Week 3 2023: Wyoming @ Texas

Wulaw Horn

Recommended Posts

Fresh off the biggest win in the program since beating Georgia in the Sugar Bowl, Texas plays host to Wyoming.
The Horns come in ranked #4 in the country.
Wyoming is 2-0 with a win over Tech. That’s probably enough to get a Big 12 invite nowadays.
Look to see if Texas can continue to play to a standard that they set against Alabama.
Looking forward to it- post your game week thoughts here.

Wyoming plays tough. That’s basically one of their biggest assets. Another is playing in Laramie, which isn’t relevant this weekend. The final asset is the coaching.

On the liabilities side, they’re small, slow and lack talent. The QB is basically their offense.

I assume they’re going to try to shorten the game to extreme levels and hope their defense can get a few stops. I think 27 points is a tough line. Just hoping Texas shows up ready and plays a clean and injury-free game, getting out to the tune of 35-7.

Texas likely prepped that Alabama game for months. We're hitting the stretch now where they have to install weekly against opponents who want that notch in their pistol grip. In Sark's lexicon, we gotta be intentional with prep every minute of every day and be consistent. We as fans had better be loud at home.

Having said that, Wyoming will wilt in this heat...

Burnt Orange: 42

Burnt to a crisp Cowboy: 12

Bonus points, we see Arch and Maalik.

The Wyoming QB threw for 149 yards against Tech and 201 against something called Portland State.  Looks like they had about 170 yards rushing in both games.  Jump ahead and make them pass and it'll be ugly for them (sack or int).

Peasley might be out.

He was apparently icing his shoulder in the 4th quarter and wasn't available for the postgame media session. He took an absolute beating against Texas Tech.

Isn't the backup a huge guy that just runs QB power and can't pass?

From reading the replies to that tweet, it sounds like he just hands the ball off the RBs.

I'm sure Bohls is probably hesitant to play Peasley if he's banged up. He's a run first QB that's likely going to take some licks against Texas. Is it worth losing your starting QB for the year in a game you have a low probability of winning?

Wyoming is legitimately decent on defense but their offense is a dreadful matchup against Texas’s defense. I expect this will look a lot like the Rice game with Wyoming throwing the kitchen sink at Texas on defense and having some intermittent success early, but their offense won’t amount to much. And as CTJ alluded, they don’t get the 7k foot elevation advantage. Texas will pull away by the third quarter. Hopefully we can see a lot of depth reps including Arch.

It took a lot going their way to beat Tech. Tech missed 3 field goals.

Tech did have a sequence in the middle of the game to the second to last drive where they went: interception, punt, punt, missed FG, punt, missed FG, missed FG. Pretty hard to do.

My edit here is that if Peasley can’t play, this game is over before it started. They won’t score a point.

Texas will have much more of the playbook available this week than what we showed week 1. I would not be surprised to see a slow start from the good guys, but the talent difference is much to great for Wyoming to overcome. If Peasley is out, or greatly limited, Texas covers in a big way. With Peasley, I think they might keep it closer...maybe 37-16

As a Craig Bohl team they do fundamentals of football pretty well.  Blocking and tackling.   Their offensive line is pretty good for their level of football and they caved in what was supposed to be a good Tech DL multiple times in that game.  On defense they could not hang with Techs receivers but their pressure packages puts hits on Shough and made it not a fun game for him.  They do have one receiver with P5 speed - Asante - and of course the QB (if he plays) is a gritty, saavy player with decent speed, good accuracy, and no fear.

This is a buckle your chinstrap game against a hard nosed bunch with not a lot of athletes but a bunch of football players.

If we are taking sark at his word, he said he meant to get arch some snaps in the rice game but the 4th went by too quickly.

Yeah, that was probably the plan before Rice went on a 9.5 minute TD drive in the 4th quarter.  We had the ball for 5 whole minutes.

Craig Bohl or Kurt Bohl?

These guys beat the most beloved team in the Big 12, so you have to take them seriously.  I mean, the Tech players were probably somewhat slowed down by Yormark's insistence on fellating each of them personally during the game, but the scoreboard doesn't lie.  Yormark was exhausted when that game went to multiple OTs.
