Texas Recruiting Notes 2022 - Idiotic Slapfights Unrelated To 2022 Recruiting

Recommended Posts

I was a nervous wreck from start to finish. And that includes while being up 28-7. I had that sense of dread every fan who's watched this rivalry for over 50 years knows too well. And sure enough...we played just badly enough to lose.

I'll certainly give OU credit for making the plays, but I can also find plenty of blame for our side not making them. Our D against any QB not named Caleb Williams was horrific. Yes, Williams looked like a teenage Cam Newton-Tom Brady hybrid, but still.

I'm encouraged by CTJ's report of recruits at the game having had a great time, and I hope they saw attractive opportunities to play for us. At this moment, hope is about all I really have.

Gerry Hamilton: Massive recruiting weekend on deck for the Texas Longhorns

Quote

This weekend will be a massive recruiting opportunity for the Texas Longhorns. This is the weekend that has been in the plans for weeks, and it includes hosting the most important recruit on the board. On3’s No. 1 2023 prospect Arch Manning (New Orleans Isidore Newman) will make a return trip to Austin for the first time since June. Along with Manning, there will be 14 prospects ranked in the On300 in 2022 and Top 100 in 2023.

Texas Longhorns official visitors

S Jacoby Mathews, Ponchatoula (Ponchatoula, LA) – tentative
On300 ranking: No. 42

The one-time LSU verbal made a June official to Texas A&M, and a return trip in late July. LSU is also still very much in the mix. There was a big push by Aggies commits with Mathews after the massive win over Alabama Saturday.

DL Quency Wiggins, Madison Prep (Baton Rouge, LA)
On300 ranking: No. 55

The 4-star from the Pelican State made an official to Florida last weekend. Alabama and LSU are the other two schools the 6-foot-6, 270-pounder with an 85-inch wingspan is planning to visit.

IOL Earnest Greene, St John Bosco (Bellflower, CA)
On300 ranking: No. 131

Greene has made official visits to Ohio State and Georgia. USC will hang around the rim on the peripheral. Clemson could receive an official.

OL Malik Agbo, Todd Beamer (Federal Way, WA)

The 6-foot-5, 320-pound right tackle made June officials to Miami and Oklahoma. After Texas this weekend, he has Auburn on November 13 and Florida on November 27. Arizona State could replace one of the SEC schools in November.

S Larry Turner-Gooden, Bishop Alemany (Mission Hills, CA)

The one-time Arizona State verbal has made an official visit to Penn State (September 18), and has Arizona State as a possibility the first weekend in November. USC remains a possibility if the Trojans push.

Unofficial visits by top targets

WR Evan Stewart, Liberty (Frisco, TX) – tentative
On300 ranking: No. 4

CB Denver Harris, North Shore (Galena Park, TX)
On300 ranking: No. 12

I think he was referring to these parts of ousux’s post::

“The gooner reciever stepped out of bounds on his ownthen came back to make the catch and keep the scoring drive alive..otherwise it's a punt. Can't believe the stupid fucking zebras didnt review Williams fumble that we recovered, he didnt get the throw off at all. Exact same scenario is routinely called a fumble in games across the country..we even had it go against us in the arky game.”

Correct. Not about holding, could give a damn about the holding. I don’t know why we couldn’t challenge both of those plays. Supposedly we have a staff the size of bamas yet we don’t have 20 GA’s and a few video specialists watching every angle and saying challenge?

Seriously I hate that we lost but yesterday was neither humiliating or a choke job.

Idk about "humiliating" but it was a choke, no matter how much you spin it. blOU is not some juggernaut we should be impressed to only lose by one touchdown to, both West Virginia and KSU lost to them by narrower margins.

IT Scoop

Spoiler

ARCH MANNING

After going 11-of-11 passing, with six touchdowns, the five-star made easy work on Friday night. The On3 No. 1 overall for 2023 was an absolute joy to watch. At 6-foot-4, 215-220, Manning already looks like a college quarterback. He also thinks like one.

"(Fisher) was dropping eight all night," said Manning. "The short stuff and the run game was there. We had a good week of practice. Just going in and executing the game plan. I thought coach (Nelson) Stewart did a great job and glad we got the win."

The pain of being knocked out of the playoffs last season still lingers around the Newman squad.

"Our team has really good chemistry this year," said Manning. "We're focusing on executing and being more consistent. Last year, I was a little more inconsistent. We just have to stay on top of things and control what we control."

Manning has seen a few places over the last month, including Alabama a week ago.

"It was awesome," said Manning. "Alabama is a machine. Tuscaloosa is a good place to be and coach Saban runs a really good program. There's really nothing you can say bad about it. I like what Bill O'Brien is doing. They have athletes and they get the ball to their playmakers and put up points."

He tripped to see the Georgia Bulldogs last month and found positives in Athens.

"I speak with coach Monken and coach Smart and they are all really good guys," Manning said. "They are good this year. Excited to keep watching them. They'll make a run this year for sure. My parents are good friends with coach Matt Luke and we talk to him as well. He's a good guy."

Manning is returning to Austin this weekend for the UT-Oklahoma State contest. It's his second trip to the ATX after visiting in early June. You can tell he's eager to see Texas play in person.

"(Texas) has been playing really well lately," said Manning. "At TCU, they relied on Bijan (Robinson) a lot, because he's a stud. Playing really well on offense and I'm excited to get back to Austin. My tight end, Will Randle, is coming with me so it should be a good time."

When the name Sark is mentioned, you see a twinkle in Arch’s eye.

“(Sark) is a laid back guy, which I really like,” said Manning. “He’s not always pitching me. He just checks in and that’s one thing I like about him. When it is football, he’s a genius.”

As for a timeline for a decision, Arch is carefully picking his words and keeping an open mind.

"I think after every visit, I'll have a good idea," said Manning. "But I don't really want to rush it so I'm enjoying playing football right now."

When catching up with Newman head coach Nelson Stewart, he told IT what Steve Sarkisian said to him earlier this summer.

"When I was speaking with Sark, he said something that really resonated with me and Arch," said Stewart. "He told me, 'even if I don't sign Arch, I get to say I spent a day with him at camp and got to coach the future star.' That really showed his authenticity and how much he values relationships.“

Texas and Sarkisian have been utterly tremendous in this pursuit. In what will be one of the most hyped recruitments in college history, Sark and his staff are doing exactly what the Mannings need and want; building the relationship, demonstrating the offense in real time, and showing them the vision that Arch Manning belongs at UT.

RECRUITS REACT POST-OU

Often after big, heartbreaking defeats, fans can feel jaded about recruiting. This is your yearly reminder that players and prospects don't view wins and losses like fans. UT's targets have a certain expectation this season for on-the-field performance, and the Horns are showing out on offense. Saturday's 55-48 loss to Oklahoma probably didn't hurt recruiting all that much. Guys like Evan Stewart see Xavier Worthy doing otherworldly things and instantly imagine themselves in that position. So unlike fans and alums, the prospects usually take away positives despite the soul-crushing loss to burnt orange nation.

OL Connor Robertson, Westlake (Austin, TX) (TEXAS) - 2022:

“Game was great environment. I was very pleased with the way that Texas played, especially early in the game. I think just a few simple things that could be fixed easily that probably come with a first year staff. Overall, the game was awesome. It was a tough loss but I think Texas will bounce back. Big game this week.”

S BJ Allen, Aledo (Aledo, TX) (TEXAS) - 2022:

“It was great the environment was crazy. All the emotions stood out to me and the 90,000-thousand something people. And I thought the state championship in AT&T Stadium was lit.”

WR Ashton Cozart, Marcus (Flower Mound, TX) - 2023:

“So hard to put into words. I feel like I've rewritten this five times. Maybe a once in a lifetime game to witness. The energy and adrenaline I was feeling, I just wanted to play. I wanted to be in that moment like I could actually see myself doing it. The experience was kind of personal because I have got to know receivers from both teams. I like (Joshua) Moore at UT. He took time over the summer to hang out and to give me some advice and was good to see him score twice. (Marvin) Mims at OU is my guy. I was especially happy for him because I know how deserving he is for those big moments. He did what he does and I couldn’t be happier. (Xavier) Worthy, I was just amazed at his abilities. I saw both coaches put on an amazing show offensively and my eyes are wide open right now.”

CB Malik Muhammad, South Oak Cliff (Dallas, TX) - 2023

“The game was insane. For a minute I thought Texas had them, but Oklahoma made the quarterback switch, and ended up coming out with the win!”

DB Jayvon Thomas, South Oak Cliff (Dallas, TX) - 2023

“Special teams win games! Texas lost momentum from fumbling on special teams. It was a crazy atmosphere. Fans were going wild!”

WR Braylon James, Del Valle (Del Valle, TX) - 2023:

“It was a crazy experience man. Texas is getting a lot better and that’s so comforting to see. I can see them being a top dog in college football these next three years. That’s a team with some serious potential.”

Hoops recruiting

The Longhorns will host On3 Top 40 small forward/wing Dillon Mitchell (Montverde Academy, Fla.) this weekend on an official visit. Florida State and Tennessee have been considered the top competition for the 6-foot-7 skilled wing prospect.

The Texas staff has placed an emphasis on size and skill at the wing position in the 2022 class. That means the staff needs to win out for either Mitchell, or Top 25 Jordan Walsh (Link Year Prep via Dallas). Walsh is a battle with Memphis and Arkansas barring a Kansas late run. Memphis having an NBA coaching staff, and the NIL deals in place with Emoni Bates and Jalen Duren are potentially a difference maker.

The Longhorns would love to sign 5-star CG Cason Wallace (Richardson High, Texas), but that recruitment has continued to trend to Kentucky over the Longhorns.

The staff feels like the majority of the 2021-22 team will be back for a second season. There is a strong likelihood Texas returns two of the three bigs, if not all three. Some of the backcourt is also expected to return. The staff is not in a big hurry to fill spots, as Beard desires to stay experienced and see what options will be in the portal market after the season. The Longhorns are definitely playing the long game in this recruiting cycle, and will do so annually.

TEAM

As you can imagine, sources weren’t too excited to talk after the game on Saturday so we didn’t get a whole lot. The coaches weren’t very talkative postgame, either. Coaches did reiterate a common theme of needing to close teams out. That has been a concern since they arrived on the heels of Texas playing in far too many close games in recent years.

Two key points we’ll be paying attention to today is what Steve Sarkisian says about wide receiver Jordan Whittington and EDGE Jacoby Jones. Both of those guys could miss time, and each would be a loss, especially with a rested Oklahoma State coming to town.

This week we’ll be monitoring any new defensive rotations. In a meritocratic environment we’d see some guys get benched on defense, or at least see their snaps halved.

We’ll cover practice a bit more closely this week. Saturday sucked but they have to put it behind them and scratch out a victory in front of a packed house this weekend.

So again, I ask: what do you get out of this?  Do you get enjoyment out of this shit?  Does constantly playing Debbie Downer and misrepresenting statistics turn you on?  I just don't understand how someone can have 10,000 posts about something that they so obviously love to hate.

That's how OU wins... its been their MO for many years now... they just get by, they "barely" win... but they do win.  It doesn't matter who they are playing.

If blOU with Caleb Williams at the helm goes on to crush the rest of their schedule to a similar degree, I'll gladly acknowledge you're correct. But I don't see that happening. What I saw in the second half from our defense IMO qualifies as a collapse, and the notion that we should just accept it as a fait accompli because of the skill/talent gap between our squads is a pretty transparent post-hoc justification.

We just lost to our most hated rival for the fourth fucking time in a row, in a game where we had a 96.7% chance of winning in the 3rd quarter. If your takeaway is that it's OK because we were mudholing them in the first half, that's your takeaway and it's fine. But to me that's just another 'moral victory'-type justification.

Teams will gameplan for Caleb in ways that we didn't have the luxury of doing. Caleb actually made bad reads on his downfield throws. He had guys running wide open but he just tossed it up to a covered guy and we failed to make a play. 3rd and 19? Steps up in the pocket and throws a hail mary off one foot to a covered receiver. Perfect throw, but terrible read. Our guy doesn't find the ball or even leverage the receiver much. That play at that moment probably turned the momentum for good. The ensuing fumble on KR just sealed it. Individual failures at big moments.

Williams will come down to earth and play like a FRESH. Especially as these teams get a look at his film.

I see them rolling with Spencer until he fucks up again and change things up. Sucks for us because if Williams isn't there we likely blow OU out for the first time in forever.

Honestly man, it’s not even that your points are wrong or bad, I agree with you that it was a collapse, it’s that you post so much more whenever something bad happens, it’s obnoxious. We all saw the same game you saw, we all know it fucking sucked. Some people just choose to look on the bright side anyway because unlike you, most of us don’t like being miserable all the time.

Leave it to this pedantic bitch to reference the CCG in 2018 as the 1st of 4 in a row, but not point out that we won the RRS in 2018. FFS man, spreading hate and discontent seems to be your life goal.

  • closetojumping changed the title to Texas Recruiting Notes 2022 - Oh No! We Suck Again!

Ou has 4-5 players in their front 7 that are going to get drafted or find their way on an NFL roster.  Caleb Kelly (former 5 star), Nic Bonnito (basically he’s having a Joesph Ossai type year), Ronnie Perkins, Perrin Winfrey, and Isaiah Thomas.  We’re not going to see that level of talent the rest of the year.  With that said, we can’t keep whiffing on elite OL talent.  It has to stop.  We’ve hired apparently the best OL coach in college football yet he seems to be struggling to recruit here as well.  I don’t know what it’s going to take to turn it around outside of transfers.

Back in the Vince and Colt days we used to spot teams (Ok State, Texas Tech) huge leads then come back and win. Sucks to be on the other side of it, especially against dust bowl U.  I'm hopeful that we stop f'n around andpaid fat joe GIF by BET Hip Hop Awards start buying offensive tackles like the big boys. There is a reason they get the NFL contracts they do. Without them any QB can look bad. Any team can look bad.
