I also enjoyed the ocean gate doc.
I knew most of the stuff in there. I didn’t know the details of the people leaving which was pretty interesting.

I can’t believe they never had a successful test of the last design but said fuck it let’s build it anyway. I’ve never heard of using carbon fiber in a pressure situation before or since. Metal bends before it breaks so you have a chance to do something before failure. Carbon fiber looks fine then fails.

I didn’t get his obsession with making it carbon fiber. Is there a weight problem in the water?

That was rhetorical. The guy was just a rich dipshit that wanted to say he did something different so he had meaning in his life.

He had his ego but he really thought he could make a new global tourist industry with cheap carbon fibre submersibles.  His obsession overlooked all the problems.  The doc with Josh gates relating his experience going down in it and his shear terror says it all.

The doc went into this a bit. One of the biggest expenses for a submersible is the support vessel.  A lighter submersible can get by with a smaller (read cheaper) support vessel and lighter duty support equipment (e.g. cranes).

Thank you to folks who mentioned Tires. It isn't something I would've watched otherwise (and probably wouldn't have even heard of or recognized).

I ended up watching both seasons over 24 hours- really enjoyed it.

Yeah, same. For whatever reason, I enjoyed Season 2 more than the first.

And just think about how much angst and bullshit that shit caused in the 80s.  Lumped in there with the fake rumors about needles in candy, and the true story about Adam Walsh, and combine it all with the beginnings of 24-hour Cable News TV and you had a mixture for making our parents paranoid.

Don't forget the Atlanta kids disappearing.  It's 10 pm - Do you know where your children are?

One year my Mom made us take our candy to a place that was running Halloween candy through an x-ray machine.

Yeah, that aspect of the story reminded me of Elizabeth Holmes/Theranos and the fucked up aspects of startup alpha founder culture.  Otherwise intelligent people drunk on a dangerous cocktail of hubris, denial and delusion.

finished up dept q last night. it was excellent throughout and did a great job launching into (hopefully) multiple seasons. it's based on a book series and has already been made into several (danish?) movies, so they should have plenty of material.

akram is the man.
