We didn't lose our DC.  I'm not saying PK won't take Akina's input, but I'd be surprised if there were significant changes just because that's what Akina prefers.

PK has already made several significant changes as staff have come and go. It’s one of his strengths. The defense this year will probably be a blend of things, but that’s already a departure from our defense the last couple years.

I believe an informed poster here said that Joseph was the one that pushed the two-high looks we majored in Sark’s first three years. We already started getting away from that last year but I think it’s an indicator that we’ll see pretty big changes with our defensive pass game coordinator exiting.

Congrats on providing an excellent - and reasonably short - example of Surlyism in practice. Derkaesque, but far more succinct. Well done.

You have already given that exchange more thought than I have. Your welcome?

I'm almost convinced UF threw the game last year in Austin. Hideous on both sides of the ball. Least prepared or inspired team we faced all season.

They were flat out embarrassed. Which certainly means we'll see a different UF this year. They certainly have it circled as the #1 most important game on their schedule. Even more so if Texas goes in #1. And it's not like we don't know we're every teams Super Bowl.

I don't think Texas goes in lacking focusness, but every team plays better at home than on the road. When that plane lands in Gainesville, our players better have veins full of piss and vinegar.

This is just wrong. The Cocktail Party is the most important game on their schedule for a bunch of reasons. We're just a "standard" really big home game.

Doering was talking about the Texas game in an interview on OffCampus on XM 84 a week or so ago. He said that the game last year was the low point in the season and an embarrassment to the Florida program. Napier heard about it from the admin before they got back on the plane and he heard about it from anyone who would see him until they went on their win streak. They've been pointing at this game from the end of bowl season and this is apparently the hottest ticket in Gainesville since Doering or anyone else can remember.

Yup, no disrespect to the Horns, but you guys might be 4-5th  Gawga, Miami, FSU, 10rc.  I hope you guys get our best shot, hope it's a raucous affair, experience the Swamp when it's rocking.

Don't make a shit if Lagway's hurt again.

If he plays, it should be a very good game. If not, Gators will be roadkill again.

You think Texas is Florida’s biggest game? Okie dokie.

Would Texas make Florida fan’s top 5 most hated opponents this season? The competition is fierce. LSU, Miami, Georgia, Tennessee, and Florida State.

Did you think aTm was our biggest game last year? Arkansas? Even Oklahoma? Were those games more important than GA, GA, Clemson, ASU or Ohio State?

rivalries are great, but let’s not pretend beating a crippled Florida State is as big a game as potentially #1 coming into your house in a conference matchup.

There is a reason they brought in Akina. They want to run more man to man. They have very good CB’s, and as Saban himself said about a year ago, championship teams must be able to regularly line ip and play man.

FSU will suck again so they don't have to get up for that one. Miami won't have Ward.

I don't know about most hated, but I'm sure it's the game they want to win the most. And Texas just joining the SEC put us near the top of every SEC teams hate list. And it's certainly not like the ref's are going to do us any favors either.

Will be interesting to see what defense PK runs. I know Texas wants to run more man, but not sure this is the game for that. Nobody is better at WR than OSU in the country. Defense should be nasty, but OSU WRs vs Texas CBs is the biggest OSU advantage on paper. I would expect OSU to try to run the ball and have a heavy dose of screens and draws to help the young QB out. Running man can also help a young QB (Quinn Ewers says hello to Saban). PK isnt a usually a big risk taker. I could see him going the route of mixing a lot of coverages with occasional blitz (almost always keeping 1 deep safety).

PK is, by all accounts, as low-ego a guy as you'll find.  He took a demotion at Washington so that Jimmy Lake could be the DC to ensure that Lake stayed on staff.  He's had plenty of opportunities to interview or take a HC job but appears to be completely uninterested.  I expect he's going to allow Akina pretty wide latitude in technique and scheme that the back end of the defense plays.

With Akina coaching the secondary, I would think we would see some pretty big differences. He likes to play more man-to-man in general, and Texas has a lot of talent at CB this year. They should defend the pass really well, but I guess because of scheme updates they could bust a few assignments too.

I think Taaffe at nickel has Akina's prints all over it

Run the fuck out of man coverage and just shade over top of #4 and at times #17 as well.

Put the pressure on this kid to throw guys open and don't let them just dink and dunk underneath and find soft spots in zone.

Basically, fuck them up from the get go and wreck his confidence.

I suggest every one take some time and get familiar with Cover 3. Watch some YouTube  videos/tutorials. The Cover 2 boys (Joseph/Gideon) are gone. PK was heavy Cover 3 based at every stop before coming to Texas. It’s easier to disguise your Cover 3 vs Man looks as compared to the two high looks we used a lot last couple of years. PK couldn’t tie his fronts up well with the Cover 2 until Patterson came and helped out the crew since he could teach Cover 2/4 from the secondary perspective well.

Taaffe at nickel seems regaurded. He's great in zone playing back and finding picks.

He sucks at changing directions and getting shook as fuck (remember last year spring game?).

They are going to put Tate in the slot and Taaffe will be 5 yards behind the guy every cut

I tend to agree. It does not seem to me to align with his skill set. And lord knows we have bodies to throw at it there, including last year’s starter.

Im aware of cover 3 defense

We used to call it Iverson 😛

If there's an aggressive way to play with 3 deep coverage I'm down. Can't get beat on dink and dunk over the middle or letting the QB run. They've got great wide receivers and if they can get them the ball with some space it's going to be tough to defend. I'd rather see them jammed at the LOS often and make that QB hold onto the ball more to make a decision while the pass rush is on his ass.

So Man 2 coverage. That is not very aggressive.

Perhaps you're joking.  But I remember attending the Spring scrimmage in 2010, after Mack scape-goated Greg Davis for the Alabama loss and vowed to change the offense to what he thought would be an SEC power running unit.  I watched our running backs proceed to run into their offensive line over and over again, and turned to my dad and say, "Uh oh."

All I can do is laugh at this post. It took me longer than that but when I saw it I couldn’t unsee it and my brain started to hurt. I don’t think Mack could’ve destroyed his program more thoroughly if he asked the A&M bonfire crew to take over.

I like the idea of running man. If a frosh QB with zero starts behind a patchwork O line vs our defense if we only give him 2 seconds until he’s running for his life quick reads will be the key and if we are manned up it’s sack city

Why would this be true

I feel like the last few years is CFB playoffs have shown us a good offense will decimate a good man to man D.  That disguise and blitz is the way to get a CFB playoff QB off his game.

I would say, with a healthy Lagway its absolutely 2nd or 3rd.

Definitely not bigger than OSU and depending on how it shakes out this season Georgia is 2nd or 3rd. Given recent history, I'd out Georgia above Florida, but with how early this gsme it, our OL performance is a much greater cause for concern than I think it will be by Georgia.

Recruiting notes and a team note

A few late lunchtime notes on recruiting and the team.

A RB note ...
Cedric Baxter Jr. Tre Wisner and Christian Clark have received the bulk of the mention throughout fall camp. Another that needs to be mentioned by OTF is freshman James Simon. The 6-foot, 207-pounder had a very solid spring in Austin, and that has carried over to fall camp per two sources. The Texas staff likes the instinctive running, and maximization ability in space from the 4-star freshman out of Shreveport. OTF fully expects Simon to play some this season.

Simon's junior tape. I can't find senior year.
