Shipley’s straight out of the fryer (ask them and they will make it for you) is an entirely different experience. Far superior

Will try it, but they are completely different kinds of doughnuts IMHO. Shipleys are more about the outside being a nice golden with substantial, but soft dough. Krispy Kreme are all about being airy with not much to them except the outside frosting.

Shipleys has gone significantly downhill since pre-covid and I attribute a lot of that to growth and PE ownership already.

Some of you are either haters or have never had a truly fresh fresh picked up off the conveyor krispy kreme. There's nothing like it.

Their glazed donuts are the best glazed donuts, but their kolaches (suck it Czechs) leave a lot to be desired. I don't eat donuts much these days, so i prefer an Earl Campbell or Renfro's kolache from the local Cambodian run place.

Those things fucking suck nowadays. They sausage used to take up all the space inside the bread. Nowadays those things are over half empty air space... The.links are smaller than the Ekrich garbage.

As noted above, the family sold out a few years ago and the PE guys changed the recipes soon afterwards…

I agree about 25 years ago. They've sucked bad the last several times I've had them though. To be fair they were not fresh which absolutely makes a difference.

I can slam those hot Kristy Kreme glazed but they get pretty mediocre after even a bit of cooling.

The reality is that a cake donut is superior with coffee as a breakfast and Shipley is better at that.

Sneaky good: HEB sour cream donut.

Yeah I don’t eat a lot of donuts but I’ll tear up some HEB sour cream donut holes, warmed up with melted butter drizzled on them.

A friend of mine (sort of, more of a friend of a friend) came to Austin several years ago for work and was staying at the JW Marriott on 2nd & Congress downtown. He lives in a rural town with few restaurant options so naturally he wanted to go somewhere for lunch. Dude was literally around the corner from Cooper's BBQ and his restaurant of choice that he wanted me to take him to was....Shake Shack.

I legit haven't said a word to him since and that was like 7-8 years ago.

Ha!  Joke's on you!  That friend now posts here under the username "Rex Kramer."

Sure but as a non-native/resident are you gonna choose a chain over a local spot that's at least supposed to be good? That seems crazy to me.

Were you going to drive him to llano?

Going to Coopers downtown is like recommending Saxon Pub at the airport.  At least take him to Burger Bar instead of Shake Shack.  Cripes

After Covid and the first PE sell out (and inflation which has occurred across the donut market), prices crept up (>$1.25 per donut) and quality went down (smaller meat/more bread in ‘kolaches’, less filling and icing on donuts, jelly donuts seem smaller). They used to send out email coupons and birthday rewards, then they introduced an app where the rewards get sent. “Oh nice, maybe it adds convenience like other restaurants’ apps!?” Nope, their app blows. It’s like finding your specific Shipleys location is dealing with a subcontractor and they charge you a fee to use the app. “Free glazed donut for your birthday” (less a $2.50 convenience fee). And they still haven’t figured out how to make decent regular coffee. I’m certain this new PE owner will accelerate the enshitening.

That being said, Shipleys glazed are still the gold standard. How the fuck do Southern Maid franchises stay in business? Their donuts are more stale and worse tasting than trucked in Dunkin Donuts, and their kolaches are $5 each.

People in small towns have heard about certain chains that only exist in major cities.  like shake shack. I can understand them wanting to check it out. It’s not like he said that he wanted to see if McDonalds is the same in Austin as in his town.

and it’s only lunch during a work trip. Who cares if it’s a bbq place, shake shack, or some deli.

i might shake my head if small town person said they wanted a chain burger but I wouldn’t write them off due to it.

edit. And for shipleys, I have a location near me that I wish would move. They have a line on the streets that blocks traffic. I refuse to go there because of it.

Apple fritter says take your cake donut with you to the bathroom when you squat when you pee.

Shipleys opened in Amarillo last monday. I walked in and thought it was donuts for ants.  Gotdam everything was small.  Donuts  looked like the holes were the size of pencils at putt-putt. Silver dollar apple fritters to boot.

I like their abomination hot dog & jalapeno  kolaches, for what they are. I very likely will not return though.

A Shipley opened down the street from me recently so they sent us some coupons for free donuts and kolaches. It’s alright. Nothing special but fine for a hangover cure.

Some of my favorite mornings as a kid were early weekend mornings rolling the Chronicle and throwing my neighborhood paper route. Once I finished, I’d head to Shipley’s to meet up with my buddies who had just wrapped up their routes. We’d eat too many fresh donuts, talk and feel important, and then I’d go home and sleep until early afternoon.

KC Donuts on Brodie Ln in Austin was my atf. They're like the best bbq places - they close early and when they're gone, they're gone.
