Damn, those Christian charities must be really essential to keeping society glued together. Kind of a weird position for this board to take given the historical levels of bullshit spewed here and the semi-regular calls to tax churches.

The Catholic church has an enormous budget, hundreds of billions. Over 60MM members. They should pass another tray next Sunday to fund the roles that are being laid off.

Holy fucking shit.  Poor people starving but at least Anastasis gets to score some political points.

Yeah it's gonna suck for the captains of both ships, no matter who was predominantly at fault. In the maritime world, a collision is generally going to be laid at the feet of both of them, because in open water the general thinking is that there were always things both of them could have done to avoid the collision.

I hope this is true as it seems like a really bad strategy to put them all in a room together and have them exert peer pressure on each other to not sign. The better strategy would be to work on them individually and see if you can get one to crack by offering them some sort of incentive, similar to how Bove got something out of Adams in the first place.

Sorry for pointing out the absurdity. I expect to never have to read anything again here about federal government subsidizing religious organizations and charities. If you are really worried about poor people starving, I will match your donation up to $1k to MLF today.

WHAT IN THE ACTUAL FUCK with the DOJ and this suing Starbucks for not having enough white men on the payroll…

Republicans are celebrating this shit. I’ve never in my life been more apathetic and pessimistic about the future my son will inherit in this country.
Decades happen in a week? We’re going backwards a century in three weeks basically.

Meh. Starbucks is burnt bean garbage.

I also like how he mentions the church's huge budgets and yet they don't use it to actually help people, need tax dollars for that, huh? The church's funds are probably not availble since they're having to pay off all those kids they diddled while continuing to claim that they are relevant to guiding peoples' moral compass.

You're kind of making his point, y'know.  There are a lot of church organizations that do a lot of good in the social services area, and yeah, they take federal and state funding made available to them like secular agencies.

Catholic Charities is the best of the RCC.  That doesn't insulate the RCC from criticism, nor should it expose Catholic Charites to more.  Afaik, in Dallas at least, they are the number one resource for charitable immigrant services.

That wasn't his point, but to your point, I know CC does good work for immigrants, but it shouldn't require a religious organization using federal funds, it should be nondenominational or government entities doing the work. The point stands that regardless of my disdain that it goes through CC, cutting the funding to cause harm to struggling communities is abhorent, and he's taking a fucking victory lap.

Why are churches tax exempt if the only money they're fucking distrubting is coming from the fucking federal government? yes, this is a generalization. But that's fucking double dipping. The whole point of them being tax exempt, in theory, is to fucking pass that extra money into service.

With some of the economic indicators of the last few days coming out and the continued actions of the administration, we could be heading for some good old stagflation.  We get stagflation plus the almost certainty of some shooting/conflict between law enforcement and a minority group and this summer is gonna be off the hook.  You look through periods of civil unrest in this country over the last 50-60 years, outside of a few always warm places like CA it almost all happens between April and October.

"Riot Season."

However, in this era, what that means is that we're going to get a cascade of fashion collections and such shit hawked on social media: "Top 10 things to wear this Riot Season, brought to you by your favorite influencer!"

Because....this fucking timeline.

How does a charity affiliated with the Catholic Church not have the budget resiliency to weather for at least a couple weeks a minor federal grant getting pulled? Thats crazy. I wasn’t joking about passing another tray. If they are running that fucking thin they have a real problem. That’s a pretty short leash to cut 120 jobs within a few weeks. I know that this board is uninterested in really thinking about these things critically. Just rhetoric after rhetoric.

Do you want to know what the boss move would be?

To prep and file a pleading to the court, notifying the court -- as is your duty -- that the court should be aware of an attempted fraud upon the court, and requesting that the court scrutinize any and all pleadings filed, especially any pleadings that purport to be "joint" or "agreed."

That way, you put this shit in the judge's hands.  A judge is under no obligation to grant a motion to dismiss if he has reason to believe the agreement to do so was obtained via fraud or other improper action.  And as an officer of the court, an attorney has a duty of candor to the court.

The etymology is a little muddled, but the name Henry is likely the best modern cognate for 'Amerigo' in English. But since the name has been feminized to America, Henrietta (or maybe Harriet) hits closer to the mark. So, really, we should pick one of those two and go with that instead.

Personally, I'm more fond of the latter and would go with the United States of Harriet and, therefore, it's also her gulf now and the whiteness of that name couldn't be more obvious.

Relief and humanitarian staff are not overhead. They come and go based on funding. Look at the a group like Havens for Hope. They have a baseline budget. Anything above that depends on external or additional funding. so when that goes away, so do the people and equipment specific for that.

So when you cut, say Pepfar, the impact is not at the USAID level, or federal accounting office. It is way down the line. And lots of these groups, including Christian organizations, outsource the actual work with beneficiaries. Did someone in DC lose their job? Maybe 1 or 2. Were entire medical teams in say Senegal cut? Yep.
