Fewer.

My original premise is no one gives a shit who Stephen Miller is, and they don't and they shouldn't. As soon as he becomes someone that's important that's when you know things are actually getting WORSE.

By the time people are boarded onto the trains it will be too late to start to worry

Yes, I have thorough faith that Trump's policies are based in the law of the land. She's right, but it means nothing outside of a debate exercise. That's not what we're doing here.

Perhaps your faith in what you call data is misplaced if it keeps you from looking deeper.

Instilling all the policies you list is a huge victory. Precedent. Testing the waters for future action. Making sending federal troop to address illusory urban rebellion something that ceases to be headline news because it happens all the time is enormous.

The "data" (to be clear, I'm sure it's accurate and that you are honest) about deportation numbers, as well as national guard and ICE deployment "measurable" outcomes is not the point of their operation.  Clue: they're not doing anything in good faith nor justifying them by citing anything true.

Trump declares Portland a hellish warzone. Miller talks of attacks on ICE based on a desire to deny the election of Trump. (After reporting this, I'm sure CNN had a couple of guys on a panel say that they didn't think this was true. yay cnn.)

Trump announces his plan to use the Army in the future to take over the streets in these illusory hellholes to all of his flag officers.  OBTW we'll be firing 20% of you (tacitly: go along or lose your cush jobs and status). It is a story for only part of any news show you can name.

I don't know who the normies are. I wonder if you mean the 30% who acquiesced to Trump's election by not seeing enough reason to even vote. The normies have had plenty of triggers to rise up. They are not doing so.

Your complacence about the odds of everything going down the sewer is remarkable to me. The water is rising with nothing in sight to slow it down.

It's often a fatal error to misjudge an opponent as dumber, not as brave, or not as determined as you are.

imma, do a brain exercise with me. Think back to a year ago. If I had told you the following:

"Trump's going to win the election, and, within a year, the National Guard can and will be spun up to occupy any Democrat-run city at the President's will. ICE will be indiscriminately gathering people up and attacking them on the streets solely by race (with Supreme Court approval). Openly daring someone to fight back, so things can be even further escalated. Habeous corpus and due process will be ignored as humans--illegal or otherwise--are sent to 3rd world prisons to be tortured or disappeared. POTUS, in plain words, will declare Democrats the enemy of the nation, and political violence by the right is justified to to stop their radicalism. The media will capitulate at every step of the way, lest they be punished or removed. And Trump would still win a national election if it were held Nov 2, 2025."

You would have told me to get ahold of myself and stop with the hyperbole, yes? Shit, I'd be telling myself that a year ago.

So what are the things that you're going to be asking us to not overreact to at this point next year?

When everyone just sits back and expects things like norms and precedent to eventually hold [narrator: they won't], incompetent and stupid can accomplish a hell of a lot through force, lies, and shamelessness.

A year ago I did believe that. I knew that. They are behind schedule pretty far from where I thought they would be.

I'm surprised at how much normies are pushing back and how much non establishment resistance there is.

Why would this be a story?

Do you know how many people dont even know who this fucking dweeb is?

Everyone's too busy with making sure American consumers continue spending like drunken sailors to avoid a complete economic collapse to give two shits about what's actually happening.

there is a reason most people don't know who SM is - that's by design. but it is obvious to anyone who is paying attention that he is the one pulling the strings. people SHOULD know who he is. we should be screaming it from the rooftops. nothing you have said about him is untrue - he's a big fucking insecure dork and that is obvious by looking at him - but to play down his influence is irresponsible. if america has ever had a figurehead for a president it's now and SM is the puppeteer. everyone should be paying attention to what he says and acting accordingly.

You should really read a history book about 1930s Germany and how often the nazis fucked up their plans and pissed off their citizenry until their schemes caught on through cultural normalization. There can be all the resistance you want, and then DHS will helo-rappel down and go Fallujah on them. The State has a legal monopoly on violence, and they have been ratcheting up with zero check on their power.

I really wish I had your optimistic mindset, but brother, America is as cooked as our o-line is.

feels like this deserves its own thread. stephen miller went on tv yesterday and told us that donald trump as complete authoritative power. this should be the biggest story in America right now, but it isn’t. i don’t understand how this is allowed to happen.

i wish just once that someone from the MSM would take advantage of a moment like this.

”okay, it appears that stephen miller accidentally said more than he was supposed to and is now pretending that he can’t hear us, or is possibly just frozen in fear. a lot for us to unpack later.” and then spend the entire next 72 hours giving it the wall to wall coverage that it deserves. the media could play such a big part in trying to unfuck this country, but so far they are as feckless and ineffectual as the democratic leadership.

Here's the thing....is that outcome a certainty?  Of course not.  Is it even "more likely than not?"  Probably not.

But....do we live in a world where there is a non-zero chance of it?  Yes.  Yes we do.

"Bad outcomes" are a matrix involving degree of certainty and degree of harm.  For example, a 10% chance of bruising your knee this week isn't a bad outcome.  A 1% chance of a nuclear detonation in your city this week is a fucking horrific outcome.

"Put to death for speech against the regime" at a .0000000000000000000000000000001% chance (in other words, what it has historically been in our lifetime) is fine.  "Put to death for speech against the regime" at even a .01% chance is a really, really, really fucking bad outcome.

We are in such fantastically deep trouble, and the incurable part of is is that our population is 40% in favor of it and 40% indifferent to it.  That leaves maybe 20% of us who have an inkling of how deadly the fire we're playing with really is.

Yeah I’m gonna have to disagree with imma here too. They are succeeding at everything. Only people on the left who are losing elections are “pushing back” and that’s not really the right term because there’s nothing they can do but point out how bad it’s getting and just hope some faction on the right will emerge to say “enough.” I’d like to think that deploying one states national guard against another might be that tipping point but nope. It’s going to take something like military opening fire on a group of US citizens and slaughtering dozens of them during a peaceful protest on private land (notice all of the qualifications there) and even then I’m skeptical it makes a difference. The speaker of the house would be on the floor praising the president and military for putting down an insurrection. Notice they’re already using that word to refer to anyone left of center?

Actually, we are in month 9 of Trump 2.0, which is way different than Trump 1.0 when he had people who didn’t indulge his worst desires, people like Barr and Bolton and Tillerson, etc. There was no Pam Bondi, Pete Hegseth and Stephen Miller wasn’t quite as front-and-center.

This. Is. Different. Bad actors abound. They do not want to leave power in 2028. Yes, it would be great if this magically goes away upon the fat turd’s death. I don’t have complete faith that it will.

I had the odd thought…

In some ways you can argue once things have been attempted to be equalized and brought together in equity, there are no pressure valves (historically there have been abused and taken advantage groups that allow for the pressure release) and the whole engine was always destined to blow without a way to manage the full scale tension of everything being equal.

It’s a flaw in the design of the machine more than anything. Our society literally wasn’t built for equality and equity and inclusion and fairness (white male landowners out front shoulda told you).

We actually probably need a new model and to redesign the hardware from first principles rather than keep trying to configure and customize the system we have that isn’t built for the purpose we are trying to bend it towards.

Maybe if things had ever actually been equal or equitable this would make some sort of sense. Maybe.

The biggest problem in this entire situation is that even if 100% of Americans knew word-for-word what Miller said, only 10% or less of them would know what the word 'plenary' meant.

This.  Miller's comments are a big nothing-burger to most of the American public.  Even a huge chunk of Democrats don't know what he meant, just that he's generally a ginormous shitbag so it must be something bad.

Joke's on you.  The conference was in San Diego that year, and I ditched the main session to watch an afternoon game at old Jack Murphy between the Padres and Stros.  It was glorious.

(That's a true story, by the way - first conference I ever went to, I was still a law student, and fuck yeah I ditched and went to a baseball game in 70 degree weather)
