No it wasn't, but I don't think it was dumb either.  Here's a nice article that I think lays it all out really well.

It actually was, I Googled it before posting, so already knew the answer but was playing dumb for the Trump effect.

I'm in the process of car shopping so this particular tariff hits home.

Dotard’s still decent polls numbers….

About that.  The aggregators have him recently going underwater again.  There won't be a rebound, it's all downhill from here until water finds its natural low 40s level.

Yeah he’s purposefully destroying our country and his “natural level” will be above Biden’s when he left office. That is the problem.

Maybe I wasn't paying enough attention during the election, but I don't really remember any talk of annexing Canada, making all our allies fucking hate us, switching sides and supporting the invading country over our democratic ally, shutting down entire agencies illegally, dismantling our government, generally making us way less safe everywhere across the board.....

A lot of this was in Project 2025, I think.

More to this point, in my effort to avoid actual work today, I took the liberty of identifying which cars are made in Mexico and Canada, along with their 2024 sales vs the total cars sold in the US.  So, if you're like me and looking to buy a new car, these should probably be avoided.

I won’t be aggregating this data, but if you want some homework I’ll insist that other automakers that have plants in the USA source parts, I’m thinking primarily stamped body pieces but maybe not, from fabricators in Mexico and Canada to use at their plants in say marysville OH for accords, San Antonio tx for tundras and sequoias, whichever makers that I can’t recall off hand that are in Alabama and other places.  Feel like proving or disproving my assertion?

That's even too deep a rabbit hole for me.  I've got my list narrowed to a few Toyotas.  Two are made in Japan (4Runner & Land Cruiser) and one in Indiana (Highlander).  Looked it up and there is a non-zero chance the Highlander sources some parts from Canada, so I'll keep an eye on that one.

Not sure I ever disagreed with your assertion, so you'll have to remind me what your assertion is.

There *might* be a lag in the price of used cars since they're not subject to tariffs. If I were you, I'd find a year old car in whatever model you want and see if you can get it around blue book before everyone realizes they can jack up their used vehicles by 30% as well.

Well, in usual every accusation is an admission fashion, Trump did try to label Biden a war machine and himself the Peace Time President. In Republican MAGA rhetoric that is translated to Trump will be a war machine and people will wish the Peace Time President Biden was still in the White House.

Feeling a lot better about pulling the trigger on my Land Cruiser three weeks ago. It’s my understanding that all Land Cruisers and 4Runners are still being made in Japan and shipped.

So dumb.

Even dumber is that Canada as “the 51st state” would immediately become the most-populous state in the US, therefore it would have more representatives (and EC votes) than even California.

I did not have “borders are artificial constructs” on my MAGA bingo. Some real monkeys paw shit there.

Guess we should have made that border squiggly for no reason.  Wonder if anyone has told him yet that the ere have been disputes over that border previously and that Detroit was once Canadian.

I can't believe this motherfucker is actually going to invade Canada.

The only thing left is going to be what US citizens do when that happens?

It depends. How will 401ks react?

Trump voters really are just about a narrow prism of perceived self interest. If they think it won’t affect or benefits them, it won’t matter.

As for the rest of us, I’m as curious as you are. For the record, though, I seriously doubt Trump invades Canada.

If we declare war on another country I guarantee you the stock market is going to fucking cut in half or more. So, they'll react badly.

Listen, I know Trump was going to break the known world, but I didn't think Canada would make the cut. But here we are, and if there's one thing that's true, that stubborn narcissist will literally try to invade just because he felt slighted other countries said no. If you're big bad America, they'll let you do anything. You just grab them by the tariff and then 51st state them. He'll fucking try to invade just to prove a point.

So how long until we announce “military exercises” along the northern border and pinky swear that Canada has nothing to worry about?

Don't worry Canada.  We're just storing these M1A2 Abrams tanks in northern Montana, North Dakota and Minnesota while we clean out the garages in Texas, New Mexico and Kansas.

The motherfucker has to be planning something big with Canada. And even if he isn’t but wants to bully them, how the fuck does that strengthen our alliances? Any MAGAts want to explain that one to me?

Oh, don't you worry.  The talking points are being disseminated as we speak, and the nightly Fox, OAN and Newsmax lineup of talking heads will be sure to reiterate these thoroughly.  There will be members of congress explaining, on air, that Canada is a threat to the United States, and they need to be dealt with.  Followed up with countless posts on Facebook explaining how, yes, Canada is not worthy of existence, and yes, we need military action ASAP.

It's infuriating, but the thing to keep in mind is that these polls are essentially lagging indicators, because the majority of those polled don't pay much (if any) attention and have no idea what's going on yet.  There's no constituency outside of Trump's really rabid base of support for a trade war (or an actual shooting war) with Canada. That might change as he escalates shit and really ramps up the propaganda to support an invasion, but I doubt it.

He really should have started with Mexico. The American people would've been a lot more likely to tolerate this shit with them.

He knows he can't start that shit with Mexico. Mexico can stomach hitting the US in ways Canada isn't likely to do. As much shit as trump has talked with regards to Mexico over the last decade, ask yourself what has he ever actually followed through with them? He knows they'll call his bluff and he wants none of it.

Hopefully Canada surprises him and tells him to fuck off. Right now anti trump is the one thing that can rally Canadian patriotism to war time levels of personal sacrifice to harm an enemy.

Trump: I’m not allowed to drive because I haven’t driven a car in a long time. I love to drive cars. But I’m going to have it at The White House and I’m going to let my staff use it. I’m not allowed to use it

Nothing we have done these last six weeks strengthens us. In fact just the opposite. Everything we have done, however, is fucking great for Russia. Like beyond their wildest dreams.

If only someone could put these two things together and make it make sense.
