So when he does it anyway does everyone just throw their hands in the air and say “well he’s the boss so let’s head out to Illinois!”

love it that someone with a barstool logo next to their name is posting this. most of these types of posts are only seen by like-minded people who already agree with you. this tweet is aimed directly at barstool’s audience, an audience that is basically never subjected to these types of tweets on their timeline. as small as that seems, it’s not nothing. keep chipping away.

Jim Beam closes its distillery for 2026. In Trump's America, even Bourbon is heading for the rocks

In lore, America is motherhood and apple pie. Close behind is Bourbon — a whiskey that must be made in the US (among other things) to be so called. Its formulation dates back two centuries to the distilled corn mash spirit made in Bourbon County, KY. The whiskey is entwined with moonshining. Which, in turn, underpinned NASCAR's rise. It is as American as the flag.

Yet in MAGA America, its sales are declining so badly that Jim Beam will shut down bourbon production at its Clermont, KY., distillery through 2026. That’s not great. However, this production shutdown is a useful symbol of America’s economic doldrums under Trump.

MAGA apologists may try to blame the Jim Beam production cut on a general stagnation in distilled spirits sales. In 2024, after decades of significant growth, hard liquor sales volume declined. However, the dollar value of sales increased. In addition, market predictions indicate that liquor sales will grow slowly in the near term.

So why is Jim Beam shuttering its main distillery for at least a year?

So what’s the truth? The answer is bifurcated. Demand for Bourbon, specifically, has decreased. And Trump’s tariff policies have exacerbated the decline. We could call Jim Beam a victim of the Law of Unintended Consequences. The more direct would say the company FAFOed. The Herald put it thus:

The move comes as Kentucky’s $9 billion bourbon industry grapples with a glut of whiskey and a slump in demand at home. In response, the industry has pulled back production by more than 55 million proof-gallons (an industry unit of measurement) or more than 28% through August, the lowest level since 2018.

At the same time, exports have been curtailed to major trading partners; Canada has been boycotting American spirits since March in retaliation for President Trump’s ongoing trade war and U.S. whiskey sales to that country are down by more than 60% through October.

Other Kentucky companies including Jack Daniel’s Tennessee Whiskey maker Brown-Forman also have announced layoffs or shorter pauses in production earlier in the year.

Trump promised that his tariffs would increase American manufacturing. Jim Beam is proof that that promise had the honesty of a typical Trump promise.

Considering how bourbon distillers/retailers etc have been fucking buyers for years on pricing/allocation etc I have little empathy for them. Also this is tied to reduced drinking in the younger generations as much as anything. Happy to blame Trump for lots of shit, I think this is a sign of over capacity being reduced in face of a market decline in spirits.

I get they've been overcharging and young people are drinking less. He killed the export market overnight.

This. Bourbon + Tennessee whiskey exported almost $1.5B worth of product in '23. Any guess what their numbers will be this year and going forward? With younger people drinking fewer spirits, it doesn't make much sense to kill your export business while simultaneously opening markets for other countries.

The Supreme Court allowing unlimited donations has been one of the worst foundational problems of our politics. Wealthy people always have more access to politicians. No one is naive not to understand that but we've gone out of our way for them to buy favors.

This explains the "ENEMY OF THE PEOPLE" tweet. These oligarchs were reached for comment, got spooked, and went crying to daddy

You are correct that bourbon was already fucked (Private Equity being the main culprit, IMO), but the tariffs absolutely hurt as well. It's ok to assign blame on multiple things and not downplay any of Trump's idiotic policies.

tbf...it takes a strong person who is all-in on something to wrestle their amygdala into submission. she appears to be a lot smarter and better at critical thinking than our own surly maga morons anyway.

MTG seems to have done it as well but that's bc she was a true believer from day one, and that bitch still owes David Hogg a public apology.

I think they also feel very betrayed by Trump and MAGA.

I’m waiting for him to try and spoil Santa Claus for everybody.

I mean… he did just that when hosting a bunch of kids around this time of year during his first term.

Sometimes I wish I could find an interest in European history outside of my dad’s home country, but I always conclude it’s not worth the effort so I stick with learning about Pacific Peoples instead. Far more interesting to me at least and these people got along with each other better most of the time and thrived in some of the most remote places on the planet until white people showed up.

The winners literally ate the losers.

They can’t sell anything in the second biggest market because of tariffs. This is entirely trumps fault

Not to mending the fact that they'll gladly line up and vote for the next version of MAGA-lite the GOP slaps a coat of makeup on and calls "centrist".

Until they're willing to admit that Trump was just the most outwardly corrupt part of the problem, I ain't listening.
