Texas liquor laws

Isn't the liquor store lobby one of the biggest opponents of being open on Sunday?

Yes.  There is lots of money involved in keeping the post-prohibition status-quo in place.  Three-tiered distribution system, limited on-site sales at breweries, vineyards, distilleries.  Attempts to limit chain liquor stores and online or mail-order sales.  One of my favorites is the TABC rule that you can't make alcohol seem to be "appealing" -- hence, it's a violation to advertise or promote beer as "cold beer."

You can’t buy beer/wine at Liquor stores in NC

Idiots everywhere

Yea that threw me off on a recent work trip to Charlotte. They also didn’t sell any sodas I was very confused. Out here in lovely California I’m good though, hit up the carniceria any day and grab a bottle

No "ale" exemption? I know you can't call it "beer" in Texas and it be over 5%. Unless that's changed.

It has been years since I was in Oklahoma.

Me, too.  I am behind the times.  It looks like they changed the law in 2018/19.  No more 3.2.  Full strength beer is now legal in OU Sucks.  I'm guessing that meth had gained a big competitive advantage over weak beer.

Indiana does not sell cold beer at grocery or convenience stores. You have to go to a liquor store to get cold beer.

So basically.... Dallas.

First time I was in Dallas (1990s) above 21 with a gf visiting her aunt and was going out to pick up food before coming back to watch the Cowboys game. She told me, "Pick up some beer, too." This was before cell phones.

I didn't know it was a dry county. I thought it was weird that Kroger didn't have beer, but thought maybe the crappy neighborhood had something to do with it. Then the next grocery store didn't have beer either. Then several gas stations without beer.

Eventually it became a mission to find beer no matter what. I got on 35 and got off every exit and looked around and then went to the next exit. The only reason I saw the liquor store was because cops were surrounding a car in the parking lot. Went in and got beer. That's when I was told it was a dry county and you can only get beer at liquor stores.

Finally made it back to the aunt's house almost 2 hours later. Gf had been getting worried but was trying not to alarm elderly aunt. She knew it was a dry county but forgot to tell me I had to go to a liquor store.

Grandfather got arrested in Goldthwaite for having 4 cases of beer heading to the deer lease. Told him he was a bootlegger.

Um, four cases of beer for 30 days for my grandfather was nothing. And it was Pearl so not like it was that strong.

WTF?  You Texans will be unable to buy booze for 61 hours over the holiday?

Why the fuck to you "freedom lovers" put up with this horseshit?

They need to revisit the closed on NYD bullshit, especially when NYE is on a Sunday. Really odd year where liquor stores were closed 122 hours on the holidays.

Damn, you fuckers scared the shit out of me. My flight isn’t getting in until 9:00pm Saturday and was worried I wouldn’t be able to pick up a 12 pack on the way home. So beer / wine from a normal store is still ok after 10:00 on Sunday, right?  The dumbass lege didn’t go full Taliban in the two weeks I was gone?

Utah still has the most fucked up liquor laws. I went to a nice beer bar in downtown Salt Lake. Got there and noticed they didn't have many taps, but had a ton of different beers in bottles. Because in Utah, beer on tap can only be 3%, but bottled beer can be full strength.

One of the people I was with asked the bartender, "What are your happy hour specials?" The bartender said, "There are no happy hours in Utah." I laughed thinking that he was joking, but apparently it's illegal to offer discounts on alcohol.

Pretty sure that Dallas dry stuff in the 1990s was at a precinct level within a county.  And yes, the big liquor retailers were very active politically to preserve those dry statuses so as to keep their stores located on the boundaries very profitable.

You should be good on beer/wine at normal hours at grocery stores this weekend.

The "every weekend" part.

The first time I saw a liquor store open on Sunday in Oklahoma I did a double take.

I clearly typed "This Coming Monday."  Where ON THIS COMING MONDAY, can you buy liquor in Texas?

Believe we still have a handful of Texas counties stuck in full on prohibition (Dry) a century later.

It’s Texas.  Earlier this year, the state tried to pass a law blocking people from looking at online porn unless they identified themselves using a Texas-issued ID.  Or used a VPN, but they were vowing to close that loophole.  Thankfully the courts and porn companies told them to fuck off.

Because we're a pro-liberty, pro-freedom state.  We let citizens make their own decisions without government interference.

Except gambling.  That's just wrong, the bible says so.  Except lottery/lotto and scratch-offs.  It's technically gambling, even more than blackjack and poker which at least entertain a modicum of strategy, because lottery/lotto and scratch-offs are run by the government.  Which is anti-gambling, even though it's the most illicit example of gambling.  But the money goes to schools.  Although it doesn't.  Ever.  But alcohol taxes are at least collected and distributed back to the people.  Which they are.  But for dry counties?  Local control and all.  Although, it's not really the case because they still receive apportionment from that general liquor tax fund back from TABC.  But we're a Free State dammit!  And there's marijuana.  And a whole other basket of tax issues there.  But yes, on New Year's Day, you can buy all the lottery tickets, cigarettes, table dances, assault rifles, and bowl game money lines you can afford and then some with vig.  But you cannot buy a pint of vodka.  Because Jesus said so very clearly in his letters to the Bourbonians.
