Man, I am not trying to overstep here but the banning and negging aren't my favorite. We can never have a decent back and forth here because people who disagree are too afraid to say anything for fear of what just happened. If someone gets out of pocket maybe we could handle it through DM?

He has nothing to say, man. He has proven time and time again he is incapable of engaging in an honest discussion. He will just repeat whatever he has convinced himself of until he flies off the handle and starts doing weird shit like going after people's families like with Jimmy.

He's almost certainly posting that woman's nudes on a public message board without consent and it's really fucking weird.

The American inability to see anything from a perspective other than their own is top-notch.  Think of all of the discussions we've had over the years ("what do you mean people don't have a driver's license?  You need an ID to even get on a plane!"  Yeah, dudes...a huge percentage of Americans never have and never will fly anywhere).

And to be fair, we're all guilty of it to some extent, but having a decent society starts with acknowledging and accepting that you have a limited perspective.  It goes in all directions, by the way.  I remember in law school, talking to one of my new students casually about me going hunting the next week - she was from Brooklyn.  "You have a gun????"  I mean....yeah, I have several.  "What the hell?  What is wrong with you?  Do you shoot people?  Why do you have so many guns?"  Her perspective - minority female from Brooklyn -- was WAY different than mine, 5th generation Texan with rural roots.  It was beyond conception to her for anyone to own a gun for any reason OTHER than "you're a criminal up to no good."  It was a little eye-opening for me.  I'd seen plenty of zero perspective, limited thinking from conservative types, but I was seeing it from a more left-leaning person.  And yeah, I saw a lot more of it over the years.

But starting from a point of "so.....the experience of a black person growing up 40 years ago was significantly different than my experience" is damned helpful.  But, you know, we're colorblind, and we're all Americans and whatnot, and why you gotta be so divisive?

I try my best to imagine the perspective from other cultures. I think about how it must feel to see minorities be able to proclaim ethnic pride while white people have to sit that one out.

Here's the deal -- she's in a band that's trying to make it big.  I'm proud and I support them and I promote them.  I get it.  That's on ME.  Come after ME for being a helicopter dad or whatever.  But I have never brought my kids' politics into the discussion.  In fact, I have (truthfully) asserted that we always let them find their own way in that regard.  Do we speak our mind?  Fuck yeah we do.  Dinner can get really fun.  But I will NEVER chastise my kid for having a differing opinion, especially if they back it up.

And that's why I said she would kick Rex's ass in a debate.  She's done it to me many times.

I agree with you (although Rex's negging and DM stunt with Imma appears to be what got him suspended -- he was being stupid with that).  I'd like more good-faith discussion.  But here's a thing that's happened in the last decade plus: "good-faith" conservative folks are an endangered species.  The entire ethos has become a cult based on trolling and treating anyone not in the preferred group like absolute shit (in other words, following the model of Trump), so....how do you have a good-faith conversation with that?  You don't.

Deep down I know this is the case but I keep holding out hope.

He got banned for a week cuz he kept reporting posts for no reason and then said he would just keep spam reporting until "you do something about it" so I did something about it. I banned him and revoked access to the site not just removed posting privileges.

I legit think he was having some sort of mental health issue today.

So the school name is false advertising.

It often manifests itself as a free admission that Trump is an asshole, but a tendency to deny that he's really a fascist with valid comparisons to historical fascists and also denial that there aren't any redeeming Republicans left, and almost no valid Republican ideas.

It’s not a terrible point. If you somehow have a shred of decency left and are coming to terms that identifying as a present-day conservative means that you support full-on authoritarianism, I can see how one could be ashamed or angry or find it difficult to embrace that you’ve stumbled into supporting fascism. That said, I don’t see those folks stepping up and saying, “man, I got that shit super wrong” and examining their beliefs. Instead we see them saying “I didn’t vote for this, but I still support you Mr. President!”

Remember even if they come to grips with the fact they are completely useless pieces of shit, ‘tan pants / spicy mustard’ are firmly engrained in their tiny brains.  So yes they’ll possibly question whether or not they’re the second coming of Christ, but the other side is still pedo pizza parlor LLC.

I'm curious what a "good faith" position could possibly be in support of what's happening right now. What's a legitimate good faith reponse to "Donald Trump says Harvard can no longer enroll International students and will deport all current International students." Or "Trump lies to South African President's face about white genocide with false photographs." What about the merits of whether habeus corpus means the president can deport anyone for any reason? Even with immigration policy where there can be legitimate debate on how to manage the influx of persons from Mexico and Central America, how can a discussion be held when their opening position is a blatant lie about Biden having an "open border" and that immigrants are all rapists and murderers? There aren't any more William F. Buckleys left just Ted Cruz and MTG saying nonsense and lies. About the best I can come up with is Rand Paul who has at least seemed to stay consistent on opposing spending and deficits even if it means criticizing the current administration. If Surly and Texags were one website do you think the conversations would be legitimate debates? I just don't see it. I'm with you in being sad about it but I don't see Surly being an "echo chamber" when the majority here is just speaking truth (or at least political truths within reason) while everything else is just blatant lies and hatred for libs and "others."

So, we've accepted that plane. That we'll have to spend a billion dollars on in order to turn it into a functional Air Force One. And by "we", I mean we. Taxpayer money. Anyway, it will take years to accomplish this. So long in fact that it may not even be completed by the time Trump leaves office (yeah, I know). At which point he gets to keep it.

So to recap: The American taxpayers are paying a billion dollars for Trump to accept an airplane illegally, that he may not even use as Air Force One, but that he will own when he leaves office.

Trump administration bars Harvard from enrolling international students

The Trump administration on Thursday revoked Harvard University’s ability to enroll international students, delivering a sharp punishment to the elite institution for refusing to bow to the administration’s policy demands.

“Harvard can no longer enroll foreign students and existing foreign students must transfer or lose their legal status,” the US Department of Homeland Security said in a statement.

Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem ordered her department to terminate Harvard’s Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP) certification, citing the university’s refusal to turn over the conduct records of foreign students requested by the DHS last month.

The decision could impact more than a quarter of Harvard’s heavily international student body, who have been flung into anxiety and confusion by the announcement. Professors warn a mass exodus of foreign students threatens to stifle the academic prowess of the institution even as it battles against the administration for its ideological autonomy.

On the bright side. More asian kids will get in to Harvard, not having to compete against smart ferreners.

Federal judge blocks Trump administration from ending legal status for foreign students attending US schools

A federal judge on Thursday blocked the Trump administration on nationwide from terminating the legal status that allows foreign students to study at colleges and universities in the US.

The preliminary injunction issued by US District Judge Jeffrey White of the federal district court in San Francisco is the latest major blow to the efforts by the administration to target international students as it seeks to carry out President Donald Trump’s mass deportation campaign.

The case concerns a sweeping maneuver by the administration to tamper with student records – known as SEVIS records – of immigrants who are in the US on education visas, putting them in jeopardy of deportation.

Boeing is having trouble delivering in time because of all the stuff needed to outfit it to be Air Force One. So take a new plane from Qatar that needs to outfitted by Boeing to be Air Force One. Makes perfect sense.

one of the reports hilariously demanded we (mods) do something about people "making stuff up about [him]" then his "threat" was "if yall don't do anything about this then I'll leave and please delete my account."

I think the guy was having a day. I've had a few on the boards so I kinda get it
