Big XII is dead.  Keep saying it.

Look the good news is you guys get to be the poor man's Texas in the b12.  You just kilt off Gundy, who's next?

Will be interested to hear details on this.  It's clear this was his last year regardless.  But I think he earned the right to coach the rest of the season and announce a mutual separation on his own terms (with understanding coaching search is underway).  I mean that's basically what happened with Patterson right?  Or maybe I'm misremembering.  In any event, I wondered if they offered that up and he told them to pound sand and fire him (and they obliged).

Will be really interesting to see what he does from here. He’s never been anything but an Oklahoma country boy and has never shown interest in moving away. Heard he’s been a huge pain in the ass for years there but he got results. Getting to take the rest of the season off in probably what he needs.

Probably could’ve done this in 2018

I mean he was half a yard away from the 4 team playoffs in 2021 which is probably closer than any other coach is going to be able to get them in the expanded playoffs for the foreseeable future.  It worked pre NIL era.  Not so much now.

Sorta want to see him do game commentary or a cfb studio show and go completely off the rails on the current state of cfb.

He's also likely to inject his politics on any TV feature he does (lest we forget the t-shirt he wore) since he's no longer a public employee, so hard pass on that.

I think this job is going to be a good test case. In years past this would be a job a hot coordinator would jump at, proven ability to have success combined with relatively realistic expectations; you could turn it into a long gig or a stepping stone.

In the super conference NIL era? One wrong move can derail a career in big ways. I think we see more coordinators be careful about the HC jobs they take and testing NFL assistant waters.

I wouldn't touch this job with a 10 foot pole if I was Traylor or any other up and comer, not unless I was presented with a firm and competent NIL strategy from the OSU admin first, accompanied by a firm commitment to sticking to that for the forseeable future.

He’s on the back side of his 50s and has generational wealth, why would he need to do anything at all?

Didn't expect midseason but it was over either way. I assume Meachem will interim and I now have to hope we tank because we need youth and innovation in coaching like Gundy's early years. And to whoever said NIL strategy, yeah, duh, every program needs to figure out solid NIL plans to attract a new coach. Regardless of how it ended, Gundy transformed the program from nothingness to national relevance. One and a quarter bad seasons don't undo any of that, but it was time to move on in the new landscape.

Because ex-coaches get bored and they are really full of themselves.

Why did Tuberville run for Senate?

Why did Mack Brown take another job after 6 years of retirement?

Gundy will either enter the political sphere or be in a new job after a year or two off.

Yeah I was just saying that I hope they have some semblance of a plan in place before they start interviewing guys, and that they can convince potential coaches that they will have the full support of the administration because from the outside it looks like Gundy didn't have that the last couple seasons.

Can't wait to really hate his ass.

He'll be on TV somewhere. His press conferences are interesting and he knows a lot about the game obviously. Whether you like him or hate him he's still a known personality. No way he enters politics. He could say all the right things for this red state and he'd still be hated by more than half the state because he built his reputation at OSU and not OU. Hell, Cale Gundy has a better chance at being elected, he'd fit right in with today's climate.

I think we all saw the writing on the wall with Gundy but I was kinda surprised to see him fired mid-season based on his twenty years of “service.” They better get serious about where they want their program to be.

But I also get it’s a good time to go grab the next up and comer. I’d target GJ Kinne or someone like that, but that’s me.

Gotta move up the draft board?

Don't want Meacham to serve as interim, find a way to win a few games, and get handed the job. We need a complete reset.

If there were 3 coaches you’d like to interview for the HC role who would they be?

Your list is awesome.

He has been a HC for 21 years and I don’t even know what his politics are. I can’t think of any coach whose politics I know.

Pipe dream. OSU is going to hire Will Stein. Jalen Lott will decommit and promptly commit to Texas. DMoore will transfer to Texas.

The Will Stein part actually makes a lot of sense.

Gundy wore an OAN t-shirt once, so the fear is he's a card-carrying Republican at best, right-wing nut job at worst.

I think you've got it backwards, dude. Now that he doesn't have to recruit young black kids from a demographic that mostly hates his fucking politics, he can tee off and be himself.

Gundy calls the transfer portal "liberalism."

Well, then you haven't followed recruiting. Because his politics are out there. Also, don't look too closely into the politics of Bruce Pearl (your next senator of Alabama).
