The date was removed from that screen cap but it was from 2009. In his 12+ years of podcasting and having a presence on the internet there has to be a lot worse. The Patriot Takes account begs for donations after every post, no way they can't hire someone better to do some digging.

why? seems like they're doing a fine job digging things up.

The good, he's a proponent of nuclear power instead of natural gas as a backup for renewables. At least in Texas.

Same as my thermodynamics professor at Texas. Cool.

I didn't listen to the previous guy so I donno about all this criticism he's throwing at him, saying he's like big tobacco or something. He's pretty pissed at economists wading into the waters and putting their estimates into the global warming discussion.

In 2100 we will be 5 deg F hotter according to the models this dude believes in. I guess that's a better long-term speculation that won't be wrong as quick as Al Gore's predictions.

Good listen overall, he's got an annoying voice but he hates Abbot so that's funny.

As should anyone be. Economists are not jacks of all trades as some fantasize. When they talk about the death penalty, global warming, abortion, creationism/evolution et al, they’re doing so as laymen and the title of “economist” in those discussions is as useless as an asshole on an elbow.

I got pretty far, but I'm throwing in the towel. At 1:54 after talking about how complex and awesome and intensively managed agriculture is (I guess an aggy requirement), now he's gone into the big summation slide of choices? A slide that shows his 5 degrees of warming. 10 degrees of cooling would put us into an ice age, so potentially we are halfway into a warming ice age.

He doesn't know what that would mean, but how could he look at his kids and tell them that they are going to live in a half of ice age of warming.. MAD MAX..

Fucking aggy logic is out of control

What the commie cloakers won't acknowledge is he gave him the opportunity to speak. Agree or disagree he's willing to talk to people and let them express their views. That's unacceptable for most here.

Everyone has the opportunity to speak whenever they want about whatever they want. Fucking go for it. Not everyone deserves a platform of 11 million people to spread their bullshit completely unchallenged. How is this such a difficult concept to grasp for you morons?

Joe Rogan doesn't need to be the gatekeeper of who does, but don't be fucking surprised at the pushback when he gives time to the Alex Jones's of the world.

Those are Democrats

Who at the time were the conservative right-wing party waving the Confederate flag. The parties have traded places since the Democrats passed the Civil Right Act and Voting Rights Act and now the Republicans are that party. Did you not know that? Because it’s kind of embarrassing for you if you didn’t know that. If you did know that then what you said was pointless and irrelevant and just plain dumb.

I'm not much of a Rogan fan, but don't hate him, either.

Imo, give this shit a rest (trying to cancel Rogan). This is not the battle worth fighting. Neil Young and the other 60's era musicians can take their music and their tens of dollars in royalties and do whatever they want.

Rogan can have whatever idiots on his show that he wants. Again, "progressives" need to stop getting so butt-hurt over this.

And that's actually a really good argument. The Kardashian's obviously don't "deserve" elenty billion viewers, but people want to watch what people want to watch. Joe Rogan isn't an arbiter of truth, and he never claimed to be. All he cares about is filling slots and trying to create entertainment...and I'm sure that it's not lost on him that controversy is usually good for business. There's an audience for what he sells, so good for him.

He can have on whomever he wants, whether they deserve it or not; I just laugh at the indignation of his fans when more extreme guests naturally garner more extreme reactions and "consequences."

I disagree that he's concerned about what is entertaining and revenue generating. That's where a lot of people get lost in the sauce. In the past, less so now, he delved deep into psychedelics and marijuana and comedy to filter out what is real. 'Truth' is an elusive absolute. I think he strongly promotes what is 'Real' - real experiences, real conversations, practical policies.

False self-serving agendas stink. And lately to some, it seems like he as dropped the ball in that area. He's been loyal to friends and gotten defensive about some of his missteps. But in a lot of other ways he has stood up for what is his understanding of what is not bullshit. That is what has generated his initial fan base.

I don't have Spotify. In the past I would consume clips on Youtube. If the series of clips were good enough, I might occasionally listen to whole podcast. Mostly I like the experiences of other comedians and stories of travelers and creators. He is now practically completely off of Youtube in regards to new content. But I have seen enough to know that most of the people on this thread have no idea what they are speaking about  but that it fits their twitter timeline or message board narrative.

Bold move on your part entering the chat to tell us how susceptible you are to the idiot narratives. You must be a little dim. a lot uninformed, or a mix of both.

That clip just proves what we've all been saying about Rogan as a dunce and misinformation specialist because never was any substance to that Adele story or the massively exaggerated dumb articles that stirred up a controversy that never existed. The trans community did not collectively slam Adele for being proud of being a woman, but Joe was quickly triggered by his transphobia to use a non-story as a jumping off point for him to bash the trans community.

Here's a very good explanation:

Yeah, that's not right. They're killing new music in total streaming today

  • In fact, record labels—once a source of innovation in consumer products—don’t spend any money on research and development to revitalize their business, although every other industry looks to innovation for growth and consumer excitement.
  • Record stores are caught up in the same time warp. In an earlier era, they aggressively marketed new music, but now they make more money from vinyl reissues and used LPs.
  • Radio stations are contributing to the stagnation, putting fewer new songs into their rotation, or—judging by the offerings on my satellite-radio lineup—completely ignoring new music in favor of old hits.
  • The leading area of investment in the music business is old songs. Investment firms are getting into bidding wars to buy publishing catalogs from aging rock and pop stars.

Yeah, the music industry doesn’t know what to do with itself. So they are streaming old music catalogs and butt fucking artist into ‘360’ deals where the want a cut of all of their NIL and live performances.

But I’m not sure Joni Mitchell is in that paradigm, and as fantastically voluminous and innovative (at times) I’m not sure how much he appeals to the under 30 crowd.

But yes, old music is harder and harder to replicate because you can’t long term afford band members and digital shortcuts are the path of least resistance.

Warner, I believe, was the one major label that supported their artists boycott.

When a new song overcomes these obstacles and actually becomes a hit, the risk of copyright lawsuits is greater than ever before. The risks have increased enormously since the “Blurred Lines” jury decision of 2015, and the result is that additional cash gets transferred from today’s musicians to old (or deceased) artists.

I think this is a major problem. Over the last 70 years practically every genre of music has been explored and run dry. There's only 7 notes and 12 tones over a couple of octaves to play with in non dissonant music people want to listen to and no when you make something new it's hard right differentiate from 70 years of copyrighted work.

The law needs to open this up now. Allow exact songs for copyright but no longer just the melodies and note/chord progressions

FYI...the term used by the South African in Lethal Weapon 2 was "Kaffir lover," which I didn't understand when I saw the movie.

The Afrikaans term Kaffir-boetie (Kaffir brother) was also often used to describe a white person who fraternised with or sympathized with the cause of the black community. This would be analogous to "negro lover" and similar expressions used by white racists in English-speaking countries.

Rough times for subscription service businesses with stock prices but also some data/info now that there is some distance from the Joe Rogan controversy for Spotify.

Spotify’s Joe Rogan problem might not be a problem at all. The streaming giant reported a 15% increase in premium subscribers year-over-year, reaching 182 million globally by the end of March, despite continued controversy over Rogan’s podcast. Earlier this year, artists like Neil Young and Joni Mitchell left Spotify in response to Rogan’s spread of vaccine misinformation, and members got hashtags like #SpotifyDeleted trending on Twitter. These protests don’t appear to have hurt Spotify—overall active monthly users also rose to 422 million up from 406 million in late 2021.

Rogan later apologized, but said he gained 2 million new subscribers as a result of the controversy around his podcast.

Spotify noted that they slightly missed subscriber estimates due to its suspension of services in Russia after the start of the war in Ukraine.

After releasing its first quarter report, Spotify’s stock price fell to an all-time low despite its positive subscriber growth. Analysts at companies like Citi and JPMorgan said they were concerned about operating losses and gross margins for the next quarter.

On the October 11 edition of his Spotify podcast, host Joe Rogan and former U.S. Rep. Tulsi Gabbard (D-HI) promoted the online hoax that students are using litter boxes in school restrooms, with Rogan claiming that one school “had to install a litter box in the girls' room because there is a girl who's a furry, who identifies as an animal.” Rogan and Gabbard framed the fabricated story as “bananas” and “absolutely insane,” respectively, and used the hoax to attack President Joe Biden’s administration.

Rogan was seemingly referencing the persistent but baseless hoax that schools are placing litter boxes in bathrooms to accommodate students who self-identify as cats. The litter box hoax has been wielded as an anti-trans cudgel by prominent right-wing figures including Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) and Chaya Raichik , who runs the viral anti-LGBTQ hate account Libs of TikTok. According to PolitiFact, “School districts in Iowa, Michigan and Nebraska have debunked claims that they are providing litter boxes in bathrooms.”

Notably, the litter box hoax has been used by other conservative politicians and anti-trans advocates to fuel the right-wing assault on trans youth and the institutions that aim to support them.

During the episode, Rogan introduced the hoax as an anecdote from his “friend” whose wife “works at a school that had to install a litter box in the girls room because there is a girl who's a furry.” Rogan claimed that the child’s mother “badgered” the school into putting a litter box in the public bathroom.

Gabbard did not question the bogus anecdote, saying that Rogan's fabricated story was “absolutely insane."
