Mentally unstable radical Republican? Oh you mean Marjorie!

The GOP sure does love going back to the well. You'd think their constituents would eventually catch on to the very obvious, very paint-by-numbers "The socialists are targeting and attacking me, and they have the audacity to hold me responsible for my words and actions! What about all the shit they do??" responses whenever they have a little heat on them...but nah.

Canada’s borders are the Atlantic, Pacific, United States, and North Pole.  They have among the tightest visitor visa regimes in the world. Yes, they have overstays and undocumented immigrants. They also have a fraction of the issues accompanyimg irregular entry that we do and it’s absolutely disingenuous to pretend say otherwise.

If I hypothetically sponsored a bill to replicate Canada’s legal immigration system (biased to bringing immigrants who will bring economic benefits, less benefits for family members, ineligible to sponsor if you received social assistance recently)— I 100 percent guarantee the most vigorous opponents would be on the left of our political spectrum.

I am not arguing that Canada’s system is bad, far from it. Just being honest about the fact that it does not dovetail with what American progressive activists want to see here.

The job market is different. Canada doesn't have 100s of thousands of employers who are not only willing to turn a blind eye to a lack of paperwork, but are actively looking for those with no paperwork.  Go try to work in a kitchen in Toronto.  Undocumented immigrants come here because there are jobs for them. There aren't jobs for them in Canada.  The solution to illegal immigration was always simple. Come down hard on employers and people will quit coming and/or staying. You don't need to put kids in cages or even enforce the labor side of the immigration equation at all.

That being said, we clearly have a need for people to fill those jobs and we don't have Americans that want to do them. Our work visa process should reflect what our actual workforce needs.  And it needs a lot of low end labor.

Yes.  And Canada was held up by some as having a "progressive" immigration policy long before Trump went apeshit with family separation, the wall. etc.

All of the commonwealth countries have pretty draconian visa requirements (especially post-9/11) and permanent-resident/path to citizenship regimes.  Most notably, they remove people without proper entry immediately.  No immigration hearings, no detention pending same, it's GTFO.

I used to frequently travel in and out of a large, overwhelmingly Muslim nation that produces lots of asylum seekers and regularly makes headlines for terror and extremism. The government of Australia, as of 2016, had purchased a large billboard at exit control warning all departing, in red capital letters, that “YOU WILL NOT MAKE AUSTRALIA HOME” (exact quote, I have a photo).

The small print in the ad was a list of all the unpleasantness you could expect if you tried to move to Australia without documents. I tried to imagine the shitstorm that would ensue if the U.S. government purchased similar ads.

Don’t get me twisted: Family separation, kids in cages, the Muslim ban, and a lot of recent tactics we have seen from ICE are wrong, cruel, and unworthy of the United States or any nation.  It’s inexcusable.

At the same time, the red-letter law of U.S. immigration, though far from perfect, is more compassionate and closer to the Progressive ideal than many nations that are held up as models for us in other spheres, and that includes mostly the commonwealth and Europe. This isn’t a bad thing, necessarily. But a concern about ensuring orderly, predictable, beneficial migration is not unique to the U.S. or our right wing.

Uh, how much of that was flukes? I think the entire Clinton era was a fluke brought to us all by H. Ross Perot. So take those eight years off the table to start. And then what do we do with the Dubya years, where Gore basically conceded to eight years of Bush Restoration?

If the Clinton years were a fluke brought to us by Ross Perot (and not the economy, stupid) then I submit that the Bush/Cheney years were a fluke brought to us by Ralph Nader. And Gore didn’t “basically concede.” The Supreme Court ruled in Dubya’s favor after the recount was halted in Florida where his brother was conveniently the Governor and whose Secretary of State was rewarded for halting the recount with a position in the Bush/Cheney administration. It’s not like Gore would’ve been President if only he had a more fervent desire to win the election.

Agreed.  I can't quite wrap my head around fully open borders.  EU/Schengen is not open borders because to fully avail yourself of Schengen, you have to be a legal resident or citizen of an EU country and that's no mean feat.

But I'm cool with liberalizing an orderly immigration process beyond what we've got.

I don't know the history of it, but it feels like a sort of a hodgepodge of various visas and programs rather than a comprehensive immigration scheme.

My faith in the sincerity of the Democratic Party has flickered on and off over the years but went out permanently in 2017-18. That was when I learned, conclusively, and in real time, that they were throwing a race to the Republicans rather than add another member to the Squad. They hate the left wing of their own party more than they do Republicans.

This was the 2018 New York's 27th Congressional District election. Dem Primary was won by Nate McMurray, who ran unopposed, I guess because the GOP incumbent, Chris Collins, was seen as unassailable. That is, until he got indicted for insider trading and other sleaze. Suddenly there was a race for the seat.

The GOP, being who they were, flipped off America and ran Collins anyway. The Dems suddenly had a photogenic white male (Mormon, even) candidate with Squad like views on their hands. I was told by a source very close to the campaign that he was summoned to Albany to meet with the party bosses up to and including Schumer himself. Message: Congratulations, kid. But we don't like you. You won't be getting a single iota of support from the party whatsoever. Now go get your shinebox and head back on up to Buffalo.

Or if you are of a Russian lit bent: "Why hast Thou come to hinder us," Schumer asked McMurray.

They held to their word. And, you know, some support from the party might have come in handy, because Collins won by 1100 votes out of 279,000 cast; 49.1-48.8.

So Collins heads back to Congress, gets convicted, and heads off to Club Fed. Repubs hold a special election and coughs up a MAGA CHUD, who this time defeats McMurray soundly.

Now it's quite possible this is something like a Doug Jones scenario, where McMurray would have won only due to extenuating circumstances and then been turfed out when a great candidate like Tommy fucking Tuberville came along, or who knows? Maybe he could have rallied his constituents around him given the chance.

But thanks to Schumer and the party hacks, we'll never know now.

Adding to this...Checked back with my source, and was given more details I'd forgotten:

Quote

Nathan’s story is sad and strange and speaks to the utter corruption that inflicts the entire political process.  I still can’t believe that two months before the election, Chuck Schumer came to the district and spoke at a ceremony honoring his Republican opponent. Schumer said “I can work with Chris Jacobs.” At that point, the polls showed Nathan leading the election. There’s other stuff. Governor Cuomo contacted him, and said “if you drop out, I’ll give you a judgeship. You’ll be set for life.” Because Nathan is a wild man, instead he posted a series of tweets criticizing Cuomo. Cuomo’s chief of staff called Nathan, and said, “You’re a dead man.”

NY Dems are a special and awful flavor of Dem.

But the parties are only as good as we make them, and are as evil as we let them.

They are tools to get what we want and nothing more, from the shittiest shitlib to AOC to Bernie; they are just tools and we should always be looking to upgrade our tools.

If the West Palm beach Democrats had not fucked up a simple fucking ballot design, you would not have had 8 Bush years.

Or Ralph Nader did not siphon votes in 2000.

See how that works?

The first step is to stop paying attention to Jimmy Dore.

Seriously. Dore is 6-12 months away from going full Tim Pool.

I truly don't understand progressives who are shocked that the establishment wing of the Democratic party doesn't want more progressives to win. Of course NY conservative Democrats don't want progressives running for office. The whole goal is to wrest control of the party from those shitheads so that one of America's two political parties can actually run on things that will help people. That doesn't happen in one or two elections. It's not fucking easy. But it is possible.

It's coming down to convincing moderate and conservative Democrats there isn't a future in some of their conservative signaling on certain issues. Most know they can do better for the American People and keep the gravy train running for their Patrons (and Matrons).

1992 exit polling showed Perot voters were evenly split on their second choice. Clinton was going to win regardless.

Bush 2000 and Trump 2016 were more “flukey” then Dem wins in 1992, 1996, 2008, 2012 and 2020

Anybody 'member that editorial writer in the Austin Chronicle who after 2000 constantly raged on the Nader voters?

I hope that guy made it.

Yeah Newt, if it's all about which member of the House got the most votes, remember that 8 of the 10 who got the most net votes in a House Race in 2020, were Democrats.  And the 2 Republicans in that Top 10 were from at-large districts...meaning they were the only fucking people on the ballot in Montana and South Dakota so garnering a lot of votes isn't as impressive as you think it is.

also, when Rep. Taylor Green wrote "Single-Handily"...anybody else think that's what she promised her constituents for a max donation?

"Look, I know you're a leader in the business community here, I'll give you a single-handy for a $10,000 donation to my PAC."

If you're a woman taking offense at that joke, don't.  She's not a woman.  She's a monster.

As a progressive I guess I was just shocked to know the lengths they would go to and how there is no bottom to their enmity. I do believe that a great many mainstream Dems who still have faith in the Mantra of Incrementalism would be shocked to learn that is is a long con par supreme. There is no Big Rock Candy Mountain at the end of this rainbow; just endless hogs slopping at endless troughs, while the Schumers and Bidens of the world assure as that one day there will be some Grand Reacharound the Aisle and bipartisan support for things the GOP is sworn and committed and ever willing to fight to the death over.

In other words, I believe centrist Dems and progressive Dems share the same views on the same issues; it's a matter of exposing the rotten core of the party to their eyes, exposing them to how they've been brainwashed into thinking their ideas and dreams are "off the table" or "unrealistic." As of now, both parties actively conspire to inertia, and it's taking us nowhere, very fast.
