Coincidence?

While it is unclear how far the president will push the idea, U.S. officials view Greenland as important to American national-security interests. A decades-old defense treaty between Denmark and the U.S. gives the U.S. military virtually unlimited rights in Greenland at America’s northernmost base, Thule Air Base. Located 750 miles north of the Arctic Circle, it includes a radar station that is part of a U.S. ballistic missile early warning system. The base is also used by the U.S. Air Force Space Command and the North American Aerospace Defense Command.

The U.S. has sought to derail Chinese efforts to gain an economic foothold in Greenland. The Pentagon worked successfully in 2018 to block China from financing three airports on the island.

With global warming can we turn it in a large orange grove?

Dale Gribble:
[regarding global warming] I say let the world warm up, see what Boutros Boutros-Ghali-Ghali thinks about that! We'll grow oranges in Alaska.

Hank Hill:
Dale, you giblet-head, we live in Texas. It's already a hundred and ten in the summer, and if it gets one degree hotter, I'm gonna kick your ass!

I don't want to CR. Safe to say I'm not a fan of certain people. But this is an idea I can get behind. Maybe we could put a Spirit hub there and I could catch a flight from DTW to GLD for $112 r/t like I can to Tampa.

Doesn't that make it easier?

I was thinking that once Trump takes a big chunk of land for himself and some more for his friends (and there’s not much land that’s not constantly covered by ice), then the locals will get kind of restless.

Too bad they don't have oil and brown people.  Then we could invade and dispense with the pleasantries.

Where do you think we're planning on putting the brown people?

It could be the largest detention/catch and release center yet, but definitely a place for people legitimately seeking asylum from violence in their home country with zero expectations of welfare and free stuff. Here’s a parka, go and be happy! [kinda serious/no CR]

You know, I have a feeling that this would be one of those "daned if you do, daned if you don't" kinda deals.

See....I said "daned if you do, daned if you don't."

Is this thing on?

You know this idiot views this as a real estate deal that's right in his wheelhouse. When that fails, his ego will make him invade.

Don't worry.  It's a Trump real estate deal.  We'll finance it in part with laundered Russian money, still fail to make all of the required payments, and Denmark will repossess it.

I just hope their repo crew shows up in longboats with war drums and shit, because that would be awesome.

So funny thing...

https://www.newsweek.com/greenland-trump-denmark-us-infiltration-2119938

The Danish foreign minister has summoned the top U.S. diplomat in Copenhagen to explain a media report alleging that American nationals linked to President Donald Trump are attempting to infiltrate Greenland and run covert influencing operations there

...

DR had reported that at least three Americans with close connections to Trump were involved in the influencing operations, citing eight anonymous sources in both Denmark and the U.S., including government officials.

DR said it could not ascertain if the three men were working on their own initiative or given an official order, adding that they were being closely monitored by Danish authorities.

Trump told reporters in March that America will "go as far as we have to go" to gain control of Greenland. He also called U.S. ownership of the territory "an absolute necessity."

...

President Donald Trump, asked on March 29 if he would authorize the use of military force to take control of Greenland, told NBC News: "I don't take anything off the table."

One of DR's sources, who declined to be identified, said: "What we are seeing is the use of soft power, influence and attempts to create internal discord."

This is at least the second time the US ambassador has been summoned over this regime’s subterfuge. I totally missed this story about US spying on Greenland from back in May: https://archive.is/3RKbH

Part of what makes this so sticky is DJT’s penchant for using non-official MAGA world proxies all over the world. There’s a long tradition of outsourcing extremely sensitive and complex stuff when it makes strategic sense, but when that is done well, non-official people are tightly linked and coordinated with the official world. And it’s almost never done for things this.

There’s been less chaos and confusion in the second term but it’s still an issue. This sounds like a Marx Brothers version of the Russian way of business.
