Sark just clarified the delay of game on Coburn on Rewind.  He said it was "abruptly moving too hard on the defensive line".  I watched the play again. Just before the ball is snapped Coburn and the player to his left rise up, move to their right one step and switch to the left hand on the ground.  The ref immediately throws a flag.  I have never seen this called at any level of football in my life.  I am guessing that was the players adjusting to the offensive line gap.

What the absolute fuck? How is that a penalty?

Now, how does that compare to last year’s non-call against Baylor, when Dicker was hit?

Sark has faults, but I’m hesitant to take a stand, because among all of his missteps are a whole lot of refereeing screw jobs.

Football is a game of skill and aggression. Aggression is how less skilled teams compete. The rules are there, for safety, to put a limit on aggression. If the game is called so that one team is allowed a little more contact after the whistle, to bump and hold receivers a little more, to grab pass rushers a little harder, they are effectively given a “cheat code” to overcome a skill gap. That’s not insignificant. Years ago, when Brown had the team winning over 10 per year, you could point to one or two games per year where a weaker opponent was just barely edged- and the games were called evenly. Let the officials extend a few opponent drives and take away a few Texas gains, and see if those teams look more 8-4 than 10-2. (I’d like to see how the TCU game ends if the officials call the hold on Wiley, don’t reward the TCU punter for flopping and call dpi on a
couple of plays where the Frog DBs run through Worthy and Sanders).

I’d like to rate Sark on his performance, but I really want to get out of this conference more. For me, the officiating biases are making it harder to enjoy the games.

while this is true I'd rather have him run up on the ref screaming and get tossed then squatting down like he's taking a shit and stare off into space

grow some balls and call the rigged dogshit officials out

Just wanted to chime in about something I’ve never seen before.

During the Tech-KU game last week Tech was flagged for an OPI penalty from the previous play.

Yes, you read that correctly, the previous play.

Both teams were at line of scrimmage, all subs had been made, and then right before the ready to play signal, the line judge throws his flag for OPI

Tech went from 2nd and short to 1st and 25

Said that the completion on previous play was beyond LOS, not behind, so OPI

Ok, but why throw the flag then?

There was no huddle amongst the zebras immediately after the play to confirm it - dude waited until a split second before the snap of the ball on the next play to drop the flag.

Herman’s boys had this done to them twice in a short span. From the replay booth.

Can’t really explain either situation.

The black box of how/when replay is deployed is one of the most maddening things in college football.

Like it seems sometimes when there is a completely and totally obvious thing that needs to be reviewed, they just sit on their hands... other times on like an obvious catch we have to stop the game and spend 5 minutes looking at the reply of the obvious catch before we rule it a catch.

We had it done two or three times after they reviewed the play specifically to make that determination. No flag before the review.

While it's bullshit, we don't feel sorry for you. That's the shitty Big 12 officiating we are constantly the victims of.

Yeah, need some true leadership to get it better. But as I’ve come to realize on this board and in the real life world, good luck getting a group of dumbasses to agree and make it significantly better.

There’s no true need for the head guy to run across the field for some of the stuff you reference. Use up TV timeouts for more reviews. Lots of small things that’d ultimately improve it. For me, if it’s so close that it takes you five minutes, roll with the original call. As I fan I can be pissed, but if it’s that close, ultimately the call on the field is understandable.

Yeah and the other thing is that the constant reviews are just an absolute beating when you're at a game in person.

Watching on TV at least you can see the reviews, hear from the Dean Blandino or whomever... in the stadium you just have sit there and wait for the dipshits to figure it out.

Yes. And you’re often left wondering what just happened. See Alabama, safety, non-safety.

I will say as I’ve aged understanding the angle is a huge deal is important. You see things differently in person than on Tv. And more understanding of bang-bang plays missed.

I think they do that on purpose.  So that people think they are not just looking at porn in the booth instead of watching the game.

Sonny Dykes will bring more flopping to the B12.

Sonny Dykes can gargle my fucking balls.

Matt Campbell used to me the most irritating coach in the Big 12 to me with his sideline temper tantrums, but Sonny Dykes took it to the next level in our game earlier this year when he basically threw a crying shit fit with the refs because he doesn't understand how the defensive substitution rule works... so much so that the dipshit refs started essentially actively not letting us sub on defense when they would sub on offense with like 10 seconds left of the play clock.

I'm assuming he was doing that late offensive subbing Mickey Mouse shit at SMU and none of the other coaches were smart enough to hold their subs until he subbed late, thus causing a delay of game on the offense.  So when Gundy started doing it he lost his shit and even cried about it to the sideline reporter going into halftime.

Fuck him.

This is a known issue. The NCAA has asked the rules committee to review the defensive substitution rules this offseason.  It was already changed last offseason.

Last year the umpire would put the ball into play quicker at a low play clock, but the defense was allowed to have their players leave the field after the snap if they were within a stride of the sideline and did not impact the play.  The issue with this was the judge calling "technically correct" 12-men penalties when the umpire thought it was okay to play.

This year the umpire is holding the ball until substitution is complete as long as the defense is substituting with haste and not causing additional delay, which is an impossible determination for the umpire.  There is no longer a grace window for the defense.  They have to be completely off the field.

The leading idea going forward is putting the ball into play a set amount of time after the offense completes its substitution.  That way both teams know how much time they have, and there's less room to work the officials or try to game the system.

Well, Dykes spent a timeout chewing out the refs in our game to the extent that we got called for roughing the kicker on a play where their punter flopped and we didn't even touch him.

Maybe our coach should try this instead of looking constipated with eyes on his play sheet.

Yeah but what happened in our game was that TCU just kept subbing with like 10-12 seconds left on the play clock and then we would sub and Dykes was losing his shit because the refs literally weren’t just letting them snap it as soon as THEY were ready even though we had guys running on/off the field.  After Dykes whined and cried about it all first half, the refs literally started letting them snap it without any delay in the second half. It was literally not giving us a chance to sub when they did.  Fucking dipshit refs.

Dykes is the son of old Texas football with decades of coaching experience at the HS ranks, he will get what he wants.  And he knew exactly what he was doing with the late subs and the flopping.

The Texas /OU football officiating butt fucking started when we announced SEC.  Texas has been fucked the most, Now OU is reaping the whirlwind.   Big 12 refs come up with game changing obscure horse shit calls more often than in the Strong days.  These sorry ass refs found out that they could get away with it with the Big 12 office, so they went all in.
