I would have walked out.

Gave it some thought, didn't act immediately, and that was probably good. Fairly certain it wouldn't be very effective compared to other approaches, which I'm thinking about a lot right now.

Grown son (but young and in military) said he would have said something. Good that he wasn't there. We're going to need him and other thoughtful, moral and upright leaders in the military if stuff keeps moving in the current direction, but he'd probably not be in that position if he draws attention to any of his political statements.

Yes, whenever I question anything I will look to the Democrats for some good old fashioned truthiness.

Folks speaking from experience it will take awhile. I remember when I finally understood WMD was completely total bullshit. It kinda rocked my world that government would lie to me so blatantly.

why anyone would lionize a podcaster is fucking beyond me, much less that one. gross

Because it lets them play into their collective perpetual victim complex. One of theirs was killed in a horrific manner, and they all feel bad about it, and want to do the one thing right-wingers all agree on universally: grift and profit off their fans and supporters for the most money possible.

My wife had to preach today. It was really fucking hard, she wrestled with her sermon from the beginning, and come Wednesday, it got even harder.
Let’s just say she didn’t go the same direction as your priest.
She also didn’t go anywhere near “it’s good that he’s dead.”
She spoke to bodily autonomy. And how your life, and physical body and existence are a gift from god. And who are we - or anyone - to take away that autonomy, up to and including by ending a life? But don’t think it’s limited to that. Limiting bodily autonomy is a particular problem in these times.
Quite a few people thanked her after, and there were some pretty strong emotions.
Anyway, preparing and giving that sermon was one of the hardest things she’s ever done, and she left it all on the field. I’m in awe of her, and her ability and courage to listen to the spirit when called, even and especially when it’s hard.
It sounds like she's got a supportive congregation, or at least one that will give her some leeway.

I'm sure she's well aware of that though. We should all be so lucky.

I didn’t realize that she actively preached. I always got the impression that she was more involved in pastoral counseling than preaching. As a disaffected churchgoer, I’m curious what denomination she preaches in if you’re comfortable sharing that info.

She was not so sure. At all. She was quite aware of, and anxious about, the risk that the message she was sharing would not be well received.
She agonized about it with me the last several nights, always ending up at “this may go terribly, but I can’t NOT say it.” And all I could tell her was “if that’s what you feel called to share, then I have your back no matter what.” Walking up to a pulpit to share a message that may result in you getting run out of the room is a pretty unnerving thing.
Who knows, there may have been some people who are upset and angered by it, and she’ll hear about it later.
But there were, thankfully, quite a few who found it meaningful and were supportive. It’s a good congregation.

She preaches several times a year at a church where she is associated. Not formally on staff, but formally associated with it (it’s a particular kind of thing, not found everywhere).

I’ll share her particulars via PM.

Charlie Kirk also said people died in the Kerr County flooding 4th of July due to DEI:
https://cbsaustin.com/news/local/right-wing-podcaster-blames-austin-fire-chief-and-dei-for-flood-deaths-amidst-union-vote
“How many people unnecessarily died because of DEI? Those families are without their daughters. But, hey, you have a Black fire chief in Austin.”
Dude has always been a POS pushing and profiting off of hate.

Man, I completely forgot about this comment. One month later, he’s dead.

How does one arrive at "I am okay with people like Charlie Kirk and Nick Fuentes being influential to my kids as long as the party does XYZ". I am being honest when I say I do not understand it. I feel like I would want that gross ideology as far away from my family as I can get it.

I’m the definition of generic white guy, a moniker that my wife has bestowed upon me with affection, and I also don’t get it. It’s just a lack of humanity to me.

Shit, I feel MORE confident when I see a black person in a position of responsibility/authority…because you know their ass had to not only meet the requirements, but also overcome bullshit at every crucial point in their career while being careful to not piss off the bigots.

Either that or they had to do their best impression of Steven from Django Unchained. You can’t tell me that David Clarke met any sort of meaningful requirements other than “appeal to racists, morons and conspiracy nuts.”

This will never be forgotten. Ted Cruz can carry this now that he is whitewashing things on this.

In the video, the young woman was loud and was cheering Kirk’s death. Any assault she may have committed was not filmed. This quote from the article made me question your source’s grip on reality:

Quote

Kirk, the founder of Turning Point USA, was a tireless champion for American values, free speech, and Judeo-Christian principles, often facing fierce opposition from radical leftists on college campuses.

Just so I am clear, American values and Judeo-Christian principles are anti-racist.

JD Vance... there isn't a moral bone in his body. His performative acts, like rushing to carry Kirks casket, are pathetic. I've never seen anyone, flip flop and sell his soul quicker, than him getting on the Trump grift train, after all that shit he had said about the man.

And now he's desperately trying to use Kirks death to raise his abysmal approval ratings. The whole act is embarrassing.

Vance has no moral compass. His animating force is grievance and resentment, borne from anger and shame about his early station in life. He’s spent his entire life trying to join the “elites,” all the while inventing mostly imaginary slights at their hands at every step of the way as motivation.  This is despite a pretty clear record of being welcomed by the elites with open arms.

And he is the best example of the primal motivation of the American reactionary right: the demand that the libs and minorities they shit on like them.

Maybe an odd comparison but he reminds me of the MJ we saw in the Netflix series. Here’s a guy who received nothing but universal accolades once he made the varsity basketball team and yet he invented fictitious insults to motivate him. He was incandescent with rage at the idea of the opposing team trying to win a basketball game and considered it a personal affront. And it really did motivate him to be the best ever but it also gets you things like his truly unhinged HOF acceptance speech; unable to appreciate what he’d accomplished.

JD Vance is like that except establishing eternal authoritarianism instead of a basketball dynasty.

He (the vp) is an interesting dude for sure. Interesting is doing a lot of heavy lifting for me here.

Your quote, "the demand that the libs and minorities they shit on like them," reminds me of this talk that Ed Norton's character had with Renner's in the Bourne Legacy but in a convoluted rationalized way:

The Bourne Legacy Photo with Jeremy Renner and Edward Norton

"We are the sin eaters. It means that we take the moral excrement we find in this equation and we bury it down deep inside of us, so that the rest of our case can stay pure. That is the job. We are morally indefensible, and absolutely necessary."

That to me is why stoking the fear of the history of rebellion by the oppressed in our past is so successful, ergo: I am the victim here. Look at all that I have put up with from you people and yet you don't like me?

it's wild to me in 2025 that anyone can look at the platforms of the two major parties in this country and go, yeah, samesies. is it abortion? is that the singular issue that clouds the rest? you have a problem with terminating pregnancy early but are cool with kids getting raped once they're born? i'll probably never understand it

Well, Trump made that real easy.  I don't have to go samesies to figure out for whom to vote.

The person who wrote that obviously doesn’t know the Pope and the catholic people are anti-American, Trump haters, communists and I’m sure other stuff is just waiting to break on their crimes.

Not trying to start a fight here, but Catholics are responsible for a lot of what's going on here.  From the dumbass Opus Dei types, to Leonard Leo, to some intellectuals like Patrick Deneen and Adrian Vandermeule.

This is a must listen to understand where some of the alt-right policies are coming from https://freakonomics.com/podcast/has-america-lost-its-appetite-for-the-common-good/.  There are actual underpinnings to this shit that aren't 100% bigotry.  It's far too subtle for most of the right wing voters.

Also, for someone who holds these views and is pretty influential, this is a great demonstration of civil discourse.  He manages to avoid outrageous statements, acknowledges when things may be controversial, and things of that nature.

Also, he has refused almost all media/interview requests, notably not Freakonomics, and is a bit perturbed at how the WSJ recently wrote about him.

It's not an accident that these common-gooders are Catholic and working from Catholic universities.

Where did the idea of him wearing body armor come from?  Seems to me if he was such a good guy, he wouldn’t have people trying to shoot at him.

Well, us lefties are vewwy vewwy dangerous.

Not that he will display it but Vance must be giddy at the idea that he has a murdered Charlie Kirk to springboard his 2028 candidacy. He can’t outwardly run but this gives him cover to slowly move himself in the spotlight.

i wish the more left leaning WH reporters would bait Trump more by asking him about Vance’s actions. They could easily manipulate Trump into shutting Vance down.

From where, the church across the street? They've been exiled from the building AFAIK.

“President Trump again called for unity while also blaming the violent left for Kirk’s murder and saying George Soros should be put in jail.” - someone on Morning Joe this morning, offered without any further comments.
