldn't be on the cover of any magazine more substantive than "Swank."

Well, it won't be "Juggs" or "Black Tail," that's for sure.  Even with those bolt-ons.

Yeah, and that goes back to votes.  Without Trump's endorsement, they're scared to death they won't get re-elected.

Trump is a really unique phenomenon.

LOL at any of you who really believe that Trump's passing (hello, FBI) improves our situation. He opened the fucking floodgates, and the MAGATs are forming lines from Longview to Morgantown to register as America First dumb fucks in every level of election. I can't even imagine what a state funeral for dotard will look like. I'm expecting nothing less than every government building being required to be gilded in gold in his honor. The cretins in congress and the senate will crawl over one another to name airports, buildings, roads...hell, fucking CITIES after Trump.

It's OVER. Democracy LOST. There are no sensible, grounded "conservatives" or GOP members who want to guide us back to normalcy.

The Dems clutched their pearls and brought a Subway sandwich to a gunfight. The oligarchs behind the GQP have everything they need to perpetuate their vision.

I hope George W Bush rots in hell for not having the balls to use what was left of his voice in 2016 or 2024 to call the old guard Republicans back home & open the eyes to ten or fifteen percent who might have been persuadable.

We're fucked.

This is why I'll take my chances.  With Trump, we will almost surely see a suspended 2028 election and full base support that honestly can't be overcome.  Without him, maybe not.  Probably, but maybe not.

I’m not even going to get my hopes up about Trump dying. Despite his age and the mitochondrial despair on his face, I think we are cursed and he will live another 10 years.

That said, if he did die, I think it could only be considered a good thing. It’s akin to Saban leaving Bama, where the worst case scenario is that DeBoer continues to be an effective coach, but the best case scenario is that Bama loses momentum and becomes much less formidable.

Maybe Vance would continue to carry the party, but there’s also that chance that he won’t fire up the MAGA crazy to the same degree, and he won’t be as vindictive and threatening towards members of his own party, so they will be less afraid of him and less unified.

Oh, don't get me wrong.  I think that Trump lives to be 105, in the White House as president-for-life (a new position the Clarence Thomas-led SCOTUS finds in between lines of text in the Constitution), spewing insane bullshit and doing evil all the while.

Because that's exactly how this timeline goes.

Lowering prices was like half his fucking campaign. In fact he promised to do it on day one.

In retrospect, he should have promised to end everything bad in the world on day one. Famine, diseases, all gone. He would have picked up more votes, and his voters don't hold it against him when it doesn't happen. Like when he didn't release the Epstein files because he didn't want to be outed as a child rapist.

Somehow being a child rapist isn’t disqualifying anymore.  Trump is in the Epstein files, everyone knows it.

HED: Portuguese president calls Trump Soviet or Russian agent

I was happy to see this, especially as someone with interests in Portugal. Portugal's far-right Chega party made substantial gains in the election earlier this spring, and has forced the governing center-right PSD to move further to the right. President de Sousa has consistently vetoed bills coming from the far right and sent them off to the Constitutional Court. It is heartening to hear him take a stand here as many larger and more powerful European states are still pussyfooting around the obvious. As an American I have always been treated extremely well in Portugal, and Portugal has a live-and-let-live culture that makes this a very unusual statement. Força o presidente de Sousa!

The vast percentage of his idiot supporters don't seem to know it. Even though my dog can follow the logic train there.

"Well yeah they were friends for about 15 years and they hung out all the time and yeah Trump was told he's in the files.... but why won't he release them?? Must be covering for Bill Clinton and Tom Hanks."

Have you not seen the statements from MAGAland?  They have already pre-excused him.

See, actually, fucking underage girls is alpha-male stuff.  Being attracted to sexy 14 year olds is natural, and a sign of male virility.

You think I'm kidding.  I'm not.  That is exactly the narrative they already packaged.

I got hammered by a few people when I suggested this would happen, about three months ago. "No no Red Five, that's a line that even the dotardarians won't cross!".

While the comparisons of the US to Nazism and fascism are valid, I would suggest America as Rome is deeper and more valid.

-- Of course, many historians and scholars have noted the parallels for decades.

Watching the US Open Tennis Tourney on ESPN shows Americans boozing it up and partying down ... just like at the all the college and NFL Games coming soon. 1000s of TV channels and streaming sources, millions of videos online, billions of tweets and updates, theme parks galore. Advertisements utterly detached from the reality of what's going down.

It's all endless spectacle as the empire enters it final stage ... with Corporate America, Academic America, the Legacy Media, and 100s of millions in America in near complete denial.

America is Rome in collapse and the following dark age and medievalism will be brutal and bloody ...

The 21st Century barbarians will overrun the country.

-- concentration camps will out number theme parks.

-- in fact, some theme parks might well be converted into "Love America Re-education Camps."

-- Observatories (like UT's McDonald Observatory) converted into God in the Stars Search Centers. Or maybe some MAGAs will just take an AK 47 to the mirrors.

-- witch hunts looking for scientists who believe in vaccines, televised and streaming as reality TV shows.

-- mass arrests and show trials, televised and streaming as law enforcement dramas

-- public executions and stonings

-- purging of faculty and "woke" educators.

-- giant crosses will be mandated on all state capitals and corporate HQs.

-- forced church attendance

-- this list is endless.... feel free to add more.

If I had my druthers on which day Trump falls over and dies, my top 2 choices in order are:

Christmas day 2025

Good Friday 2026.

Xmas day wins out due to being earlier, but Good Friday would provide an amazing social media frenzy for about 48 hours.
