I have no hard evidence to back this up other than my own eyeballs, but it feels like elite front 7’s are always going to have the advantage more often than not in college football even when going against quality offensive lines. We saw what our own DL did against Georgia and Ohio State. Their offenses just made the extra play or two to come out on top and at that point you tend to forget some of the bad stuff.

I’m beginning to see some bellyaching about Flood on the 9.95 sites and how his unit “underperformed expectations” last year. I certainly expected us to rush for more than 1 yard a carry or whatever it was against Georgia and Ohio State and there are always places for improvement, but it also ran over some good fronts throughout the season and provided quality pass protections despite Ewers having zero pocket presence.

You aren’t just going to have your OL manhandle everyone in a 16 game season in the college game.

OSU didn’t rush particularly well against us.  They had a 22 yarder and an 18 yarder (pretty sure we screwed up our alignment here).  We had the dumb playcall resulting in a loss of 7 otherwise Wisner/Blue were at 4 YPC.

You are correct in that you won’t dominate every game.  Certainly not equal in the running and passing game.  Every once in awhile, you’ll run into a TVondre Sweat type.

About this ol talk. I would love Texas to be 3 deep at tackle but that just wouldn’t be normal these days. What team in ncaa has 3 deep talented tackles waiting their turn??

Has it ever been normal?  Maybe with unlimited scholarships.  I’d wager no team exists with game ready 3rd team OTs.

It’s pretty simple.  Your 3rd team tackles are almost never on the field barring injury.  If they aren’t still in the developmental phase, they’re likely never going to see substantial time.  Often, the lesser of your 2nd team tackles will not see the field because the best will likely rotate between RT and LT.  If it goes to shit and both 1st teamers go down, many teams will move a G to T before running out a 3rd teamer.  I’d say it is rare to have more than 8 guys that are trusted.

Sark has been quite good at managing the depth, but it is not reality to expect 3 deep at all positions because of the cost, player mobility between programs and playing time.  And OL has the least amount of player rotation maybe of any position but QB.

On The Ticket they were talking about a statistic where 1-2 pre-season Top 10 teams end the season outside the Top 25 almost every year. I don't think Clemson will be that much of a bust because they have a cupcake schedule. But they won’t compete for the title. Littleton made a wise choice.

Their first team is loaded, and at the beginning of the season the might have the best first team in the country. I think their depth is an issue though, and could show up in the playoffs if they make it deep

They’ve ignored the portal, but they still have a bunch of studs starting for them

This is very true, and has been for a long time. Because I posted this about 20 years ago in a well researched blog post that got read by about 30 people.

Haven't kept up with it but there used to also regularly be 1-2 preseason unranked teams who finish top 10. Arizona State last year would be one.

I was responding to sl express post about his criticism of sark for recruiting offensive lineman(tackles). I don’t think there is a team in America that has a bunch of tackles waiting around on the bench. So are tackle position could be a lot better but most teams are in the same position.

IT stuff from this morning. Some of this is repetitive or what we've already heard.

Here’s a comprehensive breakdown that puts all the pieces we’ve heard together.

Game Situations

Saturday’s scrimmage featured a mix of move-the-field drills (between the 20’s), red zone lockout periods, and two-minute drill to close the day. As expected, the defense emerged as the clear winner in each period.

During move-the-field situations, the first-team offense faced the second-team defense, while red zone and two-minute drill matched the first-team units head-to-head. In all three cases, the defense maintained the upper hand, largely due to the defensive line.

It wasn’t pure domination, but it was clear.

Quarterback

Quarterbacks were able to find open receivers at times, but inconsistency hurt the offense. Overthrows and an occasional tendency to feel pressure too early and leave the pocket stalled drives. QB’s leaving the pocket early is another positive sign of the defensive line creating consistent pressure.

Arch Manning did make a number of the throws he needed to hit downfield and avoided turnovers, finishing without an interception.

Matt Caldwell looked like a veteran on one sustained drive.

The QB’s were largely up and down.

Running Back

The running backs avoided negative plays, staying ahead of the sticks, but couldn’t break off any long runs. CJ Baxter stood out, showing patience, vision, and the ability to fall forward for extra yards. His timing on stretch plays was particularly effective.

Correction: He was in his knee brace. Our source must have seen him right after his day was done without the knee brace.

It was an okay day for the backs relative to the competition they were facing.

Wide Receiver

Ryan Wingo and Parker Livingstone looked really good, but the best performance relative to expectations probably goes to freshmen Daylan McCutcheon. McCutcheon had a touchdown on an out route thrown by freshman quarterback KJ Lacey.

IT has Livingstone penciled in as a starter. Dark pencil. Almost ripping through the paper. He’s had a good camp.

Emmett Mosley did not participate in the scrimmage.

Tight End

Transfer Jack Endries stood out in scramble drills, working well with his quarterback to find openings. Spencer Shannon has shown noticeable year-over-year improvement and is on track to start in 12 personnel. He caught a pass on an out route and looks like a reliable target in two-minute situations.

Shannon is a starter in 12 personnel. He’s had the offseason he needed after having a good offseason last year.

Freshman Emaree Winston suffered a shoulder injury; the extent is still unknown.

Offensive Line

The offensive line had mixed results, performing well in move-the-field but struggling against the defensive front in the red zone. They ran stretch plays from a variety of looks, with Baxter showing good patience on those runs.

While they are working in more gap schemes than in previous years, they liked OZ on Saturday.

Nick Brooks is expected to miss some time but how much is still yet unknown.

Defensive Line

The defensive line was the most dominant group of the day. Hero Kanu looked strong, and Travis Shaw was immovable in the middle. He also brought the energy. Cole Brevard had a productive day, and though both Shaw and Brevard got banged up, they returned to action.

Colin Simmons was a constant presence in the backfield and would have recorded multiple sacks if the plays had been whistled dead.

Lance Jackson took first-team snaps in certain packages, while Ethan Burke rotated in at defensive end. Trey Moore lined up at Sam linebacker in base formations.

Pete Kwiatkowski ran base a lot. It is the first scrimmage, after all.

“The D-line made things easier for the rest of the defense.”

Linebackers

It was a relatively quiet day for the linebackers, though freshman Ty’Anthony Smith had an interception off a tipped pass. Smith worked a lot with the first-team defense alongside Anthony Hill. Liona Lefau might have a competition on his hands.

Elijah Barnes had a strong open-field tackle on a red zone screen pass.

Moore’s time was largely spent at Sam in base sets.

Secondary

The tip on Smith’s interception came from cornerback Warren Roberson, who “has been balling” according to sources. Derek Williams had a strong red zone tackle on Christian Clark.

Manny Muhammad continued his standout fall with multiple pass breakups. Jelani McDonald received the bulk of the reps at Star, while Graceson Littleton saw limited action. As you know, Michael Taaffe got some looks at Star.

Special Teams

Kicker Mason Shipley missed one attempt but connected on a 35-yard field goal during the two-minute drill. Punter Jack Bouwmeester had another strong showing, though punting was not incorporated into the scrimmage.

Schedule This Week

The Longhorns’ schedule for the coming week:

Tuesday – Full pads at 6:30 a.m.

A few more scrimmage notes

Some more scrimmage notes that have trickled in since last night.

* Offense was bland for vast majority of scrimmage. A little jet sweep looks, but not as much pre-snap motion Saturday as Sark has in game plans and in-game

* Offensive line has somethings they need to clean up. Still need to be more physical in the run game consistently  at G-C-G. The source believes defense will likely carry Texas at Ohio State, then the OL and offense will have three games to gel plus the off week headed into the Florida game.

* Defensive speed off snap really sped up Arch first couple of series. Arch slowed down as the scrimmage progressed.

* Not much under center unless in goal line. Had been working on it more in practice setting vs Saturday scrimmage.

* Daniel Cruz had a good day. Quick and strong. A factor in run game from center position. Took second and third reps it appeared.

* KJ Lacey really impressed. Quick release, escapability and makes good reads. The escapability is something that really impressed, and the why is below.

* It’s just feels like everyone on the defensive front can rush the passer at edge and linebacker. It comes in waves. Colin Simmons and Brad Spence top that list.

* Cole Brevard “is massive”. Just a big guy.

* Not mentioned as much, but both Ethan Burke and Colton Vasek showed well.

* Defensive speed off snap throughout the roster is best one source has seen in Sark's time in Austin. "They are coming, and it happens fast"

Combining the recent practice notes paints a pretty negative picture of the O-line.

* Still struggling with penalties, even with Cam Williams gone

* Still can't run inside and has to lean on OZ as a crutch

* Still getting stonewalled in red zone situations

All the same weaknesses from last year, with much less experience and depth at the tackle positions. This is not where the OL should be heading into year 5.

It's not about depth per se. Recruiting numbers at OL is because it's the hardest position to evaluate. A big part of the reason coaches don't recruit numbers high enough is because they don't want the dead weight on the roster. And who can blame them? But without the numbers you end up missing enough that inadequate players end up getting significant playing time.

And the development time is so enormous. The best OL programs typically have guys who have been in the system. Like our group this year.

But as has been pointed out by CTJ, the portal is more of a crapshoot for OL. Either you're possibly missing like OSU might have done with Ethan Onianwa (they have another transfer in Phillip Daniels from Minnesota who could be displacing him) or you're paying out the wazzoo for someone like Isiaih World from Nevada.

The point is I do not believe we're recruiting enough offensive linemen, because some of them are going to miss regardless of how highly regarded they are. One or two more per year is 3 to 5 more during a development cycle. That's big. Also, I know churn is not the most pleasant topic, but with the presence of the portal counseling players out is a more seamless process for the guys who don't work out.

I agree with the concept that only about 8 OL are going to be in the rotation in a given year, with injuries being a huge X factor.

Another thing regarding OL at Texas is that Baker ended up costing Texas, and its NIL supporters, far more than originally projected. Everyone knew that was dead money for at least one year. Sounds like he’s doing well, so maybe that’s it. But that experience immediately created pressure around the OL and dead money, from the money. So things got tight in the last cycle and this cycle. The revshare stuff may have loosened some of that pressure, especially now that there’s better clarity on acceptable NIL.

Well, at least we will have a mobile QB to help alleviate some of the early OL issues.  But the penalty shit is going to stall drives again.

I mean say what you want about Arch’s inexperience, but the kid has started a SEC conference game before.

They have. It's Sayin. But it's the typical head coach game being played. Keep the backup engaged. Push the starter to work harder. Show the team he earned it.

Sarkisian did the same sort of thing with Ewers and Hudson Card.

One dude’s comment was “OSU doesn’t rebuild they reload” making seemingly a blanket assumption that Texas has to rebuild.

Never addressed their QBs having zero starts and Texas D being stacked front to back.

You can acknowledge that a position group has work to do without going full satya.

I get it but every other area of Texas' team has improved damn near exponentially since Sark's arrival.   But i think the oline has not followed suit.  It was easily the weak link in the position groips the last two years.  I was expecting Saban/Bama type of dominance. Flood needs to do better.

We had some pretty high draft picks with Tim Nunez’ line in early Mack years. And those lines sucked.

I’ve also been a bit disappointed with the line play.  It hasn’t been bad.  But it needs to be better.
