It would appear the shooter was able to simply buy personal information on his victims from public and legal markets, whoopsie poopsie!

https://www.wired.com/story/minnesota-lawmaker-shootings-people-search-data-brokers/

It's an issue I've talked about repeatedly here on surly, and the usual suspects typically just come back with "bhhhhuuuuut it's OBAMACARE for the internet!!!" but goddamnit data privacy matters!

It's absurd and literally leading to deaths now, the degree to which our personal information is financialized by private interests at the expense of our peace of mind, or even peace of body.

I know some aspects of this concept are abhorrent to most Americans, including myself, but I don't see a way out of fixing "the internet" and social media, without directly dying everything we do on the internet to a valid SSN/DL. Want to be an evil motherfucking commenting in the comment sections of youtube and reddit? Ok. No anonymity. Buying public data on people? Flag that shit and send a notice to the people who's info got sold, since obviously personal privacy doesn't exist anymore. Uncomfortable with your sexuality because you're a repressed homosexual or like being pegged? Fuck it, your porn history is out there for everyone to see. You'll either let your freak flag fly, or you're going to have to repress that shit more and jerk off without the internet like we all grew up doing.

Bring back personal accountability and shame. Anonymity clearly doesn't work.

It's less about "fixing the internet" and more about enforcing baseline data collection and retention rules, like the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) in Europe. It's a law with real teeth that lets governments and citizens go after data brokers and assert sovreignty over their own identity and data online.

It's less about anonymity and more about not allowing any private entity to acquire and exploit the data of hundreds of millions of people for whatever means they want. And yes yes yes, it's never going to completely be gotten rid of - onion routing and the dark web give bad actors a ton of tools to avoid enforcement. But if it's explicity illegal and treated as the bad behavior that it is, it will significantly reduce its negative impact.

That's far afield from THIS specific issue, but goddamn, the dude would not have been able to target and conduct his terroristic assasination plot - but for the easily accessed personal data marketplaces online.

Right, we're talking around each other. I agree with all of your post regarding data protection and how it's done in Europe. I was more referring to the general concept of civility and lack of accountability the internet fosters, particularly here.

Dude, be yourself. Don't repress it, embrace it.

Unless you're a pedophile. Then repress that shit.

I do find it fascinating that many of the same folks that are clamoring for EU-style regulation of food dyes and ingredients, the "MAHA!" types.....are opposed to a similar GDPR regimen here.  Both would be really good ideas that would substantially improve the quality of life in America.

@Laxtonto just posted in another thread. He still will not come back here and admit his mistake.

He doesn't respond to any criticism. I literally clocked his ass in less than a minute for posting a "news" story in a screenshot without a link because he was trying to hide the source and he instantly moved on.

There it is again.  Until we collectively stop giving evangelicals a pass as being "regular christians", this shit will keep getting worse.  There is nothing regular about that cult, and they need to be treated like the fucked up mouth-breathing dumbasses they are.   These aren't your grandma's born-again christians.  These people are evil and convinced they're righteous.  That's a bad combination, and for some reason Americans can only recognize it for what it is when it comes wrapped in the flag of islam rather than christianity.

It’s not surprising.  Evangelical Christianity is man made.

I may be a few centuries too early but involuntary sterilization becomes more reasonable with each passing day. Teach your kids or they'll be the end of the line.

Sorry losers but this guy wasn't motivated by a cause or politics but rather mental illness.

Dude was a nut - another Hinckley or Jared Loughler (sp?).

the guy who assassinated a democrat had mental health issues.   Shocking

His manifesto sounds about as logical as half the shit the president tweets or you’d hear on AM radio.

Yeah, the insanely pro life guy and who was a member a radical evangelical church and who has a hit list of democrats, abortion providers, and abortion advocates was totally not motivated by any right politics. Nope, just random mental illness and nothing else to see.

Huh. Then maybe a certain segment of our leadership should stop tossing lit matches of hate onto these explosive nutbars. That would be helpful. Stop feeding stochastic terrorism, and create fewer stochastic terrorists. Naah, that’s too easy.

Let be fair, not to discount the leadership but our corporate oligarchs creating rabbit hole content feeds to whatever agenda the crazy person finds themselves diving down also plays a massive part in the equation. Then there is personal autonomy. That's often offset by a lack of any efforts to help folks with mental illness even when the signs are clear, if there is money to even pay for it.
