With everything else going on in the world, sometimes I almost forget that the republican party is protecting child sex predators. Just out in the open. And apparently it just doesn't matter at all. If there was a Trump vs. Harris redo next week, Trump would probably win again.

Several pages back, there was talk of removing the filibuster... Trump is now saying remove the filibuster.

We're done. There will be no more votes after this November.

what does "grocery" mean?
I remember seeing that word in my 19th century English Lit class, but can't quite recall its meaning.

Good question. That was a word I was not familiar with until November of 2024. It apparently refers to items that you would purchase at HEB. Like, say, apples or eggs or bread. I'm not sure what we used to call it before the stable genius introduced the word into the lexicon, but I've called it "groceries" ever since.

Removing the filibuster goes back to 2011 and the democrats. This isn’t the first time the nuclear option will have been used and we are still having elections.

According to Trump it means different things in a bag.  I now call anything that goes in a bag groceries

I had a job offer from Electric Boat, so I went to Groton to talk with various managers, etc.  Calling Groton a shithole would be an insults to shitholes everywhere.  Yikes.  Hard pass.

My wife’s uncle works in the industry there and they live in Mystic. I find that area quite charming. Easy train rides into NYC and Boston. That region is on our list of escape plans.

Yeah, get just a little ways out of the city/industrial areas, it's kinda nice.  Not sure it's cheap, though.

It is not legit.  Philadelphia Naval Shipyard was closed in 1996 and has been being redeveloped since that time.

I'm pretty sure the Philadelphia Naval Shipyard got teleported to Newport News in 1943.  It was some World War II experiment, I guess to spread out heavy industry across the Atlantic Seaboard.  I'm pretty sure it was called the Move A Shipyard To Newport News To Impress Churchill Experiment.

And a great aquarium. We always stopped there on our way from DC to Boston.

Almost exactly a month ago, I wrote an article for theverge.com pointing out that the T1 Phone 8002 (gold version) — a.k.a. the Trump phone — had missed its promised release date. Now here I am again, because the phone still hasn’t come out.

In case you’ve forgotten, the T1 is a very gold mid-range Android phone that was announced in June alongside a $47 Trump Mobile wireless plan. The Trump Organization promised an August launch in its press release, but said September on its website. An unnamed spokesperson later told USA Today that the launch had been delayed to October.

Quote

It’s now the end of October, and Trump Mobile has gone suspiciously quiet — it hasn’t even posted on social media since August 28th, shortly after it tweeted (and deleted) a badly edited image of a Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra, passing it off as the T1.

In fairness, for months now, the store page has only promised an arrival “later this year,” a change made at the same time Trump Mobile stopped claiming the T1 would be made in America. That gives the company two more months to release it and still pretend it’s on time.

Trump Mobile never responded to my request last month for an update on the phone’s release date, and it hasn’t replied to my latest email either. People of lesser faith might worry that this phone is no more than vaporware, but I refuse to give up. Place your bets now on whether I’ll be back here in another month’s time, still asking: where is the Trump phone?

The Washington Post published an unironically self-aware article today and was fittingly called out by one of their former columnists who departed due to the Post's fascist-remake and business downturn

if you want to read the article https://www.washingtonpost.com/entertainment/2025/10/31/kennedy-center-sales/

Of course ticket sales have bottomed out.  Cletus and Lerlene aren't lining up to buy tickets to La Boheme (it's an opera).

Didn't want to CR the Wives Stupid Shit thread, but my wife voted No on California Prop 50 (temporary redistricting to counter Texas gerrymandering). She doesn't like Trump and wants to see him gone, but doesn't want to pay the price for redistricting. Told her sometimes it takes sacrifice for democracy, but nope, she's pretty stubborn.

After President Donald Trump took over the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in February, he and the executive he put in charge repeatedly accused the institution’s former leadership of not doing the very thing they are responsible for: selling tickets.

White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said: “The Kennedy Center learned the hard way that if you go woke, you will go broke. President Trump and the members of his newly-appointed board are devoted to rebuilding the Kennedy Center into a thriving and highly respected institution...

It's cheap for the state.

It's not cheap for each individual county. CA has 58 counties.

FISCAL EFFECTS

Minor One-Time Costs to County and State Elections Officials. Counties run elections, and the state oversees them. Because most congressional districts in California would change at least some under the new maps, county and state elections officials would need to update election materials. This would result in one-time costs to counties of up to a few million dollars statewide and one-time costs to the state of roughly $200,000. The state amount is much less than one-tenth of 1 percent (0.1 percent) of the state’s roughly $220 billion General Fund budget. (The General Fund is the account the state uses to pay for most public services, including education, health care, and prisons.)

My point was, the typical patron of the Kennedy Center prior to the Trump takeover now wants nothing to do with his bastardized version of it.  And the MAGA base doesn't fit the profile of a Kennedy Center attendee.

"costs to counties of up to a few million dollars statewide"

Doesn't the "statewide" qualifier mean that it will be a few million dollars statewide? Honest question.

Otherwise, we're talking about 70-200 million to "update election materials?

The very first words -- before "Costs" -- are "MINOR ONE-TIME". So, yes, his wife is a fucking moron which is what he said before he started defending her.
