What would y’all do to motivate the police? If your children wanted to be policemen in Austin, what would you tell them about the job? Would those words encourage such a career?

Do your children enjoy sugary breakfast treats and watching YouTube videos in an idling car?

Some stuff I looked up:

How much does an Austin Police Officer make?

Base Pay:

  • While in academy, $60,000 per year.  After graduation, base pay rises to $70,644
  • After 1 year, base pay rises to $79,277
  • After 2 years, base pay rises to $87,498
  • After 10 years, base pay hits $100,176 .. and tops out at $118,132

Officers can earn overtime pay and other pay stipends based on language skills, certifications, education, etc.  These might add $10,000 or so to base pay, for those that qualify.

This job requires a high school diploma or GED, US citizenship, a drivers license, the ability to read, write and speak English, and either 12 semester hours of college credit or 2 years in the military or two years of work experience.  You have to be 20.5 years of age to enter the academy.  You can graduate high school, work two years somewhere, and you are good to apply.

The job comes with health benefits and a pension.  Officers get 150 hours of vacation, 150 hours of sick leave, 88 hours of holiday leave, three personal holidays and 16 hours of wellness leave.  Officers work four 10 hour days in a row, then have three days off.  At 10 hrs per day, they have about 43 days of leave per year, if you add up all of their vacation/sick/personal/etc.  They can take an additional 120 hours for military leave.

Most of my data is from here: https://www.austintexas.gov/apdrecruiting/pay-benefits

How dangerous is it to be an Austin Police Officer?

I could not find data on officer injuries, but the city lists 29 officers killed in the line of duty from 1875-2025:

https://www.austintexas.gov/page/officers-killed-line-duty

I count eleven that were killed by gun violence and fourteen killed in a vehicular collision.  One had a heart attack.

Three were killed by COVID in Fall 2021, which was after vaccines were rolled out.  Either they didn't get the shot or were unlucky.

The police department has about 1500 officers.  It's possible to die on the job as a police officer, but it's not common.  You are as likely to be killed in a crash as you are by a gun.

This is a management problem, not a motivation problem.

If you make a job shitty enough, no amount of pay is going to encourage the right kind of people to take it and perform well in it.

I think some of y’all just have low standards and would rather pay through the nose and passively accept whatever you get than demand responsive, effective, professional policing.

At least when there’s a salad scandal to complain about, amirite?

City licensed it to them.  SMU is kind of especially getting its ox gouged by the rapper, since they're both selling a lot of apparel, but to two distinct markets that don't necessarily want to be identified together.

I don't know about that. I think SMU football is plenty cool in the hood - or at least becoming that way.

Our starting QB won a state title for South Oak Cliff - which - excluding Carter - was DISD's first title in like 60 years. By a quick count there are 13 players on the roster just from South Dallas (SoC, Duncanville, DeSoto, Skyline). I know they do a ton of outreach to underprivileged schools and I'm sure they give out a ton of merch. They used to give out a bunch of tickets to those kids, too (not sure if they still do with it being a harder ticket now).

SMU football has put it a ton of effort and done a good job with community outreach. The city of Dallas logo is a big part of that. Think they are wearing those unis this week against Baylor.

Dallas rapper Zillionaire Doe pregame lol. (I know this is off topic so apologies - but it's a good follow up)

The font is good. Ditch the "A" design and replace it with some kind of Star and Rotunda thing and call it a day. PM me for my inbound wire info, and I expect the taxpayer to cover the bank fees.

Sure. Like I said, plenty of bases for criticism. But “woke.” Just stupid.

was it done because people complained about the cross?  I’ve seen that online, no idea if it’s true.

It’s legit terrible logo design for anything.

Consider it done; you’re also ugly

This. This is like the very open secret that nobody wants to talk about. Even a lot of cops are frustrated about it. And there’s no appetite to take it on.  It they do, it’s quite likely the State Gov will basically gut the homerule charter.

But make no mistake: our police do not police this city well. Even when asked, or especially when asked. Want to see 10 cops? Send a landscape truck across Tarrytown after 7pm. Want to see no cops? Call them when your car gets stolen.

My mother in law had her house broken into by two men, house trashed and her car stolen, neighbor basically assaulted trying to stop the car theft. Thank God they weren't home that night.  Ring doorbell has clear fucking video of both dudes. The neighbor called 911 after almost being run over (that's also on video). Guy stole my father in law's fucking cowboy hat (for some reason more insulting than the car, I can't explain why honestly) drove the car into another neighborhood and wrecked it because he was drunk off all the Still whiskey my in laws had and ran off. Those people in that neighborhood also called the cops.

Police response? None until 11pm the next fucking night. They were apparently told to fuck right off by the father in law.

Damn.  So many questions

  • where is Austin did this take place?
  • So they broke in, drank a bunch of booze, then exited smashed - which even with strong stuff, can take a little while
  • Then hammered, stole the car and crashed it
  • Are they still at large?

I never even noticed there was a cross on the old logo until today.

Per the interwebz, it was a Maltese or heraldic cross, borrowed from European heraldic motifs conveying strength and guardianship, connection and unity

The more you know....

South austin

They broke in trashed the place, slept in beds, took showers, drank a bunch of booze and probably did some drugs. We found one of those torch lighters while cleaning up the place, and waiting all afternoon for a police cruiser to show up to take a report.

Yeah only one of them stole the car but he crashed it. My mother in law found that out on next door if you can believe it

Well they were never considered by the police for this pretty invasive crime. I have no idea where they are.

I worked for the city for many years, my old man worked for the city his entire career. I’ve had various personal items around my whole life that had the logo on it. I’ve never once noticed there was a cross. Who even looks at this shit? Who fucking cares? The old logo is boring, the new one is, I guess technically, a logo. I don’t believe anybody actually gives a shit one way or the other. They just want to complain and call things woke because they heard somebody else complain and call it woke. We live amongst sad losers with nothing better to do than bitch online

The new logo looks like the logo for a city operated trash and recycling company.

I do appreciate the inclusion of the Y in Oak Hill tho.

Somehow that’s Garza’s fault according to this board.
Meanwhile FIVE police officers were available to mostly watch a sixth officer search one handcuffed woman and her car on Pershing the other day.
Before they let her go, I mean

Seriously.   Story, after story, after story, of APD's "policing" priorities (or lack thereof).  And they not only get to skate, they get our sympathy and support....because Garza ALSO sucks.

Fucking insanity.

They both suck.  Downplaying Garza's shittiness just because the APD sucks is no less insane.

Except....none of us, not a single one of us, has downplayed Garza's shittiness.  We've openly and repeatedly called it out.  Only one of those two enterprises (Garza and APD) is getting a pass around here, and it ain't Garza.  Read the thread.

Ain’t nobody downplaying shit. APD was inept long before him, and will be long after him. He’s somehow shittier than rosemary.

I've read this thread many times.  There's plenty of "yeah but" type of defense of Garza, and APD is constantly getting shit on by you and a dozen others.  And deservedly so, APD sucks.

Acting like a couple of posters are speaking for the masses in defending APD is silly.  It's not anywhere close to a majority, it's a tiny minority.  Read the thread.

I've read it.  APD gets a free pass, because you can't expect them to do their job when Garza sucks and also he's mean to them.  "Would YOU want to be a cop in Austin?", attributing the implied "no" functionally entirely to the fact that we have a shitty DA.

The "yeah but" is no defense of Garza.  It's pointing out that some of the problems people are bitching about aren't tied to the shitty DA at all.  The DA doesn't decide not to send units to a crime report, APD does that all on its own.  Plenty of excusing APD and blaming it on Garza, or at least "it's not APD's fault":

Quote

Police refusing to respond to calls or take down incident reports due to either short staffing or fatigue due to lack of prosecution also skews the numbers.

.....

APD is absolutely understaffed.

APD has encouraged people to utilize 311 for anything not deemed a critical emergency.

Yes, a couple of posters say stuff like that.  And a dozen more do not.

Acting as if a couple of people represent the masses is a silly strawman and I'm not sure why you're bothering to spend the time to set it up.  Far more people shit on APD on this thread and all the others, than defend it.

One difference though, is that Austin voters aren't voting for the police chief, but they are voting for the DA.
