Texas GOP Chair Allen West announced his resignation Friday morning and said he is considering running for another office, potentially one that is statewide.

During a news conference here, West said a statewide run is "one of the things that I have to go to the Lord in prayer." He said it would be "very disingenuous with so many people that have asked me to consider something" to not explore a run.

"Many men from Georgia, many men from Tennessee, came here to serve the great state of Texas, and so we're gonna consider it," said West, who grew up in Georgia. He added that he was announcing his resignation, effective next month, so that there is no conflict of interest as he weighs his next political move.

West, who has been most frequently discussed as a potential challenger to Gov. Greg Abbott, declined to say whether he was eyeing any particular statewide office, though he told a radio host earlier Friday morning that the host was "safe" to assume West was mulling a gubernatorial run.

West said he would not be deterred by an incumbent having the endorsement of former President Donald Trump. Trump has already backed Abbott and Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick for reelection.

"You know, I don't serve President Trump. I serve God, country and Texas, "West said.

He was a Florida rep as recently as 2013. Since when does Texas take cast-offs from other states?

It’s not just California hippies and tech bros that are moving to Texas.

Tangential:  it’s hilarious you guys fucked yourself out of 2 congressional seats by not actively promoting the census. nice work, Greg.

Feels like with Abbott nabbing Trump's endorsement, Abbott or somebody decided they to move against West, since West had been shitting on Republicans he didn't like.

A friend mentioned that a bunch of them saw West as a huge headache heading into the primaries next year.  He made it sound like West didn't understand that the TRC works for Texas Republicans, rather than Texas Republicans working for West.

Fraid said West's time was numbered after he and Sid Miller showed up to protest at the Governor's Mansion last fall.

Dude.... you know the routine.  Move to Texas, put on a cowboy hat, use a bunch of lazy-ass phrases like "Texas tough," bag on anything left of mussolini as "SOCIALISM," brag about the amount of Trump jizz dripping down your chin, enjoy electoral success.

It's not complicated.  We're a stupid, stupid state.

This is a good thing, and it means he’s on the outs with the power brokers.  He will lose whatever statewide race he decides on, and then he will either go back to media grifting or try to run in another state.  Either way we need him out of Texas.  He’s been getting the crazies riled up with some pretty insane nonsense even by typical pro-Trump standards.

What you presume is that the power brokers hold more sway than the crazies do.

That's a dangerous presumption.

And yet Gavin is sending back money to the taxpayers, rent relief, etc.

The Texas Republicans are hoarding it in the Rainy Day Fund and telling Texans to fuck off.

The crazies may have more votes in a public primary election, but it's the power brokers who elect the TRP chair, and it sounds like West was going to be ousted, which would be embarrassing as shit for him.  Hell, he's here in Texas because he couldn't beat a Democrat in Florida.

He also no longer has an actual statewide platform to use against Abbott and the others he doesn't like.

I have honestly never come across another human from another state who has EVER been jealous of California state government leadership.  That would be like a Fortune 500 CEO being jealous of Mr. Kruger from Seinfeld.

But make not mistake....you're still eating a shit sandwich.

Since the 1830s?

But it wasn't as if a bunch of button-down respectable three-piece-suit types were gonna sneak up on Santa Anna in Let's Take a Nap Bayou.

But hey, when you want to win the game, you need a couple of thugs on the team.

Anyway, probably the whole country, and therefore also the cast-offs, has just gone from lean and mean, to bloated and pissy. Texas is getting shit because everybody's producing shit.

Shit, I was gonna correct you and say some Comanche chief, but they weren't here much longer than the Spanish, if at all. The Texas tribes that were here in the olden days pretty much were killed by diseases before European contact, spread via other tribes through trade networks. Or are now believed to be extinct like the Karankawa. Some historians believe the Caddo were once as powerful as the Cherokee but by the time the Spanish got here they were already wrecked.

Back to the Comanche, it's fascinating how fast they went from literal bug-eaters to the terror of the plains. They used to be the bitches of the Utes and the Shoshones up in the Rockies, and then some Spaniards left them a little string of horses, and then....

I imagine that occasionally, he must have conversations with the other far right lunatics in this state about BLM, racism, reparations, etc... I also imagine that those conversations must peg the "unintentionally funny" scale  at about an  11.

Not sure if serious.

West would be an idiot to run for Governor. The idea that the Texas GOP base would vote for a black man over Abbott, who can parrot Trump’s endorsement, is laughable.

He’s going to run at the democratic rep where he lives. Probably got ousted by the power players.

Wish he would just move on to Arizona or somewhere instead

Good theory. West comes across as wanting national attention not state attention.  Beating Abbott is a huge uphill battle. Finding a retiring or weak  gop congressman would be an easier path to DC and daily interviews on CNN or Fox.

Maybe his plan is to tell the Texas GQP that Abbott is actually beto in disguise and trump has secretly endorsed West and any video to the contrary is fake news?

Hey it could work.

My 79 yo mom's favorite candidate in the 2016 GOP primary was Ben Carson, so I guess it's plausible. She took a kind of perverse pleasure in voicing her support for him.

Last week when I was driving her around for doctors' appointments, she asked "Is your golden boy, Bay...Bayt...Baytoo, gonna run for governor?"

Don't be surprised if elderly evangelical TX GOP voters pick the craziest of the bunch, even if he happens to be (or in fact because he is) a Black man.
