And people think a wall can stop them.

Yeah.  We should build bridges.

Also, the people who build these bridges need to read this book.

I’m pretty sure it wasn’t anything to do with misjudging the bridge height and everything to do with they had lost the ability to control the boat.

It looks like it was going backwards.

I was a sailor

I was borne upon the tide

And with the sea, I did abide

I sailed a schooner round the Horn to Mexico

I went aloft and furled the mainsail in a blow

And when the yards broke off they said that I got killed

But I am living still

Sing it, muthaaaafuckaaaa!!

Strangely, I have a desire for some enchiladas del mar and a rita.

Manning the yards (now rails)....

Early speculations are that the engines got stuck in reverse upon leaving it's berth. Older tug was obviously no help.

csb? My daughter and I were able to tour this ship (and a few others) at a Tall Ships Festival in Washington St. around 2004. Beautiful ship.

Apparently there were sailors standing across the length of each yardarm on the ship like ants on a jolly rancher.

I was wondering how anyone died from the original clips I saw, now it makes sense.

Not trying to be a dick to you specifically, but how have so many of you never seen tall ships?  It's kind of a big deal and they make a show of it.

These navy ships have ceremonial things they do when they enter and exit ports.  Something like this

KJKNRH26HBFNLI7UJXTYIMTHAU.png

People stand on the docks and wave and cheer for them as they go by.

And a traditional ship's version would be to have the sailors climb the rigging (vertically) and then spread out standing on top of the yards (a yard is the horizontal spar - the outboard tip is called a yardarm).  They are wearing their uniforms and posing as a salute to the place they are leaving.  It's called manning the yards or manning the rigging.

This Mexican Navy ship is in its highest parade mode, lit up with every decorative light they have, as a salute to South Street Seaport, New York, etc.  They are flying the giant flag and showing off.  These Mexican sailors just spent a few days in Nueva Jork.  This is the adventure of a lifetime for some of them.  Note that the sails are hanging loose below the yards.  They are not far from springing into action, setting all of their sails in unison, and pulling off a pretty cool show.

Also, I don't think it's an accident that they are in NYC.  It's "Fleet week" up there this week and I suspect this is some foreign relations deal where a lot of foreign countries send their people up there to keep up relations.  Love it or not, imagine you're from some small coastal town in Mexico, and your navy gig has you sailing around NYC.  These boys were beaming with pride and doing their best.  This event is probably pretty embarrassing for the nation.

It looks like they are backing out of South Street assisted by a tug.  That means they are using their engines to reverse but the tug is helping push them around.  This boat has engines but the windage with all the masts, sails, yards, etc. doesn't work great - they get blown around easily and are exceptionally difficult to maneuver, especially at low speed.  The east river isn't a "river" in the sense that it always flows one direction.  It is tidal and changes direction and velocity with the tides.  It appears to my untrained eye as if they were reversing out and some mechanical failure caused them to either lose power or be stuck in reverse and they just kept reversing into the bridge.  If you watch this video, it looks like they hit the dock pretty hard too.

I have seen a lot of commentary online to the effect of "why didn't they know the bridge was too low?"  They did.  The fucking chart and chartplotter they have on board will both display the bridge clearance which is 38.7 meters.  That bridge is made of bricks and steel and has been there a while.

A couple of additional thoughts.  These guys can't get out of the rigging until ordered to do so.  It's the Navy (Mexican) and they do what they're told.

By the time they realize they're going to have a problem, they have few options.  Grab a backstay and slide down?  Jump and hope you don't hit anything solid?

If you've never been in a harbor when one of these things goes by, I recommend it.  It's pretty cool.

Someone should have ordered them to come down, right? I don't blame the sailors for following orders, but I blame the people responsible for their safety for neglecting that responsibility.

I was in the Navy and today is the first time I've ever heard of Tall Ship and/or a tall ship festival. It does look pretty badass though.

The only clips I've seen are really short. It could be that they start right around the time it starts to drift backward and it hits pretty quick. I also suspect those guys are tethered up there for safety and get there single file meaning there is time involved in getting up there and getting down. I think it's likely that this happened without enough warning and not enough time for them to get down before impact.

I was living in Manhattan during Liberty Weekend celebrating the 100th anniversary and restoration of the Statue of Liberty.  As part of the celebration they had a parade of ships down the Hudson River.  The parade included ships from around the world, including aircraft carriers, battleships, and the largest flotilla of tall ships ever assembled in modern times.  The Elissa from Galveston and this Mexican ship were both there.  It was the coolest thing that I have ever witnessed.

If the ship lost power, why didn't they just drop their anchor baby?

The East River is broadly going to be a no-anchor zone.  There are so many cables and pipes running between Manhattan and Brooklyn that dropping an anchor could do a lot of damage.

From my understanding the Mexican, Colombian, and Peruvian ships are all sister ships built in the same yard in Spain.  And that they are themselves basically templates of the USCG Eagle which was seized from Nazi Germany at the end of the war and turned into the Coast Guard’s tall training ship.

Per online sleuthing she was at Pier 17.  There is not much distance between the pier and the bridge and from the video it looks like her screws won’t come out of reverse and she is moving backwards fast.  Very likely would have been far more dangerous to try and scramble everyone down by the time it became clear it was going to happen.

These ships are diplomatic and educational symbols and when they are in a port, they offer free tours and stuff for the public.  Super shitty and sad all around.
