How Tesla is quietly rebranding the Cybertruck

When Tesla launched the Cybertruck in 2023, it was the product of four years of hype. The boxy electric pickup was the company's first new model since 2020. Kim Kardashian, Pharrell Williams, and Justin Bieber were spotted riding around in it. With a million people on the truck's reservation list and a $120,000 price tag, it quickly became a status symbol.

Less than two years later, the waitlist has disappeared. Trucks are piling up in sales lots. Fewer than 50,000 vehicles have been delivered. Some owners have become political targets thanks to CEO Elon Musk's association with President Donald Trump.

Enter a quiet rebrand.

Over the past few months, Tesla has moved to position the Cybertruck as a working man's vehicle — less DeLorean, more Ford F-150. The company updated its website, ditching an other-worldly aesthetic for images that feature the truck hauling equipment and an Airstream trailer. And sales workers at the company told Business Insider it's become increasingly difficult to move the truck off sales lots. The vehicle, they said, needs to appeal to the traditional truck buyer.

"Pitching it to truck people is more about the functionality," said one salesperson who works in the South. "They want to know how much it can tow, how much can fit in the truck bed."

———

Tesla has sold less than 50,000 Cybertrucks.  Last year, Ford sold 765,000 F-series, and in 2023 they sold 750,000.

Dumb motherfuckers usually don’t find out how dumb they are until they get a moment of clarity while bleeding out from some stupid fucking thing they did, or the bank is repossessing their mobile home, or their wife serves them with divorce papers because they were banging the kid’s babysitter, or when they are reeling from the aftershock of a police taser.

Huh.

I'm gonna suggest that as long as your enterprise is defined by and run based on the whims of a fucking psychopathic sociopathic fucking idiot who consistently responds to press inquiries with

f0f34e4bb5dc913d5288c67747f597fb.jpg

....then you're not going to make much progress on that front.

I, however, will happily offer my consulting services for the low-low price of $50 million (paid up front, of course):

"Brisketexan, how do we get people to stop thinking of X as a platform for psychopathic dicks, and start thinking of it as a platform that's not all about being a psychopathic dick?"

"Well....and you should write this down....first, your CEO and primary content creator should stop being a total psychopathic dick, and he should stop embracing and boosting his army of psychopathic dicks.  There is no 'next step.'  That's it.  Now, if you need me, I'll be at my villa in France, but don't bother calling, I won't answer."

How the fuck have they only sold 50 k of these fuckers, and are all of them in West Austin?. On any typical 8 mile drive to my project in Bee Cave I will see at least 10 of these fucking things.  A lot them are wrapped and several are wrapped with business logos.  How fucking niave do you have to be to advertise on one of these and think "this will help my business!"

Had a good laugh watching one of my clients neighbors get his into his garage.  Multi-point turn to approach garage, then all passengers had to get out because the pos barely fits. Never hauls or tows anything.  Nice guy; huge dork.

Considering Tesla has offices so close to Austin, I think it makes sense. Ive got 4-5 of them I see around my neighborhood here in Houston.

If a service provider showed up to my house driving one of those things, I would tell them to fuck right off and enjoy the newly found free time before their next appointment.

I know a guy who has a bright yellow rivian truck for this, first one I knew who had one. Made sense for him...but a CT is a bad business investment

Someone on this thread made the observation that you never see a woman in the passenger seat. It's always just a guy by himself. Since I read that I always look, and it's almost always the case. I did see a couple get out of one at HEB the other day. Mid-50s guy, short, bald, grey goatee, body by TRT, and his Asian wife/gf with giant fake tits and face full of fillers and botox.

I'm sure a little PR spin will help xitter as it circles the drain.

I don't know about the math here - I count closer to a 67% decline in total visits. In just 3 months.

Elon followed the Eskimo Hut (no relation) business model.

But he’s totally cool with the results: carving up liberal democracies, ending a global community organizing site, scattering legitimate journalists, and stifling voices from around the world.

That's accurate as hell in my experience,  I like when they look over and smile with both hands off the wheel. So cool.

Did see two on the side of the road broke down in the last week.

We went down to Oak Cliff for the Hamilton Leithauser show at The Kessler last night. The Tesla "dealership" near Love Field is on our way. Behind there is a massive lot with Teslas, mostly Cybertrucks. We've never seen it that full. Just rows and rows and rows of CTs.

The last time I was in Austin a couple of months ago, I saw an actual real-life woman driving one. She was turning right onto Oltorf from Lamar.

I flipped her the bird.

I've seen a woman more than once driving a cybertruck on Chicon. I didn't give her the bird because I think it's @safe sex.

pretty sure a poster here had a sister who bought a cybertruck. I’ve seen a woman in my area in Houston driving one too.

My sister did. Has a lot of buyer's remorse.

Got vandalized several weeks back as someone spray-painted "Nazi Fuck" on it. Pics of it made the rounds on Reddit.

They caught the guy as they were able to combine parking garage security camera footage with a rando's phone video. Some 50 year old father of two. I don't like them either, but what were you thinking dude?

Going to jail as the father of two daughters just because he hates your Nazi sister is certainly what I would consider a poor decision and misaligned priorities.

He should have worn a ski mask and a MAGA hat.

going to jail for vandalism spray paint would be pretty outrageous IMO. It's fuckin' stainless steel! Sandblast that shit and send it back out - it's EXTREMELY HARDCORE(!!!!) Dude should 100% be on the hook for remediation and any fines though

Wonder if there will be any vandalism once he rolls out the self-driving in Austin.

I guess we will find out somewhere around 2035 given his track record of over promising and under delivering. When that time does come, I wouldn’t be someone taking a dump in one.

Nothing to see here, just the US Government using tariffs as a bargaining chip to force acceptance of a service owned by someone high up within the administration.

Musk is the kind of guy, that if he finds out that brown-eyed people see in color, or he realizes that the USS Enterprise in Star Trek: The Next Generation, had three shifts, and that Data was the night shift because he needs no sleep, that Rike ran the morning shift, and that Picard ran the afternoon shift, he'd immediately go out on twitter and start telling everybody like that was some kind of new information, even though most of us of his generation knew these things back in the 90s or even late 80s.

What a fucking LOSER you are.  As I understood it, the only relevant TNG question was "Counselor Troi or Dr. Crusher?"

And of course, the correct answer was always "both."
