I talked to some UT hydrologists out in West Texas. They have been doing soil moisture readings all across Texas for about 50 years. They said that, within about 35 years, Austin's going to look a lot like San Angelo does now.

Yup, even many in the O&G industry are basically admitting we're driving climate change now. It's incredibly depressing.

Must be hiding all those new steel plants behind the tool shed out back.

Hoo-boy.  That's a whopper.

Nah.  Those new steel plants are being used to make materials for the "invisible" planes the DOD is rolling out.  If you can't see the planes you can't see the parts, obviously.  Duh!

The oil companies admitted that the science is settled in federal court--humans and fossil fuels have driven climate change. They had a whole presentation on it earlier this year. There is no real scientific debate on this issue.

Some pro-Trump, anti-GOP propaganda which was posted to a Republican board:

Quote

A VERY INTERESTING VIEWPOINT AND ONE I WHOLEHEARTEDLY AGREE IF WE WANT AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!
I am now in my 80's.
Recently, I received a questionnaire and A request for money from the Republican Party.
I strongly agree with every position, as I have since Obama was first elected.
Unfortunately the one statement that was missing is: What have the Republicans done for the American people?...
We gave you a majority in the House and Senate and you never listened to us once.
Now you want our money, my money, more money.
You should be more concerned about our votes, not our money.
You are the establishment, which means all you want is to save your jobs and line your pockets.
Well guess what? It's not going to happen.
So far, Trump hasn't asked for a dime.
You might think we are fools, because you feel Trump is on a self-destruct course, but look beyond Washington, and listen to the masses.
Nobody has achieved what he has, especially in the state of New York .
Here's why I want Trump:
Yes, he's a bit of an ass; yes, he's an egomaniac, but I don't care.
The country is a mess because politicians suck.
The Republican Party is two-faced and gutless, and illegals are everywhere.
I want it all fixed!
I don't care that Trump is crude.
I don't care that he insults people.
I don't care that he has changed positions.
I don't care that he's been married three times.
I don't care that he fights with Megan Kelly and Rosie O’Donnell.
I don't care that he doesn't know the name of some Muslim terrorist.
Our country has become weak, and is tethering on bankrupt.
Our enemies are making fun of us.
We are being invaded by illegals who are raising our taxes which will keep many middle class taxpayers from being able to send their children to college to get educated so they are not on entitlements and can make America great again.
We are becoming a nation of victims where every Tom, Ricardo and Hassid is a special group with special rights
to a point where we don't even recognize the country we were born and raised in, "and I just want it fixed."
And Trump is the only guy who seems to understand what We the People want and need.
I'm sick of politicians, sick of the Democratic Socialist of America, sick of the Republican Party, and sick of illegals.
I just want everything fixed.
Trump may not be a saint, but he doesn't have lobbyist money controlling him; he doesn't have political correctness restraining him; all you know is that he has been very successful; a good negotiator; he has built a lot of things; and, he's also not a politician.
He says he'll fix it.
I believe him because he is too much of an egotist to be proven wrong or looked at and called a liar.
I don't care if the guy has bad hair.
You are welcome to pass this on, or not.
Thought for the Day: "No country can sustain, in idleness,
more than a small percentage of its numbers. The great majority must labor at something productive!"
P. S. No borders, No Language, No culture = No Country!!!

Obviously this particular approach is just straight up racism.  "Every Tom, Ricardo and Hassid"; "...and illegals are everywhere" [how do you recognize an illegal?]; " we don't even recognize the country we were born and raised in".

I'll grant Anastasis this much -- it's hardly a pure function of the executive.  "Stasis" (LOL) actually does tend to limit wild swings.  It would be nice to have a little of that right now.

Unfortunately the prefix "Ana" demands the opposite.

There's been no real debate in the realm of science for a long time. The only "debate" is in the political realm where Republicans in America, funded by the fossil fuel industry, perpetuate their science denial.

What could Jeff Flake ever do to earn your respect?

I’m disappointed in Flake for not taking his one man rhetorical crusade far enough but I know he still has a card or two left to play.

If Trump is ever going to be removed from office, it will take people like Jeff Flake to do it.

This collective Jeff Flake hating doesn’t send a good message to his colleagues that are on the fence about standing up to Trump.

If we were smart, we would applaud any Republican that takes a stand against the administration, rhetorical or otherwise.  But we’re not smart.  We’re fucking stupid and will attack republicans that speak out against Trump because they’re in front of us and not doing what we think they should do.

Hugo, the disconnect here is it seems that this is all a game to you. You enjoy the political gamesmanship going on, the Russia angle, pumping up "woke" Republicans, trolling of Republicans, etc.

The rest of us are sick of all of this shit. No more half measures.  Fuck all of these Republicans and Democrats talking tough while sitting on their hands. Anyone "on the fence" at this point can fuck right off.  We will applaud ACTION, not rhetoric.

Has there been one in the history of human civilization? How would you define a "fiscal conservative?" Bill Clinton balanced the budget. He even left a budget surplus. If that wasn't fiscally conservative then at least it was fiscally responsible, more so than Reagan or any Republican since then.

The debate going on with Ana is pointless.  Krugman (a moron) wrote an article a while back that I scoffed at when I first read it.  He claimed that debt doesn't matter.  I'm starting to agree with him.  The only thing that matters (and I really don't know how much) is the debt to gdp ratio.  The political argument about enslaving our grandchildren to debt rings pretty hollow to me.  Specifically, if GDP is growing faster than the debt, then maybe the gross number is irrelevant.  We, as a country, are never going to pay back our outstanding debt.  I was shocked to look back and see how many years of surplus we had since WW2 (half of the years took place at the end of Clinton's presidency).  Arguing about what to do, how to do it, and which party is more responsible for our 'problem' seems pretty pointless.

This, of course, all falls apart if we are no longer the reserve currency of the world....and Dotard's actions threaten that status.  Especially since he's picking a fight with that Country.

By 2023, it is likely that the interest on the debt will exceed the military spending.  Good luck on keeping the debt/GDP ratio at a reasonable level.

It's the 19-month hate, straight outta Orwell.

Within the book, the purpose of the Two Minutes Hate is said to satisfy the citizens' subdued feelings of angst and hatred from leading such a wretched, controlled existence. By re-directing these subconscious feelings away from the Oceanian government and toward external enemies (which may not even exist), the Party minimizes subversive thought and behaviour.

Sounds about right.

I don’t love Flake but I’m a realist when it comes to his situation.  I get it, you hate him because he won’t do exactly what you want him to do and that’s fine.  However, he is a REPUBLICAN.

If you’re going to take this stance with Flake, why aren’t you upset with the democrats not screaming from every rooftop about this administration?

Their silence is deafening but I know why their quiet.  The same reason as Flake, they’re playing politics instead of doing what is morally and justifiably right.

He's an AMERICAN and he needs to start acting like one, not just talking like one.

Actually, it's pretty much all the GOP, and not energy companies. (Oil companies at least. Maybe coal are still deniers)

Not that oil companies don't take some of what they're gifted.

I don't really care too much about Flake one way or the other, but, I don't think his voting record really has to do much with Trump.  Most of what Congress has passed is because Congressional Republicans wanted to pass it.  It's not like Trump came in with some framework for tax reform and health care which he rammed through Congress. Tariffs, muslim country bans, zero-tolerance immigration, EPA gutting, etc. are all executive order shit which hasn't gone before Congress.  Flake's voting record should criticized for implementing the Republican agenda, which sounds fine in a 30-second TV ad, but is horrible governance.  I can criticize him for being a Republican, and still appreciate that he is willing to criticize our idiot President.

You're not wrong, but that's just a different way of saying that he'll tolerate Trump to get his policy preferences enacted.  That's the excuse of every Republican collaborator.   And it's his choice.  He could choose to say that stopping Trump is more important than passing R policy and use his power to thwart Trump.  With McCain on his death bed, Flake is the difference in the Senate between a 50-49 majority for the Rs and an effective 50-49 majority for the Dems.   He could hold up judges and prevent Trump from getting any legislative wins to hang his name on.

I don't expect him to sacrifice his policy and judicial preferences to stop Trump, but he also shouldn't be praised as someone who opposes Trump if he's not going to do that.

How is Trump's continued defense of his son (and attack on the DOJ) and the Russian meeting, not more obstruction of justice?  Imagine if you worked at a company in the HR group, and were asked to investigate the CEO's son, who worked at the company, and was accused of some infraction.  Then the CEO emails the entire company that his son is innocent and the investigation should stop.   do you continue the investigation and effectively end your career, or declare the son innocent of all charges.
