This game will come down to if we can keep them from grinding the clock.  They like to go on time churning, 10-15 play drives that take up half a quarter.  With our inefficient offense we can't let that happen.  I would prefer we be ultra aggressive on D and if we give up a long score, so be it.

With Caldwell, our offense could suddenly become efficient. We shall see.

Weeks actually played that game, with Perkins primarily spying. Idk where to even begin with this team, especially given the Sark rumors. Somehow, we keep winning. Hopefully, with us playing at home for the first time in a month, that streak will continue.

Whit was definitely out that game.  I'm sure they spied some and I wasn't on the game start to finish but I was surprised how often they played man with nobody on the QB and gave Pavia a ton of space to escape pocket.   Pavia was their leading rusher that game but only managed 20 yards against Mizzou.

What glimmer of hope we had with Arch and hurry up spread em out offense is gone bc we have to use a new QB.  This will likely lead to Sark staying stubborn with his overall double TE bunched up slow ass predictable offense.

I hope Caldwell doesn't get killed

Is Caldwell mobile at all? He'll still have to deal with the shitty OL and may have to take off more than a few times like Arch.

He's got enough wiggle and speed to escape the pocket, its just a matter of how good is his feel for the pocket breaking down in relation to trying to hold onto the ball long enough for his routes to develop. Sure would help if his routes took shorter rather than longer.

Agreed with these points. Akina / PK called uncharacteristically soft coverages last week. I don't know if we saw something in MSU's offense that we didn't like or what, but it was strange.

Watching the first half, it seemed like PK bet Shapen couldn't consistently make good decisions and accurate throws on the intermediate stuff. And then he did. At least until the 4th quarter. Also, Akina can't coach zone to save his life.

This is some silly shit to worry about. If this was a concern it would have revealed itself on Saturday. This is a flawed team but they play hard for 4 quarters and play for each other.

Yes. He's got wheels. I guess we'll see what his pocket-presence is like, though.

Our defense matches up really well with Vandy.

Pavia is looking to nickel and dime with short throws and option running, and generate just enough YAC to turn 3yd plays into 5yd plays.  Were not exactly elite in coverage but our entire secondary are big strong athletes that can play the run. Both corners can sit in shallow cover two and play the wide option (really helps the LBs and Edges). Mcdonald is particularly good at this type of game running the alley from depth and erasing runs (this was his breakout game last year). We negate enough of that YAC and Vandy goes from a 27pt offense to a 13pt offense quickly. Taaffe is the true difference maker bc hes so cerebral, so if hes out that is a factor, but D Williams is good against this style too.

Taaffe out last week had a pretty obvious impact imo. Not sure he's the best player on our D but along with MM I think he's the most important. Ant is a monster but feels like you could kind of cobble together some of his production if he was out. Taaffe isn't a lockdown-cover safety but he is vocal and and on-the-field leader and is really good against the run game. We just don't have anyone to replace what he brings. All that said - hopefully with the film from last week and a week of prep we get some better safety play this weekend and guys get a bit more comfortable.

From the initial timeline I'm assuming he misses another game?

Vandy receivers have sneaky speed, but they aren’t all out speed merchants like MSU and Florida have. A&M has similar speed at WR.

Hopefully we see tighter coverage this week.

I think @Js1 is probably right and PK was having flashbacks to OU in 2023 - Shapen isn't quite the level of dink-and-dunk artists that Gabriel was, but he works well in the Briles system. Guess it's that Baylor DNA. Outside of their TE, I don't think Vandy has the speed or the athletes to really worry us. I'm more concerned about us getting gutted on slants over the middle. That was a constant problem in 2023 and this secondary, without Taaffe, seems almost as vulnerable as that unit. I'm especially disappointed in Guilbeau. I didn't even expect much from the dude, but he seems dumber than a bag of rocks.

I 100% agree that we need a "whole team" game this week. It seems like some weeks the offense plays well enough to win (Florida, MSU) and other weeks it's the defense leading the way (OSU, UK), but we've only seen one game against real competition where both sides of the ball carried their weight - OU. And even against OU, the offense needed an entire half before it found its footing. If the whole team comes to play, I think Texas can beat Vandy comfortably. We have better athletes and comparable coaching. Pavia is veteran, clever, and dangerous with his legs, but that can be accounted for. There's enough tape on him and this team plays well against mobile QBs. If Sark calls a friendly scheme and Caldwell can hit the easy passes, that should be enough to make up for the lack of a run game. Side note, but I'm following the staff's lead and abandoning my hopes for a run game. The RB room is too banged up and too young, and our OL is dogshit anyway. I'm hoping we can scrape together enough offense on the ground to keep Vandy's defense honest, but we will live and die by the QB's arm.

Man, you have completely lost the plot the last two weeks. Did you start rooting for Texas in 2022 or something? Why are you not desensitized to baffling adversity for this program? How are you still this soft? Seriously, you are reaching @6th Street's level of pants pissing and shitposting. Say what you will about @satyanash's negativity, at least he generally includes some analysis or information about why he is dooming. You just seem to feel compelled to type dumb shit in every thread.

We get it. You don't think the team is very good. Try posting something else, or maybe just stay away from the football board for the rest of the season.

Sorry bro? It’s not that deep. This is a message board on the internet.

And no, I was born into this (orange house)- I would have chose another team if I was a bandwagon fan.

Lebby's offenses have given PK some fits (OU 2023, 2025 MSST)

It's not just Lebby, it's anyone running the Briles offense. PK's worst game ever might have been the 21 Arkansas game against Kendall Briles. I was expecting our defense to struggle a good bit against MSU, because PK just has not figured out any answer to that offense. Thankfully our offense and ST bailed him out last week.

The key to making up for out terrible OL is reading the D pre-snap and getting the ball out quick, which is something Caldwell should be drastically better at than Arch. We give up way too much pressure inside and too many free blitzers for scrambling to be the answer.

The defense plays fucking great every week

They made critical stops and stopped them with 2 mins to go when all they needed was a FG to win it

imagine a truly “complementary” offense that actually GETS A FUCKING LEAD on teams how much better the D would be

Yes he has wheels but won’t need them if the ball is getting out on time.

Caldwell is smart enough and trusted I guess to audible out of the Sark play into the touchdown play.

I’m confident with Caldwell.  Senior, mature guy and good size at 6’ 4”.  Appears to have some zip on the ball and may surprise some people.   We don’t need the OL to be the hogs,  but Arch proved what he could do with a bit of time and being able to slide laterally, really opens up (albeit half the field) the lanes.

Going to be interesting.  Caldwell starts, may we see a QB run or two from Lacy out of wildcat or a trick play with him going in motion only to throw it ?

This game has a totally different setup and feel. Still not sure how I think it fully plays out but I'm optimistic. The worst thing that can happen for Vandy is for us to actually give them respect. They need us to mistake them for the traditional Vanderbilt squad and they're too good for that.

Sark simplifies the offense and play calling for Caldwell. Offense gains 500 yards. QB controversy ensues. The team, especially the D is happy to be finally playing at home and plays lights out.

42-17, good guys. Late TD by Vandy in 4th when scrubs are in.

They gave us a tough game after getting two super fortunate picks off Quinn and getting a lucky TD late that should have been picked off. The final score wasn’t super indicative of how comfortable that game was by the end

I now go into games and ask will Sark do what he wants or do what is needed. If he insists on running WR that break around 12 on the 3rd 8, this game is going to be tight. If shortens things up and is more concerned about efficiency, Texas will score on Vandy. Last year Sark got them early, Vandy adjusted, and the offense struggled down the stretch. According to FEI this is the worst P4 defense Texas has faced. They are #60 (MSU was #38)

Vandy is on a mission per Pavia to play in January. I don’t envy PK’s job this week to prepare for a QB like him. If Sark trots 12 personnel to start the offense I will be hanging out at the lake this weekend. Picking off low hanging…fruit.

Very much so. Go watch his run against Florida. He's (yeah, I know, but this time it's real) sneaky fast.

Defense dominated that game. Vandy had TDs on short drives (38 and 31 yards). Last one was vs prevent and finished with 44 seconds left and no with no Timeouts. Vandy turned it over 3 times. Clark Lea did make some nice adjustments at halftime.

The score was 42-21 Texas this morning playing Caldwell this morning on NCAA. Computer gave them a fumble scoop and score and fucked me on putting Muhammed as my active player and was torched. I say we smoke these guys 49-10.  Our defense will score more than their team.

Agreed.  We had a pick 6 called back on their last drive for a head shot to Pavia.  That sticks and the score is closer to a blowout then us recovering onside kick.  I was there and really never felt like we weren't going to win despite being down 0-7 to start.

They tried the deception play that OU got by with...refs called it only b/c the WR was facing the their sideline and not downfield.  IIRC it was on 4th down....wiped out a big gain at the time the game was very much in the balance.

You mean something like going out and playing your way to a 17 point defecit against Mississippi State after the news breaks the morning of the game?

I'm not really worried, it is what it is. I expect playing at home against a top ten opponent is a motivator regardless of the coaching situation. But emotions can change over the course of a given game, over the course of a week, etc. Saying the team's psyche is a wild card - an unknowable factor that could be material to the outcome - isn't worrying; it's just pointing out a fact.
