The Austin rally kinda felt like a picnic.  There were folks up front listening to the speaker but a lot of people were just hanging out under the trees.  Lots of folks complementing each others's t-shirts and signs.

DPS looks like they relented and are allowing folks to march down Congress, but the reporter was told the cops want everyone out by 8pm. I'm not sure how regular folks are supposed to know that.

From what we could tell while we were there, from about 5 to 7, DPS seemed pretty chill. Hope it stays that way.

Great turnout. Very peaceful. Very respectful and patriotic. LOTS of older folks out representin'. Made me proud. It was a good day. Far better than what I expected. I hope it'll be a good night, too.

The reporter I'm watching said that 20,000 showed up at the Capitol.

That sounds about right imho. Probably more imho, but that's a pretty good ballpark figure.

Thanks for showing up and showing out.

Hey, never had to do it when I was younger. Figured it was my civic duty now that things have gone to shit. It was very encouraging.

from the wiki:

It was played at a campaign rally for Donald Trump. Fogerty found this to be "confounding"[19] and later issued a cease and desist order, noting that Trump obtained a draft deferment.[20]

They played the CCR version of "Fortunate Son" at the induction of my son's company into the Army at the end of basic training. This was in early fall, 2021, at Fort Jackson, SC, so after January 6. It was one of several other songs they played while some units were standing at rest waiting for other units to straggle in from their final overnight training exercise. I got the impression that it was a purposeful choice, with a full awareness of the class ramifications in the lyrics, and it made me appreciate the willingness of the fort's command to allow it to be played.

I get the impression that this is a bit of a different matter. Wondering why it's an awful knockoff instrumental and whether anyone in the administration had the good sense to vet the musical choice. As a matter of optimism, I'm going to see it as a possible small act of rebellion, maybe even messaging, among military brass who have their patriotism in the right place.

That's exactly how I'm viewing it.

It's hard to follow the rules, but this is exactly the kind of courageous Surly patriotism that we need to see in these difficult times. Well done, @wood. Surly commends you.

We were among those hanging out under the trees. Tried to stay out of the way, but that never works. Folks kept finding us and so our protest turned into any other public event. A lot of yammering.

Still, the best of reasons to show up in public. No mask.

As I was being pulled over on the way home, I wondered for a moment if it was protest related. A black cop stepped up, and I relaxed. Expired sticker. Cop called it a fix it ticket.

Decided to get a little exercise and employ my constitutional right to yell "fuck trump" a couple of times, so I strolled down to the capital from my place in Hyde Park. Aint gonna lie, I was a bit warm standing in that sun, so I bailed after an hour and headed back stopping in at Scholz's for a pop and to catch the end of the US open, and then again at the Crown because, well its the Crown. Not a bad Saturday.

Guy was handing these out, but mine got a little fucked up in my pocket.

I love this community.

Went to both rallies/marches in Seattle - most of the suburbs also had one, including the one Rick Steves was at above. The one at the UW had a couple thousand (it was commencement today as well, so a bit more challenging to get to). The main march had 70,000 estimated; it filled the entire 2 mile route from end to end. Many, many others lined the streets and rooftops and leaned out windows cheering and banging pots.  No damage, no hassle, nothing at all went awry. No cops at all visible at the UW; downtown there were none along the route as they were a block to either side keeping the cross streets closed. Trains ran every couple of minutes all day to get people in and out.

Great day, made greater by all the posts from fellow Surlyites from cities and towns far and near, big and small.

We were thinking we were going to Tukwila, but then weren't needed, and then hit the march late coming out of the Westlake station.  Just step right out of the train station into a political march.  Great march.  In these dark political times, it's cathartic to have something that feels like a celebration with people who aren't horrible.  But Tukwila went sidewise, so a bittersweet day.  The sense of community these marches create is so important.  But the fuckers still are running shit.
