I went for my first Rangers game last week at the new ballpark.  I was completely unprepared for the "moment of silence for Charlie Kirk" followed by the SSB.  The "moment" went on for nearly a minute (felt like an hour), and I had to resist sparking a conversation with the wife lest I get thrown out.  Also, for the first time that I can ever recall, I did not put my hand over my heart for the SSB.  Just felt cheap and compulsory.

My own little protest.

Yeah I've always done that. Fuck that shit right now.

Dana White is almost as big of a piece of shit as Trump is.  He'll cradle the balls, stroke the shaft, work the pipe and swallow the gravy.

Maybe we'll get lucky and Trump will feel a bit randy only to jump in the ring but take a folding chair to noggin.  While Trump is legitimately unconscious on the mat, JD Vance will then come flying off the top rope with an attempted reverse 450 but instead only make it a 420, knocks himself silly all while the entrie country is watching live on Trump TV, I mean CBS.

I don't watch golf, so I don't know what happened there.

I watch about 110-120 MLB games per year, as much college football that is realistically possible and same with NFL.  I also watch college basketball.

My rules for watching, regardless of team, even if it is my favorite:

1. no pregame.  No fucks given.

2. no postgame.  Upon the final whistle, channel is changed or TV is turned off.  I don't want to hear what anyone has to say.

3. Halftime- muted or change to another game.  Time to grab a sammich or beer or fold clothes.  Anything besides listen to the talking heads.

4. Very little sports talk during the week.  I have listened to about an hour total of Colin Cowherd on the season, and he generally avoids the bullshit.

I couldn't tell you which games the alleged dignitaries have attended or refused.  I hope they stay away because it further disrupts things for the real fans.

Attending a game in person, I will always stand for the SSB and any prayer or moment of silence.  It's just how I'm wired.  I don't expect that from anyone else, and I respect that it's their deal too.  I will agree that at a certain point things feel much more "forced" than they used to.  I'm not sure what the answer is, but I definitely feel the vibe being discussed in the thread at live events.

Yeah ... for me the sports and the individual games have become so trivial to me compared to everything else that's happening right now, it's just hard for me to muster much emotional energy to put into them. I used to post all the time about football, F1, volleyball, baseball, & more. Not just here, either. Now I hardly post on that stuff at all & don't care about it even a fraction as much as I did even a year or so ago. I still watch, some sports more than others, but it still ain't the same.

Yesterday on the Ryder Cup thread, I said the US could still win if Mike Pence had the courage, and one of our delicate friends responded that

“it will all be over for you soon”

Don't get me started on the Rangers playing "God Bless America" or "America the Beautiful" during the 7th Inning Stretch rather than the "Cotton Eyed Joe" or "Take Me Out to the Ballgame" like we did in the normal times. The Rangers are also the ONLY MLB team to not do a goddamn thing to honor LGBTQ+ during Pride Month.

Yeah and whose fucking idea was it to stop playing the Cotton-Eyed Joe (not the LHB version, either) at the Disch? Fuck that person, whoever they are.

The triviality is the draw for me.

I wish it would remain/ return to being a neutral distraction for everyone.

something visceral happened when I was watching the Ryder cup in the background and trump came out. Before that I was begrudgingly rooting for our guys because USA. But 1) they are pretty unlikable already, but 2) their adulation of trump sickened me.

Add that to all those comics going to Riyadh, wwe moving wrestlemania to Saudi Arabia, and just all the shit going on in the world and the state of Texas and at the university. Everything is going the wrong direction and I'm the one taking crazy pills.

It's tough to fully compartmentalize any longer. I'm starting to just watch football games I don't care about and admire the athleticism. But even then you got to wade through all the fucking jingoism that's become dog whistles for trump supporters. It fucking sucks.

It really does suck.

Last year I went to JerryWorld to watch my alma mater compete in the state title game. Saw a pack of old geezers a few rows in front all donning the red MAGA hats. Sickening. Like…I’d never been to a football game at any level and saw more than one person (if any at all) wearing a political shirt/hat, and yet in total I saw a dozen of those stupid trucker hats at just that one fucking high school game. Seriously there was more political bullshit at that one game than in all 36 years I’d been attending sporting events combined.

I haven't attended many Astros game in the last couple of years but they previously would play Take Me out the Ballpark followed by Deep in the Heart of Texas in the 7th inning stretch. Both of which can be fun songs to show people singing or dancing on the big screen.

The only exception would be God Bless America on Sunday game's 7th inning stretch. I guess there was some connection that since it's church day and the song had God in its title. Who knows, maybe they sing God Bless America every day now.

I've never understood the need to play the national anthem at sporting events. Except that now any team that didn't play it would be labeled as anti-American. Which makes zero sense. I find the song's main purpose at games is for those who want to virtue signal and don't get me started when someone goes after someone else for not removing their hat. Snowflakes who just want to get mad at someone.

It's 'cause God only watches baseball on Sundays. too busy during the week.

I’m a Red Sox fan. If it can’t be the Sox then I’m pulling hard for the Blue Jays to win it all.

I finally quit on Longhorn football when they lined up tight formation on the goal line on fourth and goal and ran yet another QB sneak for no gain against Ohio State. I said fuck this bullshit, turned it off, and haven’t paid attention to it since. If Texas wins, great. If not, I don’t really care anymore. I had no idea we had a bye this past weekend. My life is better for it.

I won’t root for an American to win anything for the foreseeable future. If you fly an American flag, I just think you are a fascist asshole. The anthem pretty much makes me sick to my stomach now.

Fuck ‘em all.

Red Sox play at 2:00pm Alaska time tomorrow.
Go Sox!

I really enjoy motorsports, including NASCAR, but I haven't been able to give much of a shit about it this season, all due to various aspects of Trumpery. I get a weekly email from them asking about my thoughts on the previous weekend's races, and I told them to fuck off for good in the first survey post-Kirk. Amusingly enough, they also got a bunch of grief from the MAGA types for not airing the pre-race moment of silence.

I knew that I'm not NASCAR's target demographic, but I just don't care to set my differences aside with those people any longer, even though we have enjoyment of motorsports in common.

Fuck them in the goatass.

Man, I wrestle with this. It sucks but I remind myself that this is what they want, to shrink America and all of public life down into MAGA or not and to make the “not” section small and sad. MAGA wants a world where only MAGA stands for the anthem or enjoys a ballgame. Authoritarians do this everywhere.

Shortly after New Year’s Day 2021 I went for a sunrise paddle on the Laguna Madre. Paddling back to shore, a group of boaters roared passed me in a no-wake zone, Trump 2020 flag flapping (remember the boat parades) and I heard some hoots as I stabilized and balanced from the wake.

An asshole attempt to ruin a stranger’s day. But— I’m the one who got to spend the morning with the stingrays and dolphins and sea salt, all while not thinking about Donald Trump at all. And they couldn’t do even that.  I won the day.

Bottom line: Why should I change what I like?  They’re the ones who suck.

not to derail a small detail of this thread, because i agree wholeheartedly and look forward to hearing an earful from hank next time we talk, but i think "god bless america" started during the 7th inning stretch after 9/11 (typically played before "take me out to the ball game"). i have no idea how many teams did it, still do it, stopped doing it, whatever.

i don't go to many mlb games anymore.

Off topic but the other day I realized that I dont think that I’ve ever seen true MAGA hat in the wild. Saw some young woman wearing a trump ball cap at a bar once but never a red MAGA cap.

I agree with the OP.

I've been an MMA fan since the beginning.  My first UFC PPV was UFC 2.  My buddy was like, you've got to check this out, it's like boxing but no rules, a real fight!  He'd ordered the first one out of curiosity.  We watched the second one and we've been hooked ever since.  That was like 1993.  I stayed hooked through the Pride FC years, the Ultimate Fighter show and the explosive growth in popularity, etc.

I don't even think I can follow the sport anymore, knowing what a piece of shit Dana White is, and a lot of the fighters, too.  I just find myself not caring to tune in anymore.  Maybe I can just root for the Brazilians and European fighters now, but I kinda don't want to give that fat Boston fake tough guy moron another nickle.

Fuck you very much, MAGA.

Yeah, there's something to be said for that.  At an Austin FC match last year, Gina Chavez sang the anthem.  And goddammit, I teared up a bit.  That's MY anthem, for MY country.  It belongs to all of us.  And if a fucking hispanic lesbian -- so utterly hated by half our country for no fucking good reason whatsoever -- can stand up their and sing it, and own it, because this is HER country too...then goddammit, I can own it too.

That's the hell of it.  I love this country.  I am a real, actual patriot.  Not a performative lying piece of shit.  How can you claim to be a patriot but hate half the people in this country for no good reason, be okay with sodomizing the Constitution, and support installing a monarch?  Fuck them.  I'm a patriot. I believe in what this country can be, that it can be better, that it is capable of moving forward.  I've got generations of my family standing behind me who risked it all for this country.  We literally fought as anti-fascists.

No, the fascists can't have my country.  They can't have my anthem, my flag.  Fuck them for daring to claim it as they betray it.

I understand the feeling. I really do. However, I still put my flag up most of the year. I refuse to let the symbol of our country be taken over by these assholes. For all the shitty things it represents, past and present, I still have a certain idea of what it should be and I won't let the progress that has been made be undone. Even if that progress did seem to come at a glacial pace. So, fuckem.

You stay classy out there on the links, 'Murica.

Having spent a really good amount of time around Long Islanders, specifically ones from Suffolk County, I expected that. I was absolutely glad to see the US FAFO and not only lose, but have the Europeans laugh at them and TFG. More of that please.

So ... I've been asked exactly how I link this weekend's boorish behavior to Turnip, and I'm having trouble coming up with an argument I can back up. I mean we all know what we saw, but how do I make that assertion in a better way than "I knows what I seent"?

Little help? Anyone?
