Game Day Experience 2022

I usually only go to one game or so a year but I have never parked in a garage, always street parking.  Even if you park a mile from the stadium you're looking at a 20 minute walk.  Unless you're handicapped, I don't see the appeal of garage parking at all.  And if you end up further than you want to walk there are pedicabs that are still a much better deal than garage fees and still way faster.

The lax security at my gate this year has been shocking.

The lack of involvement from the band has been disappointing, as has the lack of organic “Texas! Fight!” chants.

There have also been inconsistent rules about being able to cross sections to access concessions and restrooms, which is insane.  For Bama there were 45 minute lines for beer in my section while no lines at the next section over.

I like the terraces/patios in the south end zone.

I got moved to 31 from 17 and it has been fine EXCEPT I went from 3 seats from the aisle to 40 seats from the aisle and that SUCKS.

Sure we can't beat Tech on the road. Sure we were 5-7 last year. Hey, we've lost 48 games in the past decade. But we have Nelly! That's what you care about, right?

I think its not a bad way to try and take the bad taste of the fans mouth from the Tech game before the WVU game to try and get the crowd in a good mood and rowdy before the game.

at least you get your steps in... I hate the look of stadiums surrounded by a concrete ocean of parking spaces.

APD and UTPD achieve intergalactic levels of egress entropy and have for years.  for domer we parked in the new at the time dell garage.  it took THREE FUCKING HOURS to get out of that garage.  at one point i walked out to the FIVE "officers" standing around DOING FUCKING NOTHING and berated them for their incompetence and they acted like they were going to draw down on me.

unless you have access to a private garage with security that intervenes with competing traffic at garage exit, i would never ever ever again pay $75 to park in the black hole of a state or school garage.

Not like we have an excess of cops in this town.

Take the money being spend on hiring and producing a Nelly concert before the game. Head to Spec's and instead spend that money on alco-booze. Pass out free shots for one hour prior to game time.

I guarantee you the crowd will be in a much better mood and rowdier than they will after a 3:30 p.m. Nelly concert.

Athletic departments have done what they can to combat it. If football isn’t enough — and the halftime marching bands have only so much pull these days — they’ve devised entire in-game entertainment scripts to keep fans engaged (and present).

A big college football game isn’t just a big college football game. It’s a big college football weekend.

sound familar?

Yep.

I get it, the game experience is evolving and not geared as much towards grumpy middle-aged men that dominate this site's demography.  Students are bringing it much more these days and that's a good thing.  But Belmont is already hearing it from big donors who are basically saying, "I am paying hundreds of thousands of dollars for my box and I need to talk to the person next to me between plays about deals worth millions of dollars...chill the fuck out."  Dirty little secret, the premium seating areas are empty on TV not just because of the weather/booze, but because those people need to converse with their guests.  I can't afford those seats but when I've been somebody's guest...I wanna be outside in the action but have  to hang back inside so I can be a good guest and hear what the fuck the host is saying to me.  Maybe just on third downs or something, because this non-stop decibel-leveling bullshit is too much for anybody over 35.  And that's still most of our attendees.

This is a pretty good description of how the loudness of the PA system is affecting the crowd, especially the olds. It’s so fucking difficult to say anything to the person next to you because of how loud the PA is blasting. I’m not not trying to have a full blown conversation, but it’s still a football game and I like to interact with the people around me. It feels like I have to cover my mouth and shout whenever I want to say anything.

If someone is literally shelling out hundreds of thousands of dollars for a suite they’re not having any problem hearing other people in the suite at all….

I get your double meaning.  But when those windows are open, it's still pretty fucking loud.  Really though, it's the field level club seats.  Those things are loud as fuck.  You can't hear yourself talk out there (again, I can't afford them but have sat out there as a guest).  Heat and booze inside are one factor, but lots of people just go inside to fucking hear their guests/hosts talk.  The NEZ Touchdown Club is about the only 'premium' experience where you can hear the person next to you without screaming.  All that to say, the BMD folks are complaining to CDC already.  It'll come to a head and I bet there's some audible relief by season's end.

Let's be honest, winning takes care of so much of this bullshit.  But for this kinda money, and these kinda results, yeah---you're gonna get some shit from seat license holders.

Reminds me of that comic who does the bit about the bible readings from Paul to the Corinthians or whatever.  Like how do you write a letter to a whole nation of people?  You can't just have "A Letter from Dwayne to the Puerto Ricans:  turn your goddamn music down!"  That's what I want to do, "A letter from Old Surly to the Belmontians...turn your goddamn music down!"  Anyway, see y'all tomorrow.  Tits up.

Hey, there are butts in seats and they are selling beer so it's working for them.  The club music is crowd Viagra.  Students shouldn't need it, but everyone's doing it.  They have taken a lot of stuff that used to be organic: cheerleading, the band, the Texas Fight cheer, etc, and turned it into a sequence of events.  There's only one Texas Fight chant per game because they do it when the Jumbotron tells them to do it and it would not occur to anyone to do it spontaniously.

I remember a mid-90's Texas/OU game when our offense was in neutral, but the defense was kicking butt.  The Texas side started doing "Defense" chants during the second half for every play, every series and the defense kept getting better and better.  It was awesome and a lot of fun.  That's not going to happen when you rely on a sound system.

I remember a game when the starting QB was struggling and the cheerleaders were leading a cheer that was "What do you want? TD. What's that? Touch down!". The students changed it to "Who do you want? JB. Who's that? James Brown!"  Hilarious and the students went nuts when Brown got into the game.  He deserved to start and he's still one of my favorite Longhorns.

Longhorn Band is still awesome, but they can't compete with artificial noise.  They are coming back from some down years, with COVID hitting at the same time that the "Eyes of Texas" controversy hit.  They are working hard to be more diverse.  The administration and alumni are supporting them and they are well funded.

Texas high school bands are the strongest in the nation and the band gets smart kids from those bands that can play their butt off.  Some of these kids come to Texas to become the next generation of music educators and some will become our next engineers, business leaders, doctors and lawyers.  It would be great if they were featured more in the stadium but they are still students having fun getting ready to be leaders, just like those before them.

Nope, gotta show the face painted hellraiser clowns the whole game! 🤡

Ol reliable was there. Got to see Nelly. Brought back some memories. Kiddo was like "never heard his music" I said just look at the scenery. Walked to gate but got stopped by the band (positive). Tickets scanned. Free water in the upper bowl. Food alright for price, ran out of BBQ nachos.

The Texas Fight chant in our area kept getting shut out by Bob-o late game calling announcement. Like if he was in a hurry to get back to chilling instead of doing his job.

Lived it. Loved it. Will do it again. Hookem

Week before OU and not once did the band pause during March Grandioso for the "beat the hell out of OU."  What the hell?

I was caught
In the middle of a railroad track (thunder!!!)
I looked 'round
And I knew there was no turning back (thunder!!!)
My mind raced
And I thought, what could I do? [pause] (Beat the Hell Out of OU! )
And I knew

Will that work?

I got to my seat last night about 5 minutes before kickoff.  My heart sank when I heard Bob Cole's voice again.  I thought he was replaced after hearing the very professional sounding substitute PA guy a couple weeks ago at the UTSA game.  Guess I need to keep answering the UT Athletics surveys and repeat the message that hearing Bob Cole's obnoxious schtick is a real beating.

Did the kiddo get you see you slide the credit card on a pom girl? Or shake your tail feathers. 🙂

Nothing wrong with a Nelly show. Especially before a game.

Only thing I hate is that they play Don't Stop Believing by Journey after the 3rd quarter instead of the band playing Wabash Cannonball.

Went to Bevo Blvd and Smokey's Midway for the first time. Total gimmick, but it's fine if you have kids. Kinda wish they had that stuff when I was a kid. Also, it's nice to see the team arrive and walk down Bevo Blvd.

Anyone have parking passes in the purple state garages? Took almost 2 hours to get out of garage b last night. No police directing traffic at kludgy 15 / San Jacinto intersection by exit. Should have stayed at tailgate, but for fucks state that was a joke.

Dude that shit was ridiculous. I parked in the garage next to Scholtz and traffic was a nightmare. Turned on the ac and slept in my car for 2 hours before I even attempted to leave. I also hate that Scholtz isn't open late on Saturdays anymore. Used to kill time there by knocking back a few brews while waiting for traffic to die down.

So first home game in likely 7-8 years. First game with my son (6 years old). Very different experience.

1. I think DKR will never be an intimidating place to play. Seemed that all the changes are to make the entire thing a family-friendly Disney event. Saw West Virginia getting off the bus and strolling in through the crowd like a Sunday stroll. Anything but hostile from my vantage point.

2. Kid loved the experience. He's not big into football or UT or anything, but knows of them through Dad watching. Figured by the first quarter he'd be asking to go home. He loved the pre-game carnival stuff. LOVED Bevo tearing through the WV logo on third down. Had him high-fiving other people after every score. It's awesome to see him so into it and have a blast. Helps that UT got off to a fast start.

3. Good god it's such a huge marketing and non-stop assault on the senses. Just advertising everywhere. Non-stop music, videos, noise, and stimulus. I don't mind the Bob Cole stuff everyone is talking about. I do mind sitting in Section 101 and feeling deaf by the end of the game.

4. Concessions seem reasonably priced for a sporting even, which is a huge plus and unexpected. Kid ate a ton and I didn't feel (too) ripped off.

5. Commercial breaks were ridiculous in number. I think eventually stadium crowds will need to revolt. Start a "No more commercials" chant. It was unreal. I blame Fox for that, not UT.

6. I see why UTSA's coach was mad about sound being piped in. The band is evidently relayed to a huge PA over by Smokey. I kept wondering why it sounded like the band was on the other side of the stadium from where I saw them sitting until I found the speakers sitting on the sideline.

i find the plentiful and lengthy commercial breaks more bearable when the weather is pleasant. So, i didnt notice them all that much last Sat.

The weather was perfect. No EMT emergencies in Section 108 for the first time this season.

The PA however. My god, I don't consider myself a wimp - i have experienced loud PAs during my lifetime, but I was literally pressing my fingers to my eardrums at one point in the third quarter. The onslaught is unfortunate. I literally don't converse with my son or wife during the game, it's near impossible.

I do not know why those assholes that run the adzillatron are still employed.

They have destroyed the game experience just as thoroughly as the ridiculous number of long tv timeouts.

Fuck Bob Cole for blaring his shitty bullshit and drowning out the Texas Fight chant.

I find the player intros on the big board quite entertaining.

Weather was outstanding.

More traditional Texas fanfare is appropriate and needed, but the piped in stuff does elevate the energy. Do the cheerleaders even do their flips to count down the scores? To few Texas Fights. At times, you don’t know there’s a band.

Lengthy and excessive commercials are the biggest detriment to the environment though.

So...as has been said many times upthread.....SOOOOOOOOO looking forward to being a part of a true old school College Football environment this weekend!  Even shitty-ass Boomer Sooner played after every 3 yard gain is better than Jump Around/Zombie Nation/Crazy Train or whatever (can't believe I just fucking said that)

This was also my first game in 8 years (I think).

The constant bass noise out of the PA system.  What.  The.  Fuck.

I was in section 28.  I forgot we had a band.

Too much music.  Use that PA and video board to get a good Texas Fight chant going.

Pregame some douche bro with a douche bag dad assaulted a OU kid on Bevo BLVD because the douche bro thought the OU kid was taking pics of his mom.   Most people just stood around and watched while three of us got involved to stop the stupid shit.  Dad thought his kids reaction was reasonable.  Great dad.

I went to the WV game and I'm glad we won, but the game "experience" is absolute trash. You can barely hear the band or you hear them twice because of the feedback/delay. I heard 2 Texas! Fight! chants and ZERO "Beat OU!". The amount of commercial stops was annoying but it's like they can't have any silence for fear that the crowd might actually enjoy the break in ad bombardment or shitty house music being blared over the speakers. I gladly pay the money to go to the Cotton Bowl each year, because it's like going to a real football game.

Hey, Bellmont: Feel free to have the outside of the stadium be a bastien for carnival rides, food and entertainment. But, for the love of God, please bring back Texas Football inside the stadium. We are there to watch the team play the GAME. Remember the reason people are there? A game is being played. Fuck your half baked cookies, your shitty choice in music, and fuck any piped in bullshit that drowns out the school band, you greedy, money-hungry bunch of dipshits. I can't wait to get to Dallas and experience the best game day experience in College Football.

Funny. I loved it. But then the late 80s/early 90s era where the stadium was half filled everybody sat down and chatted amongst themselves and yelled at you to sit down every time you tried to get into the game is where I got my start. Back in 2000 the crowd boo'd our own band. I don't know how Bellmont is doing this. I don't know how we are getting 100,000 screaming fans in to see this 5-7 program play a shitty team like WV but they are doing it. It's a damn miracle. Even in like 2005 once Texas was way ahead everybody would fucking leave and it would be me and a few thousand weirdos left in the stadium to sing the Eyes of Texas. So I don't know what this comparison is being made to, or what rose tinted memories you think happened in the past. Sure it wasn't the 2008 Missouri game or the 1990 Houston game but those were in the middle of amazing seasons not coming off a demoralizing loss to Tech and a 5-7 year. I don't know what you fuckers want. I am there for the football and the football watching experience was good. I don't know, maybe I couldn't hear the cheerleaders or the band as well as maybe I did in 1993. I don't know. Don't care.
The crowds in the old days were generally shit and I usually enjoyed UT football despite them. Everything seems much better now. I don't know why but I am grateful.
But the stadium was filled, it was loud, and the fans were into it and it achieved my objective. My kids were up on their feet screaming for the team despite not giving a fucking shit about football going in.

The biggest variable that has changed the experience is in-stadium alcohol sales. People are staying because they can have a drink until the 4th quarter. Couple that with a dedicated student section and you’ll get lively games. Though most students left in the 4th quarter this game.

Embedding spirit groups and allowing some organic elements to breathe is necessary to ensure a quality and unique experience that people cant get anywhere else.

College football, in general, needs to get games down to 3 hours if it wants to thrive in the future. The shortterm commercial tv money is too tough to pass up.

The loss to tech sucked but that stadium was still full and loaded, as you said for most of the game, However, the end of the 3rd quarter people were leaving and by the time the 4th was almost over, my section was a ghost town. Not all the improvements are lost on me, but maybe people are leaving early in a win because they are tired of all the ancillary bullshit being heaped upon them. You give me the Cotton Bowl environment in Austin and I'll buy a decades worth of season tickets today. Not everyone has to be entertained like a 5-14 year old. Austin is full of stuff like that and people are welcome to go enjoy those types of events instead of trying to make the football game about catering to the entire family. It doesn't need to be said because I'm preaching to the choir, but shit, Royal said it best about our uniforms, but it applies to the gameday experience as well. Don't candy this shit up, these are work clothes. I'm glad you had a nice experience and I'm glad that your family had a nice time. That still doesn't change the fact that people most likely leave early because the "experience" they are getting is tiresome and they'd rather do something else once the game is decided. I love The University of Texas, but knowing all the stuff I'm going to have to put up with inside the stadium makes my big TV and cool AC an attractive offer. Honestly, the guy below makes a great point...

#1 complaint heard numerous times on Saturday... "Another stoppage? Damn, this is going to take forever." From both Texas and WV fans.

How about we just play the games and let those greed mofos buy score ad space like soccer does and just play the damn game? Or run ads on the side while the game keeps rolling? Money hungry bitches.

College football games are too fucking long.  They're now scheduled to be 3.5 hours.  More regularly, they go four.

We're talking about a sport that has 60 minutes of game time.  And even when the game clock is running, stuff usually isn't happening.  One study from a few years ago showed that in the average game, there is only about 12 minutes of actual game action.  So you're spreading 12 minutes of actual Texas Football--which you say is what you're there for--across four hours.  No wonder you think the experience sucks.

You want to reminisce about when just the band played and just when we heard cheers.  But that was back when we weren't on television and the game lasted 2.5 hours.  I remember that.  It was fucking awesome.  But that's not happening anymore.

But that's not the Athletic Department's fault.  That's the fault of the Big 12 and the television broadcaster.

But regardless of fault, you've got roughly 3:48 to fill with non-football stuff.  And I'm sorry, but nobody wants to sit through a three-hour band concert.  Nobody is up for three hours of cheers.  So yeah--you're going to get a lot of content that is something other than football.

On balance, I think that content has improved over the last five years or so.  I'd much rather the game be played in 2.5 hours.  But since we're not getting that, I'm fine with what we have.

I like alcohol.  But yeah--the people have spoken, and the people who bitch on here unceasingly are certainly in the minority, it appears.

I want some time-out demolition derbies with 4 year olds in plastic Hummers. And girls with rubbery arms trying to hit a giant inflatable soda can with footballs. What's wrong with UT's entertainment team?

But seriously, Thank you baby Jesus that there is no "hype" crew. Cringy.
