NCAA to Allow Players to be Compensated for their Names, Likenesses, and Images

Recommended Posts

Ya, this is a big step. Kids with elite abilities coming up are licking their chops. People like Ricky and VY would have crushed it in their college years.

So recruiting is going to be a total shit show now..   Do they have to share and are there limits?  If not qb drives a Lamborghini and oline still can’t afford anything?

I think this is a necessary step.

I have no idea what this does for P5 sports though. I guess the boosters can now openly hire the kids by "compensating them for their image". Might as well.

The joke about how the kid from SMU got a pay cut to go to the NFL might literally be true soon.

Well the haves and the have nots are really going to seperated now, kids will make a hell of a lot more with their name on a Notre Dame jersey than say a Michigan State.  Unless there's something else to this.

Your move, EA Sports.

How likely is it that NCAA Football comes back? Was this the only thing that causes them to cease production of the game?

Pretty much this.  It's clear something needed to be done.  But I'm not sure how you even draw the line.  And who's to say what is fair market value for what they should be making. If someone is willing to pay them $X amount, that is market value.

We’ll be hearing this statement often. “I’m hitting the portal.  Taking my talents to this other school(booster) that made a better offer”

“have to share”?  I assume the schools are out of this equation.  the players will be getting showered with money from third parties.

I don't. Most kids won't make a lot of money on their name and likeness.

Texas needs to press as far ahead as they can to take advantage of this.  There is no official line yet so don't worry about crossing any.  Get the best players and money whip the fuck out of everyone.  We now have a decided schematic advantage over almost everyone.

Recruiting is going to suck balls.  I'd like to see transparency on where the money comes from, who distributes it and who receives it.  Tax'em young!

NCAA should push hard for them to come back as they were offering to pay EVERY player in the game.

this would help with some of the “fairness” aspects that some are sure to complain about.

Exactly, this only really works for the .1% of college football players. There will be an early splash of cash that will eventually dwindle when the ROE is shit.

There will now be a booster component where you have to run an outside business to pay for recruits.

though the NCAA’s three divisions must still craft their own rules and detail the specifics.

This is what I'm waiting to see.

That's the problem with this model that no one has addressed, yet.  The coach/school aren't signing the paychecks.  You think it's hard to manage the utes now?  Just wait til their being paid by someone without allegiance to the program.

Let Red form a sweet little media company to write Sam an "I like your likeness" check for about $500,000 and send a message to recruits.  Come to Texas and be just like Sam.

Just the final nail in the coffin for my interest in college sports. It will become a giant shit show mess. Time to move onto other life pursuits.

I actually see this making cheating more difficult.  I am guessing that there will be strict rules on the money and it might even have to be approved by NCAA.  It will make the trans am and fed ex obsolete.  A school like Texas should clean up - large fan base and the ability to hire compliance staff.

I too am horrified that adult Americans will be able to make money based on the free market's opinion of the value that they add to various commercial interests.

Not sure how this is going to pan out.  How much payment are we talking about and is it based on ability?  Will female athletes be paid as much as male?  I can easily see this quickly becoming the haves v the have nots.  The wealthier athletic programs like Texas will be fine but what about the not so wealthy ones.  Will there be bidding wars over 5 star athletes?  I can see agents calling High School students all over the country today lining up new clients.

Yeah, it sucks for disparity between the haves and have nots. But I can't think of a single good reason to deny anyone the right to take money someone else wants to pay them for their services. The next thing that needs to go is the three year rule. If an NFL team wants to take a risk on an 18 year old kid out of high school, why the fuck should the kid be denied that money? The risk should be on the owners willing to pay. Instead, the risk of injury or not being good enough is on the kid. Thats not how this should work.

They were already paid.  They get coaching, advertising, free education, stipend, food, medical, fitness, room and board.   The marginal programs are screwed.   Oregon will see a huge boost as they can feature their athletes on their ads.

But I'm fat and slow.  Doesn't there need to be a semblance of fairness here?

So? I'm supposed to be horrified because now they'll be allowed to be paid by two different non-competing entities? Again, a total fucking nightmare.

I mean Aaron Rodgers is paid a lot by the Packers. He shouldn't be allowed to take money from State Farm, right? He's already getting paid.

It could possibly reduce the bag men as well. The incentive to pass under the table payments would be gone. Why risk arrest when you don’t have to.

certain kids may even get less under the table money as they save it to attract Trevor Lawrence to the transfer portal etc....

it could also put some of those trainers/uncles/advisors out of business as the payments no longer need to be funneled.

The next move by the NCAA should be to challenge the 18yr old age rule from the NFL.

Shift some of the burden of paying 18 year old high school stars to the professional league.

I hate to say it, but this is my gut feeling too. I don’t want it to not care about Texas and college football, but this has the potential to fuck up some of the reasons I love it. I still have a very strong porn habit to fall back on. Or I could get back into bouncing and surfing.

What reasons are those that would be fucked up by this? I'm assuming "I love to watch young adults sacrifice their bodies for my entertainment without the freedom to maximize their profits from those sacrifices" isn't one of them.
