I use surfshark on my PC and phone, it was like $50 for 2 years or something

I finally subscribed to a VPN a couple of weeks ago. Why won't tweets load here while the VPN is active?

Because you touch yourself at night. But not to porn. Nope. Not anymore.

Twitter and a lot of social media companies block VPNs because you touch yourself at night as an attempt at combatting all kinds of fraud, from misinformation to porn to bot farms clicking on ads and driving up numbers of “influencers”.

Ahem.

For the more technically astute folks here, who may want every device in their house to automatically select an alternative location for certain websites, I suggest Control D.

It's not a VPN, but  managed DNS service for your home.  Among the many features:

Quote

Control D’s Default Location feature is like a VPN without any apps. It will make sites that you visit think that you’re in a different country, and change your IP address from the perspective of websites and apps.

It's not free ($40 a year) but it works really, really well.   There's a lot of other advantages of using a managed DNS service as well.

When smart phones first came out I thought only the depraved jerk off with their phone.  Now I feel depraved if I look at porn on anything other than my phone.

When smartphones started getting water proof/resistant, it took things to a whole ‘ other level with jerking in the shower.

There’s also like a billion sites out there that are free and unaffected. The stupid government can’t keep track of them all. It’s like 1/3 of the entire internet. If you are too lazy to find them, you just don’t want it bad enough.

I guess the dedicated IP option is the way to go?

Plus, if you're dumb enough to sign up with one of the "verification" services, then congrats, your name, address, DL #, etc. is now in a database of people who voluntarily admitted they viewed porn (which the State of Texas will be interested in).  And your info is probably already for sale on the various identity theft sites.

Big Government at its finest.  Since they won that victory, they won't stop - we will get feature creep at a massive level. They'll redefine what an "adult" site is, which could easily rope in a lot of online forums, etc. and probably try to expand the scope to mentions of marijuana, etc.

"To protect the children".

If I'm a VPN provider

Anthony Adams Slow Clap GIF

They'll expand it first to include any show with a gay character. Then any show that conservatives don't like for any reason. There's no stop to this.

States want to require sites to block known VPN IPs:

Quote

What the proposed state legislation says

In Wisconsin, Senate Bill 130 proposes that sites use “reasonable age verification methods” and requires the publishers and distributors of “material harmful to minors” to prevent access from known VPN IP addresses. Under the bill, entities in violation of the law would be subject to civil penalties.

I’m sure all the folks who 1) shout about free speech and liberty all the time, and 2) also vote Republican all the time…will be right on this, to take a stand for their principles.

We just need to make sure that all politicians understand that their browsing histories will be fodder for whoever wants that data.

So we’ll all just switch to unknown VPNs then?

Or move to a state that doesn't want to be all up in your business under their own warped views on "morality"?

Vote with your feet and wallet

Yes, your vote leaves Texas. But everyone sticking around bc “I’m not gonna let them win!” is doing a real bang up job of losing. They aren’t going to let you win

I see this line of thinking and action all the time. And when the subject matter has to do with fear of livelihood, I understand and support it.

But as it pertains to things like pron, weed, etc. I'm like fuck that noise. Even if I had the resources to move where there wouldn't be any of these issues, I still wouldn't do it. And that's because I'm of the mindset that "na, it's you fucktards with the problem."

I'll still do what I have to do to enjoy the things I want, and voice my opinion/vote when the opportunity arises.

Lifelong Texan here since born in Abilene in 1970.  Lived in Slow-deatha, Republic of Austin, SA.  Remember when we used to be “The Friendly State” with a mind your own business mentality.  The state didn’t change but the Republican Party that has pretty continuously been in charge sure has.  We have never really regulated business much.  Same used to be pretty true about flesh and blood people (“Odessans for Decency” preventing Ozzy coming to town was an example of an exception to that rule).  But, the slow creep of personal regulation is wearing this Texan’s ass out.

Reproductive rights, small-minded towns with “travel bans”, what stocks you can invest in, what books your kids can read in school, criminalization of folks navigating personal gender issues, what websites a grown-ass person can look at, adulterers with the audacity of forcing the 10 commandments posted in every classroom, public taxes to pay for religious school.  The list goes on and on, largely driven by a few oil-funded, religiously extreme oligarchs.  The real dismal tide.

I don’t blame any Texan for leaving.  I think about it too.

I can’t rep this enough.

The party that claims to be “conservative” is anything but conservative when it comes to their actual actions.

TEXAS HEALTH AND HUMAN SERVICES WARNING:

I didn't think about it at the time, but the State of Texas wanted this (along with other disclaimers) displayed at the bottom of every porn site accessed by Texans, and let's be real, this could be the best Surly motto ever:

Exposure to this content is associated with low self-esteem and body image, eating disorders, impaired brain development, and other emotional and mental illnesses.

Shouldn’t that have to go on the Fox News scroll too?
