Washington DC's NFL franchise to get a new name

Recommended Posts

I would only be in favor of this if the majority of Native Americans are behind the change and always have been..not white (or any other race) woketivists.

Having said that, as a Cowboys fan I've alway referred to them as either Deadskins or Foreskins..no movement gonna change that

Are you serious about the Prairie N label?

That was going to be my suggestion for the new name, but fine never mind I guess.

Yeah, having done rural rotations on reservations back in the day, they were not fans.  Of course, they had way more pressing concerns but as a Dallas fan back then, the team name came up and all of them were against it, but had a wtf can we do about it attitude.  Maybe the majority of the ‘my great grandma was an Indian princess’ set don’t care so much.

And that's what so many people fail to grasp. Even if it were true (and it's not) that "most Native Americans don't care about the term Redskins", it's largely because they're dealing with far more important things on a daily basis than what some rich white people decide to name their sports' team. Like surviving on the shitty stretches of land that our forefathers left them with little hope of change or true equality.

Black people didn't care that they were underrepresented with Academy Award nominations 60 years ago. They had more pressing shit to focus on.

We should consider it progress if/when the Native American community can focus its attention on the more superficial injustices.

So what? It's still racist.

So the National Congress of American Indians, an organization of tribal leaders from nearly every tribe in the US, supports the change. But 504 “self identified” Indians in a telephone poll and a UND grad some guy knows like the name so I guess we should just go with that, lol.

The Red Tails idea is actually a really good one. It would be a good way to keep the uniform colors and you'd really only need to rework the logo.

The best is Idaho. It's not even a real Native name. Some random dude from Philadelphia called it Idaho after a girl named Ida and got it through Congress by saying it was Shoshone for "gem of the mountains"

https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/Idaho#:~:text=States highlighting Idaho-,Etymology,made up the name himself.

Whitey got one in that time, butI wouldn't put it past the Native Americans to have come up with some zingers. Here's some pale dude staggering off a giant canoe, wearing a possum on his face-- no wait, that's his own hair-- waving around at stuff and obviously asking questions.

Hey-- bet he's asking us what this place is.

Tell him "Dickbutt."

OK. Hey buddy, it's "Dickbutt."

[white stranger]: tadaka laka maka "Deekbot?"

Yeah dude, "Dickbutt."

Fast forward 400 years. The Native pranksters are long gone, and various1/32 Deekbot Tribal members (31/32 Yorkshire, but that doesn't count) are yelling at other people, also mostly from Yorkshire, about, hell, who knows what.

(Me I just want my farm back from the Normans, and not have to use all these gotdam French words just to speak my own language.)

These are going to be some of those changes that seem really hard and painful but, pretty much a week after they're made, 75% of fans will either be happy about or stop caring about. 5-10% will wear the old gear at games out of spite, making this pointlessly awkward and divisive at the games.

Stanford and St Johns and several other teams already went through this. NFL fans can do the same.

And it is so passed due and has been such a long and ridiculous discussion I think most will just be relieved to finally move on. Now if only we could move on from Dan Snyder.

That actually happened a lot. Iroquois is just "rattlesnake" in Algonquin and Sioux means "snake" in Ojibwa because the French asked them who those people were and the Northern tribes were like "bunch of fucking snakes, I'll tell you what".

Have a few Native American friends/acquaintances and they've been banging on this for years. It's time for a change.

I see the Cleveland Indians are likely to do the same. I think they should bring back the Cleveland Spiders.

Quote

The name is a dictionary-defined slur, whether or not 10 percent of Native Americans or 50 percent of your co-workers or your favorite aunt acknowledge it.

Numbers are neat and easy to understand. Identity and racism are messy and complicated. That disconnect comes through when you look closer at some of the participants of The Post’s poll. I spoke to many at the time. One woman who said she wouldn’t be offended if someone called her a “Redskin” had already been called “Pocahontas,” “Tonto” and “Kemosahbee.”

Sometimes, groups need a helping hand after centuries of abuse and degradation.

Some good points.  On another note it’s good to know that Nike, Fedex, etc are so concerned with making Native Americans lives better.  Wonder what other, real tangible, things these companies are doing to better NA lives? I’m guessing not much.  Symbolic gestures are so much easier.

That's really weird how you decided to respond to this but somehow totally missed the multiple academic references showing that your 90% claim was complete bullshit. I guess you just missed those posts? No worries, you can now go back and read them and then post about how you were wrong.

90% of basic white bitches that have a dreamcatcher tattoo on their lower back because they're 2.2% Cherokee agree: not offensive

Actual Native Americans: 67% find it offensive https://news.berkeley.edu/2020/02/04/native-mascots-survey/

Who are we to believe? A bunch of Elizabeth Warrens, or actual Native Americans?

Wife and kid are out of town. So while bored I decided to catch up on new porn. I stumbled upon an Elizabeth Warren look a like, buying votes. And that is why America rocks.

I'm not gonna judge, as I'll hit the milf category from time to time just to keep it real, but viewing granny porn is a cry for help.

Change the team color to green, put a guy in a suit holding out an arm with a huge bag of money on both sides of the helmet, and call them the Washington Lobbyists. You'll have a team that sells out on every play.

So is there no such sentiment as logos/mascots that use NA names and imagery to celebrate the culture of bravery?  Like Spartans does to Sparta?

Any issues with the Apache attack helicopter or jeep Cherokee?  Tomahawk missile?

I understand that redskins and Indians are insensitive, but not every NA reference is, right?

They are probably going to end up with something XFL'ish like Renegades.

Complaining about Warriors is probably one of the dumber things these PC people complain about.  Up there with complaining about Ol' Abe.

Of all the things people have been arguing about changing due to inherent racism, this is probably the most obviously racist.  I think making UND change away from the Fighting Sioux is an overreaction.  It's an obvious homage.  Same with the Illinois Illini.  No offense intended clearly.

The Redskins are on par with having teams called the Atlanta N*ggers, Seattle Chinks, or Miami Spics.  It's completely beyond the pale (no pun intended) and has been for years.

I can't imagine being butt hurt about this, but welcome to America 2020, where the Confederate flag has become fetishized by northern Conservatives, and the god damn President is using blatant Nazi imagery in his reelection campaign.  Christ.

And several Sioux tribes endorsed the Fighting Sioux name.  One or two tribes threw a fit.

I agree with you on Redskins.

As for the last paragraph, seek help for your TDS.

DC didn't secede.  So more appropriate would be the Washington Union Generals.  They lost almost all the battles, but managed to win the war.  In fact, one of them wanted to just give up and ran for president in 1864.
