I want Zelenskyy and his group to survive that’s why I want this convoy and any convoy coming after it torched and blown the fuck up.

We all want that.  Particularly Zelenskyy surviving.  I hope the Russians get fucked.  Particularly Putin--his head belongs on a pike.  Though honestly, I'm not rooting for their soldiers, many of whom are still teenagers, to be killed.

Take a deep breath.  None of this is ending tonight, regardless of what happens.

I read earlier the a fuel resupply was destroyed today.  What if we know their convey is just going to get to Kyiv only to run out of gas, like everything else there.  Why waste resources then attacking a convey we know will be out of gas?  Keep destroying refueling conveys.

Cool to see your boat is still active. Something broke in me when my old ship was decommissioned and sunk during a training exercise

Something broke in me when we spent $200m on a new threat upgrade, could hit a drone 150 miles out, but put it on a 30 year old steam engine platform that couldn’t keep up with the carrier it was designed to protect. During our WESTPAC the rest of the carrier group left us at Kismayo for Operation Restore Hope because we didn’t have the speed to keep up with everyone else.

That old boy needed to be decommissioned.

I think we also need to talk about the very structure of the Russian Army, and whether it is contributing to this.  Russia now organizes its army into "battalion tactical groups."  It's a combined-arms concept--each BTG is going to have infantry, artillery, and air defense, along with its logistics and engineering.  But he punchline on that is that you've got only 200 infantry in a BTG that has 800 total guys.  And that's just not a lot to guard your supply lines.

There's a lot to be said for the maneuverability that comes with such small units.  And the self-contained combined-arms aspect is real attractive.  But if they can't secure their supply lines on their own, and if they can't forage effectively in hostile territory, what maneuverability do they really have?

Yeah, pretty much everything they're doing tactically is a disaster. Small unit tactics was a shift we made many years ago and it worked great for us because we were able to use combined arms effectively. We developed a strong unit-level leadership who can make decisions based on an overarching commander's intent, and then has joint ground operations supported by air and artillery. We are also REALLY good at logistics. The VAST majority of all our military forces are actually supporting units, NOT infantry.

The Russians look like they tried to replicate all of our success over the past few decades and yet didn't bother to put into place any of the pieces that make it work. At the unit-level, the troops have NO clue what they're even doing there. This doesn't give them the latitude to adjust to accomplish the mission in the face of adversity. They must have Generals in the rear trying to micromanage this entire disaster. Command and control of every unit when they're spread out over creation must be a nightmare, hence the logistics issues. They also don't seem to be supporting their convoys with any overhead cover. Another major mistake was not establishing airports and things for resupply points. I mean it's basically amateur hour all around. It's crazy, I laugh, but then I have to remind myself that people are dying.

Or get them bottle necked in Kyiv and rain down malotov cocktails and everything else they've got.

We'll have to see if that dude is right about a full diplomatic withdrawal. I'm skeptical. Not sure how they'd even get back to RU at this point.

This is as well, I have to think there is some level of a strategic reason not to be acting on this.  We know they have turkish drones with missiles.

I mean, to be honest it really is just a quick jaunt over the border. Canada and Russia are neighbors looking at the globe from the top down. As Pitch Meeting’s Ryan would say, “It’d be super easy, barely an inconvenience.”

So when does Kyiv have so many Russian POWs they become a drain on resources? You have to feed and shelter them and at some point resources are going to get scarce. Can’t give them to the Russians they’ll just give them guns and point them back at you

The thing I’ve seen numerous times, and it’s the same thing tickling the back of our brains for all of us who follow some of this stuff obsessively, is why do the Russians seems so completely and utterly incompetent in this campaign versus what we’ve seen in Syria? I’ve seen speculation regarding that which makes sense, but it still astounds me. I followed them in Georgia versus Crimea and the Donbas, and the improvement was night and day. The stuff we’re seeing now harkens back to their incompetence in Georgia, and in Chechnya both 1 and 2.

The special forces landing and capturing airports then left to fend for themselves with no support coming in. The constant separation between forward offensive forces and their support, leaving the support vulnerable and the assault out of gas and food. The grounding of the preponderance of their Air Force. The indiscriminate use of helicopters with no additional air support, leaving them naked to ground based attacks, with no reprisals.  The lack of night gear. The lack of intelligence warfare. The lack of information warfare. The lack of cyber attacks.

The whole thing has been bizarre to me.

That has been the entire thing so far.  We are all saying no way they are dumb enough to do this and then they do it.  In my brain there is only two reasons they do a 40 mile convoy.  It is to draw out the Ukrainians army in full force to attack them.  Or it is to scare Zelensky of the sheer numbers.  Everyone says oh they are sitting ducks.  There are S400s in that convoy.  They would tear a fighter jet to shreds.  The only thing I would try on them right now is a drone in the front and a drone in the rear.  And hit the fuel.  If they get shot down at least you know they have some AA.  But I really think they are trying to beg the Ukrainians into attacking them in the open

Yeah, no one wanted to requisition a BT punch a second time, that’s for sure.

A 20km convoy turns into a 40km convoy pretty quick simply by putting 2 truck lengths in between each vehicle.  Probably a good idea for them anyways so they get blown up in groups of 3-4 rather than 6-8.

Also can we use miles? Fuck that should be part of our concession once Ukraine wins. Russia has to move to the US measurement system.

Maybe but I think there are several other plausible reasons.

  1. Something broke down in the front and they can't get by
  2. Something blew up in front...
  3. They are confused by all the signs saying Russians go fuck yourselves
  4. We are playing with the GPS signals they are getting
  5. Their orders are not clear
  6. They are disobeying orders and waiting for Putain to get dead
  7. Their comms are jammed and can't get orders
  8. The guys from Super troopers are creating a diversion

Yes, that text the Russian soldier sent to his mother, that the Ukrainian envoy to the UN read this morning was heart wrenching. Conscripted and hauled to the Ukrainian border, given a minimal amount of bullets, and food. Then given marching orders into openly hostile territory, and he knew nothing about why he was there.

Watching the dude from Round Rock, and listening to his schtick, I truly believe that the Russians, and Putin, thought they would be welcomed. It certainly explains why the Russians are so ill equipped, and ill prepared. They were supposed to pull up to the Parliament steps, having only stopped at the 7-11 for a six-pack, and be treated with keys to the city. They got Mike Tyson'ed, with their plans.
