Flash and HDD storage are going to be cheap cheap cheap for BF, but the bottom may be further down. If you can get anything for sub $60/TB of flash or $12.50/TB for HDD you should probably buy it.

How does one parse the $500 laptops when one does not really know how specs affect performance?
Buying for kids, previously on chromebooks, and primary use will be school work.  Little to no gaming.

Costco has an HP with 16g memory and 1tb storage for that price, plus their 2 year warranty.   As good as anything?  Wait for Monday deals?

Do you really need/want anything beyond a Chromebook?  If you aren't gaming or doing video/photo editing or something that involves a particular app, I'd just stick with Chromebooks.  No muss, no fuss.  And if they want to turn into budding coders/geeks, can enable Linux and install just about anything Linux offers.

But, for general Windoze, I'd think at least 8GB of RAM and i5 or better, currently 14th gen, so probably back to 11th or 12th is satisfactory.  Probably 256GB minimum disk.  Then there's screen res, touch screen, backlit keyboard.

I remember when I laughed about how much memory an early hard drive had compared to a floppy disk.

I still often think about the 128k of memory in my first Macintosh.

And those initial black & white Macintosh games were the shit.  To this day NOTHING has been more addictive to my little monkey brain.

They've actually come down quite a bit from their peak a year ago. A 5070TI is like $600, down from $950ish, and you can get a 5060 for $250ish and be set for 1080p gaming

$600 for a 5070TI? That’s not terrible. But for someone who is gaming less and studying more, it’s enough to give me pause. I don’t know what else to get him though. What’s a good amount for a gift certificate to Sugar’s?

You can get intel B580 for less than 400 I'm pretty sure and that'll run everything at 1440p.

4k gaming isn't a thing and all these latest gen graphics cards are insane.

IMO there's real value in going for the Nvidia card for gaming, DLSS is best in class and having access to CUDA is very nice if you have any sort of engineering computation that you're doing.

The intel cards are a fantastic value, but they are trailing on driver support and dx11 performance. Vulkan has really closed that gap, but there's still some significant outliers

We had a knockoff in this vein in our elementary school computer lab in the mid to late 80s that we could play after finishing our typing drills and whatever other educational thing we had to do.  You could jump, climb ladders, and open up pits in the ground that the bad guys would fall into but the pits were only temporary and would somehow fill themselves back up after awhile.

I've tried to find it on the internet several times over probably the last 25 years but have never found the exact match.  Hell, maybe it was even just an earlier version of lode runner but I've never found a gif or just a screenshot that felt like an exact match.

Funny the turn this conversation has taken, I was going through old boxes last week and came across some of these:

Commodore VIC-20 computer

I have not found any Black Friday deals on them this year.
