It's the bye week. Who do you root for in these rivalries?

For one week it's the offseason, so time for a very offseason thread. Who do you cheer for in these rivalries? No meteors allowed.

  • Army vs. Navy
  • Alabama vs. Auburn
  • Michigan vs. Ohio State
  • USC vs. Notre Dame
  • Florida vs. Georgia
  • Miami vs. Florida State
  • Cal vs. Stanford
  • Oregon vs. Washington
  • Arkansas vs. Texas A&M
  • Mississippi State vs. Ole Miss

My votes:
Navy, Auburn, Michigan, USC, Florida, Miami, Stanford, Washington, Arkansas, Ole Miss

I could be swayed on about half those depending on the situation (e.g. Army/Navy, Cal/Stanford, UO/UW and MSU/Ole Miss)

Since the meteor option was out, a few of them were difficult.  Not the aggy/arkie one though.

For me its all about the hate:

  • Army vs. Navy- will watch, but won't root for one or the other
  • Alabama vs. Auburn- hate bama, don't really care about Auburn, so rooting for Auburn
  • Michigan vs. Ohio State- hate both, but hate Ohio state so much more
  • USC vs. Notre Dame- fuck em both, but fuck notre dame more
  • Florida vs. Georgia- hate for florida outweighs hate for georgia.
  • Miami vs. Florida State- meteor
  • Cal vs. Stanford- meh, won't wathc
  • Oregon vs. Washington-also meh, but slight lean to Washington, just because the ducks' uniforms are fugly.
  • Arkansas vs. Texas A&M- piggy, fuck aggy always and forever
  • Mississippi State vs. Ole Miss- and another meh, won't watch

@TxEx84 why not the meteor?

Navy, I guess? I don't really care but have a bit more Navy in my family.

Barn

Michigan

Eh. Whichever one fucks the other's season up more I guess. Generally I think I lean ND, though.

Pretty much this but that's just because Arkansas has been so horrible since joining the SEC.  Back in the old SWC days I would only root for the A&M/Arkansas winner that helped UT the most.

Usually I just do stuff on Saturday that I have put off because of the football season, and Port A fishing.  But it's always more about dislikes primarily, but I will occasionally root for a tea mI don't particularly like, but they are such big underdogs, I can tacitly root for. them.

  • Army vs. Navy (for Grandad)
  • Alabama vs. Auburn (for our power ranking)
  • Michigan vs. Ohio State (liked their helmets as a kid, and Ohio Staters are shit knuckle dragging fans)
  • USC vs. Notre Dame (for the alter boys)
  • Florida vs. Georgia. (Dad swam for them)
  • Miami vs. Florida State (even though my folks met at FSU, a loss here helps my boys)
  • Cal vs. Stanford  (smarter players)
  • Oregon vs. Washington. (honestly don't give a fuck)
  • Arkansas vs. Texas A&M (gotta choose the toothless that have actually won something other than an internet poll)
  • Mississippi State vs. Ole Miss (the slightly classier racists)

OK - well that was a fun waste of 3 minutes!

Army vs. Navy
Alabama vs. Auburn
Michigan vs. Ohio State
USC vs. Notre Dame - Usually USC because it's one of the few games Notre Dame actually plays someone and they tend to need this loss to end their postseason discussion
Florida vs. Georgia
Miami vs. Florida State
Cal vs. Stanford
Oregon vs. Washington
Arkansas
vs. Texas A&M - because Arkansas is generally terrible
Mississippi State vs. Ole Miss

  • USC vs. Notre Dame - USC
  • Florida vs. Georgia - Chaos
  • Miami vs. Florida State - FSU
  • Cal vs. Stanford - Never watched this game once
  • Oregon vs. Washington - Oregon, generally, but probably the underdog
  • Arkansas vs. Texas A&M - Piggy by a landslide
  • Mississippi State vs. Ole Miss - MSU

I default to ag schools (with the one notable exception) underdogs, and whatever will fuck shit up the most on the big picture of the season.

  1. Does either team winning benefit Texas?  If yes, I root for them.
  2. If there is no benefit to Texas, is there a heavy underdog?  If yes, I root for them.
  3. If there is no benefit to Texas and there is not a heavy underdog, I do this:
  • Army vs. Navy | whichever has the best uniform that year (usually Navy)
  • Alabama vs. Auburn | least amount of historical relevance
  • Michigan vs. Ohio State | least amount of recent success, and I generally find Ohio State fans to be way more obnoxious
  • USC vs. Notre Dame | recent flip for me due to the Riley factor
  • Florida vs. Georgia | Florida feels less offensive than most SEC schools
  • Miami vs. Florida State | PTSD from 1991 Cotton Bowl is still there
  • Cal vs. Stanford | Directors Cup impact
  • Oregon vs. Washington | Phil Knight factor
  • Arkansas vs. Texas A&M | I loathe Arkansas, but I would be fine with A&M losing every game in every sport forever
  • Mississippi State vs. Ole Miss | Not sure why, but it's how it usually goes for me

  • Army vs. Navy: Dad was in Army and Grandpa in the Navy. May the best team win.
  • Alabama vs. Auburn: War Eagle. I get Bama will win and them winning helps us but I’m just not rooting for them.
  • Michigan vs. Ohio State: as crazy as Jim H is with his rolling and eating boogers I like Ohio State less.
  • USC vs. Notre Dame: don’t care. Neither team is CFP material but if I HAVE to choose I’d pick ND because Lincoln Riley is a twat
  • Florida vs. Georgia: Love to see Georgia get beat but I don’t think this is the team to do it. Again, don’t really care what happens
  • Miami vs. Florida State: Miami I guess? I mean again like most of the matchups this weekend I just don’t care
  • Cal vs. Stanford: sincerely idgaf. A tie would be nice.
  • Oregon vs. Washington: I have Washington in the CFPs
  • Arkansas vs. Texas A&M: Arky will likely get a new head coach after this year and I will never root for ATM. Reluctant for Arky just for watching Texags explode.
  • Mississippi State vs. Ole Miss: latent rooting for Leach’s old team. Miss Leach. Can’t stand Joey Freshwater.

Only games I care about another team winning are below.

Alabama vs. Auburn - I prefer Alabama's only regular season loss be Texas.

Miami vs. FSU - Hoping FSU gets a loss to potentially eliminate the ACC getting a playoff spot.

Oregon vs. Washington - Oregon looks pretty legit, I think Washington has the best chance taking them down and I don't see Washington going undefeated. I just want the Pac to cannibalize themselves. Leaving more room for Texas in the top 4.

Don't give a shit about Michigan vs Ohio State because one of those assholes is getting into the playoffs.

I apply several rules to determine my cheering interest in any game:

1) What benefits Texas.  No matter how attenuated or tenuous the connection may be, this is the overriding concern.

2) What hurts Oklahoma and/or aggy.  Fuck them.  So Arky over aggy.

3) Friends' alma maters.  So give me ND over USC and Miami over Florida State.

4) Personal interactions with fans.  So Michigan over Ohio State.  Fuck Ohio State--they're the worst.

5) Flagship schools over ag schools.  So Alabama over Auburn and Mississippi over Mississippi State.

6) Public schools over private schools.  So give me Cal over Stanford (to the extent I can muster any interest at all).

7) Chaos/Upsets

And after that, I'll just watch out of general interest.  Army/Navy falls into that category.  I'm not really going to cheer for one or the other.  Maybe I'll cheer for the underdog, but more likely I'll just cheer for the offenses to score touchdowns, because that's more fun.

  • Army vs. Navy                                -Father in law was a Navy pilot
  • Alabama vs. Auburn                    -Even though Bama winning helps us it hurts our recruiting so Auburn
  • Michigan vs. Ohio State           -Lived in Ohio. Fuck jorts and Hiney Gate
  • USC vs. Notre Dame                 -No real reason. The 78 Cotton was before my time
  • Florida vs. Georgia                    -Gainesville isn't bad. One of my best friends is a gator grad. Bull Gator deck is a great place to watch the game.
  • Miami vs. Florida State               -Coin toss came up FSU
  • Cal vs. Stanford                             -Fuck Aaron Rodgers bitchass
  • Oregon vs. Washington            -Always a fun team to watch
  • Arkansas vs. Texas A&M         - I don't care what would help Texas. I always root for aggy to lose. Always.
  • Mississippi State vs. Ole Miss  -Because I don't like hearing those cowbells. Even on TV.

For whatever reason I feel nice when the highlighted teams win their rivalry game. I am not sure why and I haven't thought too much about it. Just for whatever reason my heart decided it liked when Army wins. Sure my father and grandfather were both in the Army but it isn't like either attended West Point or even strongly considered doing so or even rooted for Army in this game.

The other games I have no particular feeling regarding who wins. Arkansas vs A&M just means one of them loses, which is good...but one of them also wins which is bad.

Edit: Obviously if the outcome of one of these games benefits Texas in some way that changes things.

Root for? Nope.

For most of these it's "tolerate at a slightly greater percentage if one team doesn't fuck up as much as the other."

Otherwise what Ghost of LL said and if not a meteor impact than other natural disaster: Category 5, F5, some sort of crippling Aurora Borealis at that time of year, at that time of day, at that part of the country localized entirely within that stadium.

So you're telling me that if Texas and Arkansas are both 5-1 in conference with Arkansas having beat the Longhorns and Arkansas is playing A&M you're not rooting for the Aggies, even if that means Arkansas moves on and leaves Texas at home?

Army vs. Navy - Grandpa was career Army and I grew up in the shadow of Fort Hood/Cavazos. Go Army! Beat Navy! Goat meat is what's for dinner.

Alabama vs. Auburn - The Super Bowl of Danielson drivel. Go whoever is the spoiler!

Michigan vs. Ohio State - Fuck 'em both, but especially Ohio State fans. On second thought, just fuck the whole state of Ohio.

USC vs. Notre Dame - Meteor

Florida vs. Georgia - There's a game? (hiccup)

Miami vs. Florida State - Doc! We Gotta Go Back to 1988!

Cal vs. Stanford - NERDS!!!! and some grainy video clip that every kindergartner has already seen.

Oregon vs. Washington - does this game matter if you don't wear flannel and hiking boots? Usually not, so kudos to this year.

Arkansas vs. Texas A&M - Bigger meteor with pinpoint accuracy that leaves a smoldering hole where Jerryworld and its piggy owner once stood.

Mississippi State vs. Ole Miss - No Pirate, No Cry. But no watch either unless I see its tied in the 4th.
